May Grocery Challenge: Week 2 Results
Well, I didn't do as well as I did last week. This week I had to go to the grocery store to get some food to get my hubby through the week. We also went to Walmart for cleaning supplies, and Sam's Club for some bulk food stuff. My goal is to only spend $140/week on groceries and cleaning supplies for a total of $700. Martins (groceries): $55.00Sam's Club: $94.00Walmart: $13.00Total: $162.00Yikes,

Free Canvas Grocery Bags for Luba’s SF Real Estate Blog Readers
A while ago I noted that San Francisco had put a ban on plastic grocery bags. Since then, many cities have followed suit, or at least have contemplated following suit. The problem is that stores aren’t using the biodegradable starch based bags and instead are using paper bags - a big problem for tree lovers and [...]

Tips on Saving Money at the Grocery Store/Supermarket
One sure-fire way to save money, is to buy the generic equivalent, of the product you are looking for (If it’s available at the store where you’re shopping). For example, instead of spending $4.99 or more on ACT Fluoride rinse at Wal-Mart, buy the generic equivalent, EQUATE (Wal-Mart’s generic brand) Anti-Cavity rinse which is somewhere [...]

A website to show you ALL the grocery deals in your neighborhood
*I know this looks like a paid ad, but it isn't! LOL*About two months ago my husband and I were discussing the cost of groceries in the many different area's of the country where we have lived and/or vacationed. Once I get a wild hair idea I usually run with it so I found myself setting up an excel spreadsheet of 40 'typical' or 'easy to find' items and then painstakingly searching for grocery stores in different parts of the county and then to find their online ads and finally, to jot down and compare prices. I never did find a site that did my work for me, so after I got three different stores in 3 different cities/states I called it 'good enough' and was able to let that crazy thought process go. (Yes I do odd things like this... it's probably not surprising I actually liked school

      Came Home From Grocery Shopping
It was not long time ago that we went out to buy some groceries and just recently, we went out again just to buy some few groceries we've needed. And guess what, how much were the prices now, especially the gas prices, oh my gosh! Thankful enough, we had a small car! lol!Even though, there are some coupons and sale at the store, but still it costs a lot. And one thing I noticed too, when we bought a new box of diapers, we noticed that they lessen the amount of diapers in one box, supposedly, it was about 104 diapers in it, a size 3 diapers and now, it was only 88 diapers at the same price. It is quite expensive now to have more kids eh! It is better to just go home and raise our kids in the Philippines, since the dollar to pesos conversion over there, is quite in higher value, well,

Week 1 Of The May Grocery Challenge
This month I decided to join Give Me Back My Five Buck's May Challenge. This month it was a grocery challenge. Right now I have a budget of $150/week for groceries for two people. I know, I know, that sounds so high. However, my husband is 300 lbs and eats enough for 2 adults. In addition, this is groceries for 7 breakfasts, 14 lunches, 14 daytime snacks, evening snacks, and full dinners for 7 days. It's a lot of food! I initially struggled with spending so much on groceries, because before we used to eat out quite a lot and I was only spending about $75/week on groceries. However, when I compared the additional grocery money with the amount we were spending on eating out every week, we're still coming out ahead. I joined the challenge because I still feel like I could be cutting expense

Tenth Circuit Upholds Grocery Stores’ Gasoline Discounts Tied to Food Sales
Discounts Upheld - Reversing the district court, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals held on April 25 that a supermarket can sell gasoline below cost under Colorado law when the sale is contingent on purchasing groceries above cost, and the price of the total bundle is above cost. See Parish Oil Co. v. Dillon Cos., No. 07-1032, 2008 WL 1837228, __ F.3d __ (10th Cir. 2008).Defendant Dillon Companies, a subsidiary of Kroger, operates grocrery stores that include retail gasoline filling stations on the same premises. The stores offered discounts of up to 20 cents a gallon when customers satisfied minimum purchase requirements from the grocery stores. Publix Grocery Store First Impression
Have you ever wondered how different grocery stores measure up against one another?Which one would you pick? Do you have a favorite and a never go to again store?I recently visited, for the first time, a Publix grocery store in South Carolina. These stores are scattered though the south eastern sates such as Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. The First thing I noticed was the parking lot, which had well marked green buggy collectors to drop your grocery cart off in once you are finished loading your groceries. Nice, some grocery stores don't have grocery cart collectors in the parking lot at all. Then the parking lot is one big buggy fest with rogue buggies slamming into the sides of parked cars.Walking through the door I was presented with a open layout that had all sixteen aisles lai

Save a ton on your grocery bill...
If you are like us, you probably have a pretty well stocked pantry/freezer with the basics and spend all too much every week on groceries at the store. Now with the jumping cost of groceries it is becoming more important to be frugal. You know an apple (red delicious) now costs me more than a chocolate bar? Friggin insane. Anyway, maybe you already do it, if you do, leave me a comment, but the big opportunity here is making an mental inventory of your pantry items/freezer items and fridge items and write up a menu for the week. Put down anything you want on it. Now think of the mental inventory and try to see how much of it you can make with what you already have sitting at home. What is left is your shopping list. Add to it staples like milk and bread or cereal or whatever. You

Credit Cards Can Help to Decrease Grocery Spending
When you do shopping at groceries you can use credit cards with various cash back bonuses or reward points. In fact many rewards credit cards may be used in any kind of stores, but some of them can be used only in a specific grocery store. If you get a habit to pay for your groceries with a credit card, it may give you a real benefit opportunity. Some rewards offers allow the cardholders to save approximately 10% with cash back! If your credit bills are not defaulted, such money can scale down the level of your debt. Thus, try to avoid late payments; otherwise your reward bonuses will be devaluated. There are reward offers that accrue various points to every dollar expended. These points can be used to receive gift certificates, checks and so on. If you are intending to use reward credit c

Total spent there was about $59. I was really happy that I was able to spend so little and get enough for a week of food, assuming I stick to my written plan.Saturday a friend, A, and I went to the Rochester Public Market. It's only open a few days a week, but is awesome. We both only cook for two, and most of the food came in large amounts, so we split it. And the second best thing is, they are actually grocery bags! Nice isn't. Another good thing about the bag is eco-friendly meaning, they are recyclable. Those bags are made of cotton mesh, so you'll be sure to protect the nature. And they come in different colors. See the image above. Get to choose from cranberry, blue, celery seed, gold, chili. Have you ever have bought potatoes, sweet potatoes or yams and noticed sprouts coming out of them, dig a hole and plant them in the ground and in a few weeks you may have your own potato plant. Not a fan of those, why not try garlic, ginger, onions, peanuts, avocados, dried beans, apples, tomatoes, peppers, or anything else you can imagine. This year I am going to attempt potatoes and garlic, how about yourself?

      512. the grocery store line
when a person lines up behind me in a grocery store, i feel obliged to tell them that they have just chosen the slowest line.and when i do, they say, how can that be? this is the shortest line.then i say, oh yes—it will be! that is a certainty!then after everything is said and done, and i'm packing my jar of tomato sauce and package of meatballs in my environmentally friendly, canvass bag an hour later, i look back at the person i tried to save.they usually sigh and ask, who are you? what is your name, grocery-store-line seer?i smile with a nod and touch to the brim of my villanova dad baseball cap, and say, you have a good day, ya hear?and then i turn and exit out the auto-sliding glass door to jump in my hybrid prius and ride off into the carbon heavy sunset.just like i always dreamed

Australian Commission Investigates Competitiveness of Grocery Industry
Last week, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ("ACCC") announced that it is holding public inquiry into the competitiveness of grocery prices in Australia, as mentioned here.Amid concerns that grocery prices are rising faster than the prices of other goods, the inquiry will consider: the current structure of the grocery industry at the supply, wholesale, and retail levels, including mergers and acquisitions by the national retailers; the nature of competition and the pricing practices in the grocery industry; and factors influencing efficient pricing of inputs along the supply chain, according to a press release from the Assistant Treasurer. The ACCC is soliciting public submissions on topics to be detailed in an Issues Paper to be released shortly. As I mentioned in a recen

Produce, dairy, meats, and bread can usually be found by avoiding the store aisles. The aisles house the things that most people should avoid...processed, boxed, and canned goods. The exception is frozen vegetables. They do tend to be located in the frozen food aisles. Pick up those frozen vegetables, but avoid the frozen pizzas, etc. What about canned vegetables, you ask? Of the three choices, fresh, frozen, or canned; canned should be at the bottom of the list. Canned vegetables tend to have lots of extra sodium added to them and they

Saving money at the grocery store

Right next to them was London Broil on sale at $1.99 a pound. At that point I figured beef was beef and bought the London Broil for the meat for the pot roast. I then went to the ground beef section to buy some ground beef for a "dirty rice" dinner. Again

How to Pick Up a Girl in the Grocery Store
You probably already know that grocery stores are great places to pick up women. There are not only plenty of women to choose from, but a grocery store offers many ways to pick up women without ever letting them know what you are doing.A man can easily act helpless in the grocery store which is one way to attract a woman. Just approach a woman that you are interested in and ask her which type of fruit, steak, or even detergent to pick out. Most women will be willing to help you out. Try to use this starting point to strike up a conversation. You may want to ask her what kind of recipe you can try with whatever you are looking at, or perhaps you can just be honest with her and tell her that you do not actually need help, but you thought she was so beautiful that you had to approach her. If you aren't willing to be that bold, then try to move the conversation away from food or products and ask her questions about her life. She will get the hint that you are interested in her very quickl

Stylish Grocery Totes, Eco-Pretty and Eco-Practical, Even for Trick-or-Treating
      b. happybags, Bags for the Planet With all the incessant hoo-hah about giving your kids reusable trick-or-treat bags this year, we wanted to remind good-intentioned people that Halloween-themed cloth bags with cutesy pumpkins and witches emblazoned on them may not be the best idea after all. Buying reusable trick-or-treat bags that only would be used once a year, if that, or tossed out because you've accumulated dozens of them from various eco-pushing sources, isn't that eco-friendly in the long run. If you opt out of the classic pillowcase for candy-hauling, for pretty's sake, please try to go more practical and seasonally neutral in your choice of reusable bag. The Grocery Store Question Is Much Discussed In Vintage Vegas
One of our readers raises a question that I posed to the Business and Development Folks at the Citizens Leadership Academy just last week.   Jack, I was curious if you have heard where the people that are living downtown in all those beautiful lofts, condo’s etc. are going to grocery shop? I live in McNeil and would love to think they may bring a Whole Foods to the center of town.  What do you know…? By the way I am the mother of the two brothers who own Lovebird Apparel!   Sincerely, Suzan Benett   First Suzan, I’ve plugged your son’s really great collection of art as apparel several times. You should be real proud of them.   As to the groceries, it’s really a chicken and egg question of what comes first. Parcells credit for bargain grocery shopping
It's easy to point out Bill Parcells' early-round draft whiffs during his Valley Ranch tenure. CB Terence Newman and OLB DeMarcus Ware are the only first- or second-round picks from the Tuna's four draft classes producing like high picks. You have to give Parcells credit, however, for stocking this roster with mid- and late-round steals. Eleven current Cowboys were picked by Parcells in the third round or later. Follow the jump for a look at each one. TE Jason Witten (third round, 2003): You can make a strong argument that Witten is the best all-around tight end in the league. San Diego's Antonio Gates is the only TE with more yards and catches than Witten (42-540). Indy's Dallas Clark and New England's Ben Watson are the only ones with more than Witten's four touchdowns. Witten is a better blocker than all those dudes. ILB Bradie James (fourth round, 2003): Dallas defense's emotional leader and leading tackler. Per the stats from the coaches' film study, he had 59 tack
