      Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

In our series of insider interviews with hoteliers, we caught up with Philip Truelove (what a name!) – GM at Bob de Niro’s super-cool hangout, The Greenwich Hotel in New York – to find out what makes him tick and reveal some behind-the-scenes goings-on (You lookin’ at me?). The Greenwich is located in - clue’s [...]

2012 Olympic Equestrian Venue - Greenwich London
Image from rashdash After serious deliberation, the Olympic committee has confirmed that the site for the equestrian events of the 2012 Olympics will be Greenwich Park in London. The cross country event will be held in the park and the main arena will be on the grounds of the National Maritime Museum. Both of the sites [...]

      Bad news for Greenwich Park?
My eye was caught by the headline of the Evening Standard lying on my colleague's desk this evening, "Greenwich 'must host' 2012 equestrian events". A government funded report is set to say that it would be 'too expensive' to put the equestrian events at any alternative location.

The Occasional Tourist - Part Five, Royal Observatory (Greenwich)
Today we took a trip across Blackheath and through the Park to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Our original destination was the Planetarium, which we never got around to in the event, but the Observatory itself is a worthwhile day out... and even better, free entry! We started by getting a bus from Charlton to the edge of Blackheath from where we walked to the top entrance of Greenwich Park.

      Greenwich café
Built in 1914 the Greenwich café is the well-known meeting point of Brussels chess players where at any time of day or night multiple groups of players abound inside. The original decor completed in 1916 gives the pub its pleasant and authentic feel, where probably little changed from the time Magritte apparently frequented the place. [...]

The All-Too-Quiet Greenwich Village 4th of July Weekend: Adios, Senor Swanky's
I'm feeling the old boho neighborhood half empty rather than half full this weekend. The Fourth of July holiday seemed quieter than usual, and I know that the main reason for the empty streets, aside from the tens of thousands that departed the city last Thursday via the Holland Tunnel, was the steamy humidity and persistent overcast skies. It always looked like it was going to rain even when it d

      Crossing the Greenwich Meridian
All good things have to come to an end. I took this photo of the arch marking the Greenwich Meridian while on the way back to Madrid by bus from Barcelona. That's the end of our Spanish adventure. We're now in Doha, Qatar for an eight hour layover before flying back to Manila. But I won't be in Manila for long because in a few days, I'm flying to Chicago!

Muslims say Mecca not Greenwich should be the source of the world´s time
Muslim "scholars" have decided there is yet another way to implement their Global Caliphate. Insisting that "Mecca is the center of the world's land" they want to change the reference point for world time from Greenwich, England to... where else but Mecca. They have even invented the Mecca watch. Muslims balk at what they feel is the Western world inflicting Greenwich upon them. In fact these inbred thinking "scholars" even want to discard Western maps. More here and here.

      Greenwich nightlife
Last night myself and a friend went out on the town in Greenwich. It's been a while since we've done this (before Christmas in fact). First we went to the delightful 'Gypsy Moth' (which is confusingly right next to the Cutty Sark, which means that I always want to call it by the wrong ship's name!). I first made the acquaintance of this pub about 7 years ago when Rich and I used to go there a lot

The Free Range Rooster and Hen of Greenwich Village, with Update
Many of the sleepy, late-arising citizens of Greenwich Village awoke this morning to the alarming and seemingly unbelievable sounds of "Cockadoodledoo!" Arising early myself, as is my habit, and strolling the non-farmed streets of Bleecker and LaGuardia with the two hounds, I encountered a disheveled black rooster, cockadoodledoo-ing away, at full register, in the midst of the LaGuardia Community Gardens. Greeting passersby on the way to the Morton Williams Supermarket, the rooster seemed happy struttin' its stuff amidst all the well-tended perennials. I chatted with a man peering through the fence who said he was just awakened by this loud "Cockadoodledoo!," and he said his wife told him he was dreaming. But, wait, there's more! In another little fenced enclosure, at the very SE corner of

Estella, located in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, is the product of a husband-and-wife team, Chike Chukwulozie and Jean Polsky. Chike (a Cornell-trained former corporate attorney) and Jean (a Harvard MBA and former Bergdorf Goodman buyer) opened the store in 2002 to fill a void in the children's clothing market. They wanted to create something fresh and distinctive - unique baby clothes and kids' clothes that are brought to life with modern designs, incredible detail, unusual colors and sumptuous fabrics. The result of their innovative approach is an intimate shop filled with gorgeous items that were selected for their beauty and character rather than for their brand.Estella is not a big department store crammed with commercial labels or a trendy baby clothes shop filled with all the same b

Greenwich - The home of longitude
We have finally made it to the UK, and although jobless and homeless, have managed to have a great time so far, although today's wet and freezing London weather is testing our patience. The UK being a very old country (in the western sense in any case) means that there is an abundance of "culture" and ye olde science that appeals to me - although I must say I haven't found good coffee yet - the Anglos clearly didn't put much effort into coffee science...I will start a series of stories on the sciencey places I have been, starting with Greenwich.GreenwichGreenwich, to the east of the city of London, is home to the Royal Observatory, whose mission is to illustrate for everyone the importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and their relationship with people. Greenwich is also home to Greenwich Mean Time and the prime meridian, which is the meridian at which longitude is defined to have zero degrees. Longitude is an important way of defining where on the globe you are - and was o

      Greenwich Village Gunfight
New York City is mourning the deaths of two volunteer police officers and a bartender in Greenwich Village on Wednesday night. I was leaving the East Village just after the shooting, following a quick dinner and house-sitting orientation at the apartment of one of my bosses. I'll be staying at her place to take care of her 18-year old cat tonight through Tuesday morning while she is at a conference in Los Angeles and her husband is out of town.I heard faint conversation on the train of a shooting that night as I rode the L across town and transferred to an uptown 1. By the time I got to my apartment in Harlem, it was breaking news. But the story continues to sadden as more details are released. The victims were young: Alfred Romaro was a 35-year-old Mexican immigrant following the American dream as a waiter and bartender; Yevgeniy Marshalik was a 19-year-old political science major at NYU and volunteer police officer; Nicholas T. Pekearo - also a volunteer police officer - was a 28-yea
