Last week's news about Ted Haggard is quite shocking  (especially for those of us who just recently saw him in Jesus Camp), I can only imagine how it must be for the people who attend his church in Colorado Springs. I don't have much to say about it, other than to point you to two very good posts about the issue. One was written by John Spalding of SoMA Review entitled "Haggard and Truth" and the other is a post over at Think Progress entitled "Ted Haggard on homosexuality." In case you haven’t seen the headlines, a guy named Ted Haggard is being strung up by the media.  Turns out that this guy, who heads one of the largest Christian organizations around, may have been struggling with homosexuality and drug usage. The details of his trysts are fairly sordid (possibly paying a male prostitute and using meth to heighten the experience).  But, it is the details of his ministry, not his failings, that raise my eyebrows. Ted has been one of the leading campaigners against gay marriage and homosexual relationships in recent years.  He has used his pulpit at his church to re-iterate something that 99.9% of homosexuals and Christians alike ALREADY KNOW… the Bible labels homosexuality a sin. As a Christian and a pastor, I truly don’t fault Ted for his struggles with the flesh.  I’m not attracted to men, although, if asked, I’d have to admit Johnny Depp is fairly hot.  I am however, a big fan of women and smut.  I fight act

In college I read a book that changed my life, Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald. This book revolutionized the way I studied, slept, and spent my waking hours. In the book he speaks about sinkholes, where something is built up on a foundation that is empty; It translated into a great spiritual principle. However, years after the book was published, Gordon MacDonald would fall into sexual sin, and commit adultery on his wife. He later wrote a book, called Rebuilding Your Broken World. As you may have seen from my previous posts, my small exposure to Ted Haggard on TV has not impressed me. However I have been impressed by his conduct over the immorality allegations. So many high profile preachers go into highly televised convulsions of emotion about how they were tempted and failed in their battle with evil. They make themselves out to be victims in some kind of cosmic struggle. By contrast Ted Haggard seems to be saying in his letter to his ex-congregation that he has failed in a battle with himself. Essentially he is taking responsibility for his own actions, both good and bad. So credit where it is due, Ted Haggard has made a good example of accepting his own human frailty and his own choice of actions.(c) Hal Westhead 2005

I wasn't planning on commenting on the whole Haggard fiasco (engouh people are doing that for me), but I found an interesting article at the huffington post. And Art has some sage words on the subject. I wasn't as gleeful as Art was, but I do admit I did have a sense of, "See I told you we shouldn't turn pastors into idols" smugness. Maybe it's time we stop following these guys around like they are Bob Dylan and see them as men of God with a gift who can still fall.

In a further attempt to cover up all the details of Haggard's homosexual activities, Haggard has signed an agreement with the New Life Church stating he can no longer live in Colorado Springs. From 9News in Denver:9Wants to Know has learned the New Life Church in Colorado Springs has reached an agreement on the conditions of Pastor Ted Haggard's relationship with the church.The agreement calls for Haggard, the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals and senior pastor at the New Life Church, to not rejoin the ministry at New Life, for him and his family to relocate from Colorado Springs and requires Haggard to refrain from speaking publicly about the scandal.The agreement also includes a financial settlement, but as part of the deal, the church and Haggard cannot disclose how much was included.Despite the fact that such an agreement would fail miserably in court since the Constitution says that Haggard can live wherever he damn well pleases and say whatever he wants,
