All hardware experienced a sales increase in Japan for the week ending the 4th of May thanks to Japan’s Golden Week. Most notable was the PSP which sold over 100 000 units to yet again claim the title of best-selling console in Japan. According to Media Create figures the PSP sold roughly 8 500 more units than last week, racking up a total of 100 870 units and placing it well ahead of the Wii which scored second place with 71 518 units (up from last week’s 48 796 units). The Nintendo DS sold 52 542 units, an increase of about 10 000, while the PS3 experienced a slight bump up from 9 107 to 10 177 units. Sony’s PSP has claimed the top spot on the Japanese hardware chart for another week. The latest Media Create figures show that the PSP sold 92 411 units for the week ending the 27th of April, up from last week’s 85 421 units and pushing the PSP closer to 1.5 million units sold in 2008. The PSP sold almost twice as much as the Wii which sold 48 796 units to secure second place, up from last week’s 44 241 units. The Nintendo DS sold 42 435 units, marginally lower than last week’s 44 551 units. The gap between the PSP’s and DS’s year-to-date sales is widening with the DS at 1.2 million units. The momentum of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, now in its second week, has pushed the PSP to the top of the Japanese hardware chart for a second week. The latest Media Create figures show that the PSP sold 120 964 units this week, only marginally lower than last week’s 129 986 units.The Nintendo DS takes second place on the chart with 55 190 units, roughly 3 700 units lower than last week’s 58 916 units. The Nintendo DS’s somewhat dismal performance when compared to sales of the PSP means that the PSP overtakes the DS’s year-to-date sales. The year-to-date sales of the PSP now stand at 1.23 million while the DS trails with 1.11 million.The Wii sold 44 618 units this week, also marginally lower than last week’s 48 785 units.
