The Honolulu that greeted Captain Hackfeld and his wife was not much more than an overgrown village with narrow, unlighted streets and unpaved alleys. Shops were dark and forbidding and the streets were deep with dust. All water was pumped by hand, or by windmills from wells sunk in the coral rock. Here and there among the prevailing grass huts and adobe houses was a wooden house of two stories, which belonged to some prosperous family. The harbor of Honolulu was small and comparatively shallow. The wharves were crude -- hardly more than landing places. A slaughter house and meat market projected out over the water; opposite them was a long row of shanties that filled the air with strong odors of fish and vegetables. Despite the unkempt appearance of the town and the harbor, trade was boom

Earth may have a twin orbiting one of our nearest stellar neighbors, a new study suggests.By Andrea ThompsonMarch 11, FoxNewsUniversity of California, Santa Cruz graduate student Javiera Guedes used computer simulations of planet formation to show that terrestrial planets are likely to have formed around one of the stars in the Alpha Centauri star system, our closest stellar neighbors.Guedes' model showed planets forming around the star Alpha Centauri B (its sister star, Proxima Centauri, is actually our nearest neighbor) in what is called the "habitable zone," or the region around a star where liquid water can exist on a planet's surface. The model also showed that if such planets do in fact exist, we should be able to see them with a dedicated telescope."If they exist, we can observe them
One of the main attractions of a vacation visit to Sydney, Australia, is the stunning views of Sydney Harbor. Why not enjoy this magnificent scene from the deck of a speeding jet boat or a more leisurely cruising sailboat? There are quite a few companies offering boat rides on Sydney Harbor so you have a variety to choose from. Sail boats are a nice way to go because they cruise along at a slower pace and allow you to really drink in the surrounding beauty of the harbor. You can chat with you friends, family and shipmates while sipping a cold drink and letting the ocean breeze blow through you hair. Another way to go is getting on one of the fast jet boats that zip around the harbor and under the Harbor Bridge. Some of these boats have as much as 700 horsepower and the way they race and bo

The Harbor is an amazing church in Ventura, California. It was started several years ago by my friend Milt Davis and recently, Sam Gallucci became their pastor. It's not a big church--but they are having a big impact on people that many churches don't want to embrace.Currently, they're ministering to several women who have young children and are living on the streets. They are intentional in their efforts to go after "Samaritan woman at the well" types. Many of these women have experienced multiple divorces, have young kids, emotional struggles. There are now seven women like that who are coming and they "have stories that blow me away," Sam says. Yet, at The Harbor, they are beginning to experience God's grace.Sam's vision is to keep loving on them, providing food and medical supplies to

Like everybody else who visited the Pearl Harbor memorial on Oahu, she believes anyone traveling to Hawaii should not miss this historic memorial. There is no denying that this will be a very emotional and moving visit. Today, by the way, is a very important day in U.S. history, and an important day, I think, in the world, particularly for the allies.Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. Many are well aware of the importance of this event. This awakened a struggling America to the brutal reality of Hitler and the Imperial Japanese (I say Imperial here because I will not in any way exclaim that the Japanese as a people are at all represented by the actions of WW2). Many lives were lost in this strategic, yet cowardly act and I feel there is cause to remember them, even if you are not an American. In remembrance: Pearl Harbor, the dawn of the last World War...(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

This is pretty much a re-run of the post I made the last two years, but my feelings and intent remain the same:I want to make sure I pay my respects to the over 2,400 members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and citizens of Hawaii, that lost their lives on this day 65 years ago, in one of the most violent attacks on U.S. soil. As President Roosevelt said at that time:Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.Listen to the whole address: Roosevelt Speech Dec. 8 1941

I've been very anxious to see how this debacle turns out. For those of you that haven't heard about it, there's been some issues with the Harbor Towers on the Waterfront. First off, a little history. The Harbor Towers apartment complex was completed in 1971 by the Berenson Corporation, as an affordable housing option near Boston's financial district. Designed by I.M. Pei, in conjunction with a local Boston architect, who also collaborated with Pei on the design of Boston's City Hall, the towers are well known in the architectural community. At 40 stories, they are the city's tallest residential towers (here). The most recent news is that the Harbor Towers needs renovations and they're passing the cost on to the condo owners - $75 million dollars worth. According to a recent article in the Globe, the cost per condo owner is "$70,000 to $400,000 or more each - equaling about 20 percent of the units' market value."A group of condo owners had banned together to file a suit aga
You know that seven-story parking garage near the New England Aquarium? It was on the market a few months ago and now it's been sold. Developer Donald Chiofaro has agreed to buy it and he's going to tear it down.In its place, he is most likely going to build "a large complex of offices, residences, and a hotel." My first reaction was "Just what we need, less parking." But according to the Globe article Interpark (the company that currently manages the garage) will continue to do so and then will manage the new garage once it's built. Underground parking maybe? That would be a plus.In case you're curious, the price tag was $155 million dollars. Read the article yourself (here). Unless you live in Las Vegas, all night diners are tough to come by. Sometimes it's nice to get out, or stay out, and then go have a burger, or dessert, or whatever, but if it's after 9:00 p.m. in the 'burbs, that is NOT going to happen. Harbor House in Dana Point is the coolest place to hang out, especially late at night. The beachy, low-pro casual atmosphere is so totally comfy and pressure-free. The food is great, and portions are HUGE, but they're happy to give you a container to take the leftovers home for a rerun snack the next day.The inside of Harbor House is really cool - old time leatherette booths, and movie star pics all over the walls and ceiling. And the graffiti is to die for! (Okay, that was weird and just jumped out). But mostly, it's just a cool, fun place to hang out near the beach...especially in the middle of the night when the rest of the world is sleeping.Keep up with me...

Harbor seals in San Francisco Bay are so contaminated with chemicals such as flame retardants and the pesticide DDT that scientists are studying whether the pollutants hurt the pups' chances of survival, data that can add to knowledge about the contaminants' effects on humans.
About 500 harbor seals that rest on the bay's beaches eat the same kinds of fish caught by local anglers, and the seals live in waters shared by swimmers, surfers and kayakers. What happens to these marine mammals could offer clues as to how pollution from sewage and dirty rain runoff can affect other mammals, including sea lions, otters and even people, scientists say.Sources:San Francisco Chronicle October 19, 2007

The earliest recorded visit of an American to this part of the coast occurred in 1792, when Captain Robert Gray sailed his ship, the Columbia, over the bar and into the harbor which today bears his name. No attempt was made to establish a permanent settlement, however, until 1859. In that year James Karr and his family arrived and settled on the banks of one of the rivers flowing into the harbor. Shortly thereafter he was joined by four brothers named Campbell. To the little settlement thus formed, and to the river on whose banks it stood, the name Hoquiam (Ind. hungry for wood), was given. Within the decade a number of other pioneers arrived, drawn by the promise of wealth in the virgin forests which stretched in an almost unbroken expanse from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascades. By 1869 a post office had become necessary, and in 1873 a school was opened. In the meantime, some four miles to the east, a young Irishman, Samuel Benn, had staked a claim in 1867, at the juncture of the Cheh

Dana Point Harbor is a really nice place to spend a Sunday. There are great places to eat and shop, or just sit around and people-watch. The cool thing about Dana Point Harbor is that there are so many different little "harbor worlds" there. Shopping and restaurants at the main center of the harbor (fine dining to casual snacks. Our fav is Jon's Fish Market - great fish & chips). Then there's Doheny Beach. This is one of the very few beaches open for camping. There are firepits there (awesome!) and they hold the Doheny Blues Festival there in the May.Oh, you know what's fun? (This is mean) Go to the boat launching area and watch people "attempting" to launch their boats and jet skis. It can be hysterical at times (submerged cars, etc.) Trying to get them back out of the water is even better.Okay, back on track...Going to the opposite end of the harbor you can visit the Ocean Institute and see the tall ships. Oh, speaking of the tall ships, you really should try to make it to the Tall

I saw these tiny stretched canvases in an art supply store today. They were just too cute to resist! I painted this sailboat and sunset tonight from a photo I took when I was up in Bar Harbor, Maine. The painting will be sent with the mini easel. The nickel is there for size reference so you can see how tiny it is! This would make a perfect gift for your favorite sailor, or anybody who loves Bar Harbor and Maine as much as I do!
Here’s another image of it from the sides, so you can see the depth of the stretchers. I painted the sides with black acrylic. It looks really sharp!

The year-round average temperature is 80 or above; nights average 69 degrees in winter."
