Greenpeace and other “Green” activists group are trying to force change in the environmental policy on Apple’s product.
They want Apple products to be free of the toxic chemicals, such as brominated flame retardants, that can be found in its American counterparts.
Zeina Alhajj campaign coordinator for Greenpeace says: “The iPhone is a unique product and for us it is a missed opportunity for Apple to combine the innovation of the product with a green performance.”
Last month, Greenpeace accused Apple of failing to make “early progress” with the iPhone toward the company’s stated goals for eco friendliness. Apple responded by reiterating its intent to make all of it’s products free of hazardous materials by the end of 2008, and stressed all components used in the phone comply with the European Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

While green peace has done good things in the past, to fabricate information about anything is contrary to what we think is right. There are a lot of people in business and government each day that feel that they need to fabricate information, the sad side effect of this is that while they grab headlines, the end result is that the organization or group is tarnished because they were unable to tell the truth.
We are used to media spin, and we are used to calling companies to the mat for things that they do wrong, we have no problem pinging on Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Apple, and the rest of the lot that makes up our current technology base. Nor do we have a whole lot of problems pinging on each other when there is obvious Public Relations mischief happening.
But when Green Peace decides that it wants to be an attention whore and falsify information about the Apple Iphone, well that is below respectability. This will not hurt the Iphone, nor will this hurt Apple, this will make green

In a scathing report released Monday, environmental activism group Greenpeace said that, despite Apple's recent claims that it would assume a greener profile, the company's iPhone fell from a toxic tree. The handset, according to the group, contains several toxic substances including brominated flame retardants as well as phthalates plasticisers and chloride, both substances characteristic of PVC. Greenpeace pointed to Apple's mobile handset competitors as examples of companies doing the right thing.
Although Apple’s disputed lack of commitment to produce greener handsets was heavily criticized by Greenpeace on Monday, an Apple spokesperson said in an interview to Macworld: “Like all Apple products worldwide, iPhone complies with RoHS [Restriction of Hazardous Substances], the world’s toughest restrictions on toxic substances in electronics.”
“As we have said, Apple will voluntarily eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs by the end of 2008,” said the Apple spokesperson, referring to an open letter publicized earlier this year proclaiming Apple’s plans to completely eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs in its products by the end of 2008. There are also some plans to eliminate or reduce the use of other chemicals including Arsenic and Mercury.
Despite that, in the USA, The Center for Environmental Health on Monday said that it has given Apple 60-days legal notice — a step required by California law before a lawsuit is launched. The accusation would be based on Gre

“Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors on environmental issues.”
On the other hand, the guys at Greenpeace state:

In order to raise awareness for global warming, Greenpeace and the photographer Spencer Tunick got hundreds of naked people to pose for photos on a melting glacier.
Spencer Tunick was on a ladder with a mega phone as he directed the massive crowd of nearly 600 people from all over Europe who were concerned for the environment.
Spencer Tunick then photographed them on a rocky outcrop overlooking the glacier, which is the largest in the Alps.
The volunteers also had to pose for photographs by Spencer Tunick on the ice as he took photos of them lying down.

La organización Greenpeace reconoce a Lenovo como la empresa número uno en prácticas responsables al medio ambiente.
Este pasado Diciembre, Lenovo comenzó un programa de reciclaje gratis para PCs, portátiles, servers y pantallas así como cualquier portátil de IBM marca ThinkPad, PCs bajo la marca ThinkCentre y monitores ThinkVision in China. Lenovo ofrece programas de reciclaje en cualquier país donde tenga una presencia.
Lenovo también ofrece un reporte de la cantidad que recicla como porcentaje de ventas, aunque la empresa, según Greenpeace, todavía tiene que erradicar de su línea productos con materiales peligrosos. A French court has ordered Greenpeace France to take down a web page with a Google Map that shows locations of commercial, genetically engineered corn fields in France. Greenpeace argues the online maps should not be censored because an EU law requires the French government to make the crop site information public anyway. Greenpeace responded by carving a giant 'X' crop circle into one of the genetically engineered corn fields the courts say can no longer be Google-mapped.
