STEVE HOWE & MARTIN TAYLOR - Masterpiece Guitars (2002)
World Music-United Kingdom "The so-called Great Guitars was a touring trio of jazz masters: Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, and Barney Kessel. Ellis jokingly called their title “modest,” but it was accurate, and it remained so when Martin Taylor, a naturalised Scotsman a generation younger, filled in after Kessel was incapacitated. Taylor's here, but the title's especially precise because it refers to

      High-Tech Guitars
Leave it to Beverly Graham. She's so into nature, organics, and new-age spiritualism, it makes perfect sense that she'd have the least natural, most mechanical, highest-tech guitars we've ever seen. First up is her matte black Ovation. She likes the matte black finish because it doesn't reflect the stage lighting into the audience. This way, she avoids lighting up random people in the audience with a bright flash, only seeing their grimacing faces! Next up is her graphite Rain Song 12-string. This one has an amazing sound -- no doubt because it's perfectly engineered. The inlay is beautiful -- I particularly like the sharks! Beautiful, wonderful, and perfectly matched instruments for a pure professional. Thanks for sharing these great instruments, Beverly. High-tec

      More Guitars
Jewbilee & Midnight Hour played last night, and there were some neat guitars in the group. First up is Shirel's '61 Gibson, clearly a working guitar. Check out the mic placement. It's either a luthiers dream, or nightmare, depending on one's outlook. Still, the guitar sounds great, and the real attraction is Shirel's powerful voice. Next we have two guitars from the guitarist for both bands. This one is a nice Sparrow guitar, with hand-painted pinstripes. What a beauty! It's a Regal Custom Grand, a true antique, nearly 100 years old. It's quite lovely, with very rare styling and features, including a real tortise-shell pick guard, oval sound hole, lovely detailed edge binding, and unique fretboard. Next up is Michaels Taylor guitar. I love the sides of this instrument, and in the future I'm going to take more photos of all the instruments, including the back and sides. A Slew of Neat Guitars
The Bards of the Koad brought a selection of neat instruments. First up is a unique one, Michael Brown's Cittern. His cittern is a celtic version of an Irish double mandolin, based upon the Greek Bouzouki, but made in Mexico. It's a small, oval-body ten-string instrument, with a strong unique sound and flexible tuning. Michael uses the cittern for a few songs in the Bards of the Koad video we captured. Daniel Randall's Olympia, by Tacoma, Acoustic Bass guitar. Similar in configuration to Will Jobsen's Tacoma guitar, Daniels bass does a fine job accompanying the Bards. Karen Hay's beautiful old Ovation guitar, a family heirloom, named 'Rudy'. It's one of Ovations's first efforts, and truly special to her. The sound is incredible -- as one would expect from an Ovation.

Harmonix Does The Right Thing With Faulty Rock Band Guitars
In a strange move in the corporate world, but the right move for your consumers, Harmonix is acknowledging a flaw in the first wave of guitar controllers packaged with Rock Band and are offering replacements. Evidently the strum bar (the “string” area) of some of the controllers was breaking rendering the guitar controller useless. Harmonix has issued a statement saying that those who have a broken controller can contact them through their website (http://support.ea.com/rockband) for an immediate replacement. It took weeks for Microsoft to address the X-Box 360 red ring of death issue.  It sad that that is almost the norm now for most companies.  Kudos to Harmonix for stepping up to the plate and dealing with the issue immediately. Guitars - Yamaha
By Michael Russell In the world of guitars, Yamaha isn't exactly the first company that you think of. Known more for keyboards, digital pianos and synthesizers, Yamaha still makes some decent guitars which are more than reasonably priced. We're going to go over some of the guitars that this 40 year old company makes.Yamaha started in 1966 long before the first synthesizer came out. But by the mid 80s they were making some of the best synthesizers on the market, including the classic Dx-7. But in spite of their reputation as a keyboard giant, the land of guitars was not very far away.Yamaha guitars are not the fanciest looking models around but they do have a decent sound. The AES series includes the AES 420 through 920 series numbers, with the exception of the 820 which doesn't exist. No explanation is given for the missing number. The Pacifica series, which has a somewhat sleeker look than the AES series, includes the PAC 012 through 812, again missing a couple of series numbers inc

      Guitars - Ovation
By Michael Russell The year was 1966. Guitars had already been around for some time. People expected them to be more or less of a certain type and design. There weren't any real radical innovations in the manufacture of the guitar. And then came along a company by the name of Ovation. They weren't going to just make another guitar. They were going to come out with something completely different. So in 1966, when they broke out into the scene, they came out with their very unique round back guitar, thanks to a guy by the name of Charlie Kaman. The pro musicians of the time absolutely loved the guitar. The guitar purists were not quite as enthused. They just didn't get it.The odd part of how this guitar actually came to be had nothing to do with guitar manufacture at all. Kaman's knowledge of helicopters and more specifically, helicopter blades, game him a really good understanding of vibration and applied this principal to the making of his new guitar model.Kaman said that he didn'

      Guitars - Rickenbacker
By Michael Russell Alongside guitar names like Gibson and Fender, you can't mention the best of the best without adding the name of Rickenbacker. This company has been around since 1931, but it wasn't until 1956, on its 25th anniversary, when Rickenbacker began to make a name for itself in the world of guitars. That year, Rickenbacker introduced the Combo 400. Guitar collectors call it the guitar with the butterfly style body. But Rickenbacker didn't stop there. That same year they added a solid body electric bass guitar. The one thing about these guitars that made them different from any other guitar was that they had necks that extended from the head to the bass of the body. Today they call this neck through body construction. Rickenbacker was the first company to make guitars like this and soon came to be a trademark of the company.During the 1950s, Rickenbacker had many popular models. Probably the most popular were the hollow body six string Capri models. This guitar was first u

Buying Guitars Online vs Buying Guitars From a Store
By Bill McRea Buying guitars online is a lot different than walking into a brick-and-mortar shop to pick a guitar. What are those differences and what advantages or disadvantages are inherent in buying guitars online?First, let me start with the disadvantages...A guitar you see online may be a lot smaller or bigger than what you think. This is particularly true if the picture does not give you anything with which to get the relative size of the guitar in question. However, this should not really be a problem for those who take the time to read through the description and specification of an advertised guitar. The second disadvantage is a rather tricky one. There is no way you can be sure of the feel of a guitar without playing it. There is also no way you can really determine how your guitar will sound without actually touching it. Yes, I know most online shops even add audio demos of their guitars. However, this still remains tricky because a guitar sound is seriously affected by the cl

      Guitars Shopping Parts Choices
Author: Jim Brown The guitars shopping part choices for strings, would expand into a wide range of choices that would include classical strings, acoustic strings, bass strings, and a basic list of guitar strings that stretched a country mile. Depending on the wear and tear that your particular playing style places on the strings, you could choose to stock up on a 5-pack of classical or bass nylon strings, or choose to buy them in bulk in sets of 12.If you were looking to replace your guitar bridges when you were considering guitars shopping part choices, then you could select bridge models like Floyd Rose Tremelo, Hardtail, Tune-O-matic or Telecaster. These replacement bridges would look quite elegant in gold, but the black coloring also looked very promising. For a bass bridge replacement, you could choose between a Mono Bridge, a combo styled with a Bridge and Tailpiece styling, or even leave your options open to selecting a 4 String Bridge, 5 String Bridge, or 6 String Bridge if you

      Ronald Ho Guitars
The story goes that Ronald Ho was a University professor who took a long sabbatical many years ago. He moved to Port Townsend, WA, and became a luthier. He made some amazing guitars. I first found out about Ronald Ho guitars from one of our musicians, Erik Christensen. Erik has a fabulous Ronald Ho guitar, you can see it in his pictures and videos here. Erik asked me to research Ronald Ho guitars for him. I found just a few things. These pictures are of a Ronald Ho 12-string guitar for sale at Eric Schoenberg's guitars. Here's what he has to say: 1983 Ronald Ho HSJ-12 Cutaway, big, beautiful maple 12-string made by a highly respected luthier from Port Townsend, WA. Ron hasn't been building for many years; I met him in the mid-Eighties at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, at which time he was producing very high quality guitars. Hot jazz fingerstylist, Jamie Findlay, has owned several of Ron's guitars, this 12-string having been one. The body is a 17" Jumbo shape wi

Vic (What Is It With Dykes And Guitars) = Brilliance
Alternate title for this post =  The Monday Melee Say It With Lyrics Day, August 6, 2007. So last Monday, I find out that Vic over at What is it with Dykes and Guitars, has thrown some creativity into the Monday Melee. I was pretty damn impressed. I said so.  I was jealous. I flogged myself for not thinking of it myself. (Well not really, but now I’ll get hits from people who search “flogged myself” just like I continue to get hits from people who want to see soiled knickers, just because I wrote about Whitney Houston’s soiled knickers  being up on the auction block.) However.. this post is about Vic. For those of you too lazy to click and go see for yourself, last week’s Melee over at Vic’s blog was done in photos. It was genious. So then Vic asked if I was agreeable to a further display of creative genious and I of course, said that I was. I’ve seen people answer the Melee in a variety of ways and I think it’s great. I started it to

      M. Ward - Duet For Guitars #2
If you have hung around here much in the past 3 years plus of our existence, you already know I am a big M. Ward fan, so any newsworthy items surround Matt usually wind up getting a mention here. And a pretty special, though under the radar piece of news now as Ward’s excellent album, Duet For Guitars #2 is getting a re-release tomorrow from Merge Records. You may remember we alerted you to this news back here, and you can grab the previously out of print album at your local indie record shop tomorrow. If you don’t have a trustworthy shop nearby though, we recommend you head on over to Merge Records to purchase. The album was originally released by Co-Dependent Records in 1999, then re-released in 2000 by Matt’s friend Howe Gelb on his Ow-Om label. Some standouts for me from the album include Beautiful Car, Scene from #12, Fishing Boat Song and It Won’t Happen Twice. M. Acoustic Guitars - Is Bigger Better?
By Lee Griffith Back in the late 70’s, when I started to learn how to play lead bluegrass and fiddle tunes on an acoustic guitar, every bluegrass player I knew would settle for nothing less than a Dreadnought. The Dreadnought is a style of guitar created in 1916 in a collaboration between the guitar manufacturer, the C.F. Martin Co. and the Oliver Ditson Co., a retailer. The body of the Dreadnought was larger and deeper than most guitars. The name was coined from the huge British battleship, “HMS Dreadnought.” Dreadnoughts were known for their bass response and projection. They produced greater volume than the smaller guitars of the day and appealed to singers who wanted the accompaniment of a guitar. Though poorly received at first, this style of guitar became Martin’s best seller in the 1930’s. Of course the rest of the industry followed, and today the Dreadnought is one of the most popular styles of acoustic guitar on the market and is produced by many

Comparing 6 String And 12 String Guitars
Comparing 6 String And 12 String Guitars by Gray Rollins - 6-string or 12-string Acoustic guitar, which should you get? Both have pros and cons, and both are excellent instruments, depending on what you’re looking to accomplish on guitar and how much you are willing to spend. In this article, we’ll go over both guitars, which will hopefully help you make an educated decision on which to purchase. The Main Difference Between Both Guitars: The major difference, of course, is the number of strings. On a 6-string Acoustic guitar in standard tuning, there is one low e, one a, one d, one g, one b and one high e string, in that order. A 12-string acoustic has two low e, two a, two d, two g, two b, and two high e strings, all in that order. 12-string guitars have the ability to be tuned in two different tunings, while 6-string guitars don’t. On the other hand, 12-string guitars also have a lot more tension on their necks, and as a result, their necks tend to warp after only a few years

A Brief History of Epiphone Acoustic Guitars by William McRea
Epiphone had its true beginnings in Greece where Anastasios Stathopoulos started out by making traditional stringed instruments such as violins, lutes, mandolins, and a Greek instrument called the lioutos. The family then moved to Smyrna in Asia Minor but later fled to New York due to persecution. After moving to New York, Anastasios son, Epi Stathopoulos, inherited the family instrument making business. During the early years of Epi s running of the business, the company was called the House of Stathopoulos. But, Epi changed it from that to Epiphone. He filed for the change in advance, but it did not become official until 1928. The new company was named for Epi, the owner, and phonos, the Greek word for sound. At this point, it was called the Epiphone Banjo Company. Epiphone launched their first guitars in 1931. They had a full line of what is known as the archtop style of guitar which are popular with jazz and blues players. After their launch they become one of the biggest guitar
