Leafy green veggies...most people realize these are full of vitamins, minerals and of course fiber, but did you know that a once-a-day habit of eating these could reduce your risk of lung cancer? That's what a recently reported study from Spain found.Researchers there examined the diets of 617 adult men and women, half who had lung cancer and half who didn't. Their results showed that those subjects who ate their leafy greens at least once a day had a lower risk of developing lung cancer than those who ate them less than 5 times per week.Interestingly enough, this result was even true for those individuals who had smoked in the past. One more reason to go for the greens!

Mixing a good salad lies in combining textures. For example, the crispness of romaine with the softness of butter lettuce, colors - the red of radicchio and the dark green of watercress, shapes - the round leaves of mache, the tangled leaves of curly endive, flavors - bitterness of endive, pepperiness of arugula, blandness of iceberg, tartness of sorrel. It is generally wise to start with milder greens (butter lettuce, romaine) and accent them with spicy, bitter, and tart greens. However, it is also possible to make a salad of just one green - endive, iceberg, romaine, spinach - with appropriate accents.Arugula (rocket, roquette, rugula) - thin leaves with peppery flavor, sue sparingly.Belgian endive (witloof chicory) - white, multileaved heads, mild but bitter.Butter lettuce (and Bibb, Bo
Admittedly, I'm sort of on board with this outlook. It's the first time I've seen it published so blatantly in the mainstream media though. An excerpt:On the day we meet, the Daily Mail has launched a campaign to rid Britain of plastic shopping bags. The initiative sits comfortably within the current canon of eco ideas, next to ethical consumption, carbon offsetting, recycling and so on - all of which are premised on the calculation that individual lifestyle adjustments can still save the planet. This is, Lovelock says, a deluded fantasy. Most of the things we have been told to do might make us feel better, but they won't make any difference. Global warming has passed the tipping point, and catastrophe is unstoppable."It's just too late for it," he says. "Perhaps if we'd gone along routes

Radiohead's Colin Greenwood has revealed the results of a green study into the effects on the environment from the band's tours, and suggested their future gigs are held in city centres to improve use of more efficient transport links and to reduce reliance on flights. The band teamed up with Best Foot Forward, who compared the carbon output from two different kinds of tours they've done recently in America: an out of town 'big gig'/amphitheatre tour, and a smaller theatre tour in city centres. The results have been posted in full on Radiohead's official blog.
In the slow crawl of news leading up to our annual CES blowout, we bring you this, the Nokia Eco Sensor concept device. The device consists of two parts: a wearable mobile phone (duh, it's Nokia) with giant display and a remote sensing unit which keeps tabs on your health and external environment. Nokia research envisions that the sensor unit would be worn on a wrist or neck strap made of solar cells. It would then communicate back to your phone via near field communications (NFC) or RFID. What you monitor (i.e., the sensors you get) will be customizable based on user preference. You know, like the burn from your jetpack and rate of your daily food replication. Thanks for the look into the future Nokia, now get back to your S60 development please, time's a'wastin'.

Who was it that described the greens as watermelons? Green on the outside, red on the inside?
One day people will see the greens for what they are, a laughing stock. A joke. A repacking of old commie ideals in green wrapping.

By: Randall UlbrichtPutting is a combination of the mind, reading and execution. I have maintained my 12 handicap over the last twenty years simply by increasing my prowess on the green, while age has negatively impacted most of the other parts of my game. This article deals with the second aspect of the putting triad, reading greens.A golf green is like a book, not a sentence. If you are on a strange course and didnt take a couple minutes on the practice green, it is like you are opening up a mystery novel at chapter 14 instead of the first page. Thats fine if you want to learn the "plot" during the next few chapters/greens, but your score and countenance will reflect your early confusion.Let us assume that you took a little time on the practice green before assaulting the course. Do not try to fix flaws in your putting technique during your few minutes practicing. Instead, determine two things:1) The speed of the green (stimp)2) How much the ball breaks at that green speed. So instead

A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals billboard chides Al Gore.
Trying to Connect the Dinner Plate to Climate Change
By CLAUDIA H. DEUTSCH

EVER since “An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore has been the darling of environmentalists, but that movie hardly endeared him to the animal rights folks. According to them, the most inconvenient truth of all is that raising animals for meat contributes more to global warming than all the sport utility vehicles combined.
The biggest animal rights groups do not always overlap in their missions, but now they have coalesced around a message that eating meat is worse for the environment than driving. They and smaller groups have started advertising campaigns that try to equate vegetarianism with curbing greenhouse gases.
Some backlash again

Two of my very favorite vegetables are asparagus and mushrooms. I really enjoy their flavors and when combined, they are just sensational.
I came across this recipe earlier today and thought I’d share. I haven’t tried yet but it sounds like a yummy salad.
It uses a variety of mushrooms including oyster, shitake and portabellini along with baby greens and a blend of dijon mustard, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and garlic…YUM!

A great article in the news today told me:Sickly Lily Allen is taking her lead from Popeye in a bid to keep up her strength. She's shagging a thin bird called Olive? No?The singer has gone on a health kick after being forced to pull out of a string of European gigs because of a throat infection.Amy Winehouse has done the same. She's now using low fat cocaine. There's even a picture of her carrying some spinach home. She's clearly new to this, because you know how much spinach reduces. The amount she's got there will cook down to just less than a mouthful.Great, that's something we'll see her crying about on MySpace.
For the past few days the news has been full of a liquidity squeeze. Lenders are worried about their clients’ exposure to mortgage-backed securities that have been repackaged into tranched instruments, which are performing badly because the original sub-prime borrowers are not making repayments. The European crisis, which appears to be a response to BNP Paribas’ decision to freeze some its funds containing the bad assets, will probably blow over once we get a clearer picture of exactly who holds the losses. But it is certainly another sign that lenders are getting tighter and debt will not be so cheap in coming years.
What does this mean for green consumers? It means they will spend a greater proportion of their money on servicing debts, including mortgages, and will be more likely to save any of the remainder. A segmentation is a useful filter for looking at the issue. GfK Roper’s (a marketing consultancy) is one of many similar categorisations and consists of:

Summer is almost here. You can already smell fresh mowed grass of neighborhood laws and here the kids running through sprinklers. It is time for all of us to get geared up for the long mowing season ahead. With the price of fuel continuing to climb higher, an aging lawn mower engine that is declining in power or fuel efficiency may not be worth the time and energy to use this summer. Yet the cost of a new lawn mower or lawn tractor may not be in your budget this year. Plus, we hear every day about the importance of being green these days and tossing your old lawn mower into the trash heap is not in line with reducing waste and protecting the environment.Repowering your lawn mower or lawn tractor using repower kits for equipment made by Toro, Cushman, or Jacobsen can be the best preparation you need for the upcominglong lawn or golf course mowing season. The kits made for Toro lawn mowers and Toro lawn tractors are perfect examples of how small engine repower kits work and benefit lawn
Yes they are. The Greens are officially the "shit on the heel of humanity" I proclaimed them to be elsewhere.
Fresh from the ridiculous hypocritical Live Earth debacle comes the news that the population of one of their strongest areas are also in fact the worst for greenhouse pollution in the state.
I swear you can't make this shit up.
DOCKLANDS, Southbank, East and West Melbourne have emerged as the worst Victorian greenhouse gas polluters.
And the wealthy are the villains in the war against environmental degradation, having a far more damaging impact than people on lower incomes.
The Greens polled 15.7% in the Melbourne electorate (which covers all the mentioned pollution areas) at the 2004 Federal election. In the Melbourne electorate in the State election of 2006 they polled 47.99% of the vote (after preferences).

Summer is fast approaching and it’s the time of year when we start to apply sunscreen to our little ones to protect their delicate skin. But what about their eyes? They’re irreplaceable, and they can get sunburned too. In fact, according to the FRUBI SHADES site, “The human eye is ten times more sensitive to harmful UV rays than your skin. The lens of a child allows 70% more UV rays to reach the delicate retina than in an adult. Approximately half of the entire time we spend outdoors in our lifetime occurs in the first twenty years of our life.” Armed with that knowledge, we should all be picking up a pair or three of Frubi Shades!

Giada did Wilted Greens last week, and it got me thinking about different ways to cook these Great Greens. They seem to benefit considerably from Asian style seasonings, as well as Italian style sautéeing with plenty of garlic and garnished with cheese. The list of nutritional benefits of kale and Swiss chard and other greens is long, but don't let that stop you from enjoying them. Blanching or steaming them before sautéeing makes them more tender and easier for first timers to appreciate. They cook down substantially, so allow 1 big bunch for 2 people.Kale with Garlic and Ginger (serves 4)There are 2 methods for this recipe. The first is to cook the kale first and THEN sauté. The second is to skip to precooking. I have recently been reading literature on Georgism. Georgists believe that everything an individual creates is their own personal property and the government has no right to take possession of it. Separating Georgists from anarchocapitalists, however, is the georgist belief that land cannot be truly owned, only "rented" from the community. As a result, georgist assert that all forms of taxation, whether they be on labor, capital, or improved property, are unjust. Taxation on the unimproved value of land, i.e. the value of a piece of land if there were no improvements on it, is taxable.Georgists assert that this land-value tax (LVT) is merely rent paid back to the community. As a result of a tax on only a piece of property's land, the growth of communities will be natural (no urban sprawl), and wilderness will be preserved without the coercive power of government. While reading up on georgism, I couldn't help but think about Ward Republicanism, a "Confederation of Confederacies", and
Light pollution is generally seen as a conservation issue. Mainstream environmentalists are now concerned with threats to the human habitat rather than preservation of natural beauty, and findings published today by the British Astronomical Society are unlikely cause more than a ripple. The research showed that fewer than half of us can see 10 stars in Orion (on a clear night you should be able to see 50).
The green lobby pipes up from time to time about light pollution. Southampton City Council’s plans for a ‘Laser Gateway’, four high power lasers on the Clock Tower designed to brand the port, for example, were of course criticised by the local Campaign for Rural England and Friends of the Earth. But with greenhouse gas emissions on the agenda, most activists have bigger fish to fry.
There is an interesting trend here. While we are quickly waking up to the fact that we have ecological footprints, we are not becoming more aware of Earth’s natural rhythms - nor do we want to. Th

Elizabeth May, the Green party leader, heaped praise on Dion at a news conference to end the Commons session. She called the former Liberal cabinet minister "a very, very good environment minister" and said that while the Liberal record on fighting greenhouse gas emissions wasn't great, they were "still light years ahead of Harper on the Kyoto file"What they really should be doing is presenting themselves as a centrist alternative to the Liberals, a party for non-NDPers concerned about the environment, a party for the "disenchanted" (or lazy) voter, and a party for the centre-right that didn't like the Clean Air Act. That's a significant voter base to start off on. It might even get them a seat or two. So why suck up to the Liberals when they really should be going on their own? It'll be interesting to see if they run any negative campaign ads against each other.

It's very likely that if the environment stays as a top issue going into the next campaign, the Greens will have a shot at taking a few seats, probably from more left-leaning ridings. I have a feeling that the NDP's environment voters will lose quite a bit of ground to the Greens next election. The only "real" alternative to the two big parties (and their perceived weakness on this issue) was the NDP before. Voting Green was out of protest. Layton may have won more seats for the party last time around, but their popular vote rose only 2%. That could easily be lost, and then some. What could happen is that the Greens get a handful of seats, and the NDP lose a handful to the Liberals. And to imagine, just a few months ago we were talking about the collapse of the Liberal party. Now it's the NDP that seems most endangered.
An internal NDP straw poll on the London-North-Centre byelection apparently shows the Liberal Party in a narrow lead, with Green Party leader Elizabeth May closely trailing in second place. The Conservatives polled in third, and the NDP a distant fourth. If this is indeed true, Canada may be awarded with an historical result at the London ballot boxes tomorrow evening.Just how many NDPers, in light of the leaked poll, would consider voting Green, so as to prevent a Liberal candidate from winning? Or even more interesting, with the Conservatives seemingly out of the picture, how many "green Grits" would consider tipping the scales over towards Green Party leader Elizabeth May, and voting with their conscience? Knowing that Canada's greenhouse gas emissions rose by 44% during the 13+ years of Liberal government after Canada became a signatory of the Kyoto Protocol, surely any potential future Liberal government would be best held to its promises if accompanied in the House by Green op
This truth thing seems to be catching on. First, Ford buys thetruthabouttrucks.com. Then Audi capitalizes (literally) on TRUTH IN ENGINEERING. And now a coalition of nine environmental groups-- the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the League of Conservation Voters, the National Environmental Trust, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, Friends of the Earth, Conservation Law Foundation and Environment California-- have launched TruthAboutToyota.com. The hate site takes Toyota to task for opposing the more aggressive of two congressional bills mandating hikes in federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) averages. The accompanying USA Today full-page ad and press release takes plenty of media-friendly bites out of ToMoCo's ass. "Just because Toyota is taking over General Motor's market share does not mean that Toyota has to take on GM's anti-environmental lobbying practic

Have you ever tried mustard greens? Related to kale, cabbage, and collard greens, they are the peppery leafy greens of the mustard plant and are used frequently in Chinese, Japanese, and Indian cooking. I find them less bitter than kale or collard greens, and more peppery, like arugula. ...
