French La Petite Reine has come up with a greener alternative to business deliveries by using truck-sized cargo bikes. The firm has a fleet of about 60 Cargocycles for hire in Paris, Bordeaux, Rouen, and Dijon. Weighing 80 kg, each Cargocycle can transport about 180 kg of merchandise in its 1,400-liter cargo space. The Cargocycles can go most anywhere and they can park easily between two cars. Cargocycle deliveries are completely nonpolluting, in terms of both emissions and noise. Cargocycles are also available for lease or sale, should you be inclined to have your own.
In celebration of Earth Day, here are 15 ways to make our world a greener place:
Turning off your computer when it’s not in use is a smart way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help fight against the effects of climate change.
Turn off all unnecessary lighting. When you leave a room, be sure to turn off the lights.
Switch all your bills to paperless or e-statements and consider canceling
With Earth Day approaching, you're probably thinking about the different ways you can do your bit for the environment. Well, if you're reading this, it's a pretty safe bet you're using a computer, and computers generate waste in all kinds of ways. But by changing just a few habits, you can keep more stuff out of landfills, save energy, and even tuck a few extra dollars in your wallet. Here are five ideas to get you started.1. Save Paper and Ink I receive a lot of press releases and other printed documents that I never read more than once (if ever), so when I can get away with it I print on the reverse side of these pieces, reserving my pristine sheets for letters and other important documents. The savings are tangible: I've bought exactly one 500-sheet pack of paper in the last two years.Y

Fleet managers from across Australia today will test drive 31 low-emission vehicles at Sandown International Raceway.
The event, organised by Future Climate Australia, RACV and EPA Victoria, has been prompted by soaring fuel costs and the new requirements for companies to log and pay for their greenhouse gas emissions.
Future Climate Australia executive director Henry O’Clery said that while new vehicle sales exceeded one million for the first time last year, only 13 per cent qualified as low-emission vehicles.
“We acknowledge that fleet buyers’ hands are tied due to local vehicle manufacturers lagging behind European and Asian counterparts in terms of LEV production,” he said.
“However, this drive day and forum will demonstrate the availability of performance

Green to its core, this Zero electric motocross bike does make its mark in making this world a better place to live in. Or at least your neighborhood! Because it won’t disturb you with all the noise that the two-stroke gasoline engines produce. Powered by 300 amps it will be able to hit 0 -30 within 2 seconds, with 100% torque being made available at all instances. Weighing just 140 pounds, a 2 hour charge offers a 40 mile range. They say the grass is always greener but, of course, it never really is because sometimes there’s a whole lot of moss in amongst it.
Take for instance the off and on popularity of Brits moving to France….
The majority do it because they are trying to get away from the bad things in British life these days. They don’t like the rising crime and the bad schools and the too fast pace of life. So, they look towards France and it seems like the UK was maybe 30 years ago.
It is, but would you really have wanted to go back to the UK of 30 years ago?
Yes, there’s not that much crime in the areas in which Brits habitually move but then there’s not much crime in the UK countryside either. The schools are certainly more book based, but is that any better. Perhaps the best example for a Brit considering such a move is that the English teachers in France can barely speak English because of their own schooling ie it’s largely bookwork rather than the conversationa

I was all set to do a post today about my wonderful neighbor V and A who have been helping so much during these past few weeks. I know V and A visit here occasionally, so apologies. I’ll do a post on you guys next week. Rage before praise.Which brings me to the point of this post. Be warned, there is a rant coming up. And while I am at it, screw objectivity. Whoa. This is oddly liberating. As I was pulling into my work campus, I tuned to BBC World to know what’s going on with the world, but mostly to just amaze the security by not listening to loud hard rock for once, I caught a half-sentence. Something about Gore and the IPCC being awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. This was as expected as Chip throwing a nuclear tantrum at the grocery store I suppose; with Gore’s film winning the Oscar and everything, and Climate Change the hot button topic of the century, but one, well, hopes against hope.I don’t know what tortures me more. The fact that the guy who once claimed to hav
Everyone is talking about global warming, let’s start to do something in our daily life to save our environment from the impact of global warming.
Here are the 3 simple tips everyone can do to make your working life greener!
Use your own mug or cup. Do not use paper cup. Use your own cup even there are paper cups provided beside the water dispenser machine. The main purpose of paper cups is for visitors or vendors only.
Shut down your computer before you go back from work. Saves electricity and saves $$$ for your company as well.
Only print out when it’s necessary. If printing is required, use duplex printer for double-sided printing is possible. Use recycle paper for not important documents.
Volkswagen wants American drivers to know about diesels. Especially its clean diesels and how they can help the environment.
To spread the word, VW begins its Dieselution Tour today, pulling an educational trailer around the country and setting up shop at environmental events. Inside, computer screens and displays showcase the benefits of diesels and ask visitors to take a “sustainability quiz” or measure their car’s carbon footprint.
The message is far from subtle: Clean diesels can help the environment and save you money.
“We want to show Americans that today’s clean diesel technology is a quantum leap from the powerplants introduced nearly 30 years ago,” said Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen of America.

Some companies have considered the implementation of new green standards as something that may hinder sales and operations but not Royal Philips Electronics.
In fact, the popular electronics and gadget manufacturing giant has been upbeat on potential new earnings and revenue once it settles down its green-compliant products by 2012.
Philips’ fourth EcoVision program also aims to increase the energy efficiency of its operations by 25% and double its investment in green innovations to EUR1 billion in the next five years.
Philips said that these targets mean that by the end of 2008 all the company’s offices will be outfitted with energy efficient lighting systems and that further reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions will be realized in production and distribution.

With faster train services, it's never been easier to reach a French farmhouse or Spanish villa without flying or driving, writes Zoe Dare Hall. "In the past two years, I've seen a massive increase in people choosing trains because of eco-concerns," says Mark Smith, who runs www.seat61.com, a guide to train routes and fares. "You'd think that people would mainly be pootling to France and Belgium but for a long time Italy was the most popular destination, followed by Spain then France," he adds.
If people are getting wiser today with their choice of goods to buy, the same should be instilled if companies are to maintain their competitive edge. No longer is it a matter of relying on the brand name for competency but rather also looking into the composition of raw materials and resource used towards producing a final product for consumer purchase.
People have become health conscious and this does not entirely focus on the environment they are living. The usual basic necessities and needs have become the center of controversy for various groups hence, the need to buy wisely is now certainly emphasized.
Consumers will not be as flexible when it comes to purchasing commodities and products. It all boils down towards knowing what to purchase and what they can get out of it. Organizations need to adhere towards green standards. Otherwise, they may end up folding operations due to lack of reliability as far as benefits are concerned.

The Internet doesn't produce belching smokestacks or toxin-spewing drainpipes. Instead, the environmental impact of the data centers that power the Web and private networks is about as visible as the electrons moving around a company's servers. But visible or not, the ecological and economic costs of those servers are massive. A report released last week by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that U.S. data centers (collections of computers used to power businesses' and government agencies' IT infrastructures and Web sites) consumed around 61 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006 at a cost of about $4.5 billion. That's about 1.5% of total U.S. electricity consumption, more than the electricity used by American televisions, or equivalent to the output of about 15 typical power plants. As the Internet expands and data centers multiply, networking hardware is only getting more power-hungry. U.S. server energy consumption is more than twice what it was in 2000, the EPA's report says
Solar cells currently available require direct sunlight to operate efficiently. They are also way too expensive for home-owners and they require a lot energy to manufacture. A new technology being developed could solve this:Dr Wayne Campbell and researchers at Massey University's Nanomaterials Research Centre in New Zealand have developed a range of colored dyes for use in dye-sensitized solar cells. The synthetic dyes are made from simple organic compounds closely related to those found in nature. The dyes being tested are based on compounds like synthetic chlorophyll and haemoglobin. The cells being developed operate efficiently in low-light conditions – making them ideal for cloudy weather. The dyes could be impregnated in roofs, walls, window glass and eventually even clothing to produce power. Wonderful possibilities. The cells are made from titanium dioxide – a plentiful, renewable and non-toxic white mineral use

Traditionally folk festivals are regarded as being green, but this weekend at the Edmonton Folk Festival, the organisers intend to be going even greener and they have really great ways of doing this.
The first thing is the introduction of solar panels, these are to be set up around the main retail tent area, which will be enough to power those all important cash registers and other electrical items, this idea to produce as much solar power possible.
Also if there is one thing that all festivals have an abundance of, that is empty beer cups that just linger around for days, these are now going to be eco friendly, because they are made from cornstarch, which will decompose in only a matter of months.

Save the Earth - drive a car!Under the category of news that will almost certainly not get the coverage it deserves, environmentalist Chris Goodall writes in the Times that 'eating less and driving to save energy would be better'. He's calculated that food production is now so energy-intensive that more carbon is emitted providing a person with enough calories to walk to the shops than a car would emit over the same distance. Blimey. The article also mentions that Britain's rail safety and standards board recently admitted that catching a diesel train is now twice as polluting as travelling by car for an average family. You can be even friendlier to the environment by making sure you're driving in a fuel-efficient manner - this interesting piece on 4Car reveals how improper driving behaviour can hugely increase a car's fuel consumption and negate the advantage of having bought a more fuel-efficient car in the first place. Just be careful - that downhill coasting sounds a bit hair
Some green tips that we can practice daily (from GreenPeace), let’s see have many of it I’m practising…
Water1.Fix any leaky water pipes. Even a small drip can add up to a lot of water over time. (It saves our water bill as well)2.Wash your car the natural way – wait till it rains. (This is what i practice normally, the main reason is I’m too lazy to wash my car. But who knows that it actually saved water in the natural way…)
Energy1.Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. (This is what i do and i keep on mentioning this on this blog as well)2.Avoid using cars – walk, cycle or use public transportation whenever possible. (As i mentioned in my previous post on 5 simplest ways to reduce Global Warming, plan your journey ahead will also help to save energy.)3.Avoid anything battery operated (or use rechargeable or solar rechargeable if batteries are unavoidable). (I think AA and AAA batteries are the most widely use in our household, rechargeable

The government of Nova Scotia is finally aligning with the largest environmental non-profit in the province, The Ecology Action Centre, in an effort to combat climate change. The Ecology Acton Centre is supporting the government’s greenhouse gas targets of reducing gas emissions to 10% below 1990 levels by 2020 and their plan to have at least 18.5% of the province’s energy being produced by renewable resources by 2013.
Co-operation is key to creating successful green initiatives, and this collaboration should be successful! I at lest hope it will be!

As many of you know, Bahrain was once known as the “island of a million palm trees”. Unfortunately, that’s history now and what we have today is a concrete jungle instead. If you look at an aerial picture of Bahrain, you easily notice how yellow the place is as opposed to say Abu Dhabi, which you wouldn’t even think is a desert.
For a while, at least for the government, a garden meant having a few swings, maybe a basketball court, a café, few trees and plants here and there and loads of brick. Even the walkways weren’t green enough. The word green must have not been in their dictionary. I think the general complaint was that it’s too expensive to maintain those gardens, yet, you look at other cities and notice that they use sewage water instead and thrive in keeping their cities green.
I remember last summer, there were some serious talks about making the country a greener place, etc. and that this initiative would start with planting more trees here and there and with t
Warren McLaren has written an extensive article on TreeHugger on how to green your outdoor sports.
Although this is not a gadget I highly recommend reading the article for two reasons:

It is apparent that most people would find it hard to give up their comfortable means of moving from one place to another. Hence, what people can do is to perhaps do the next best thing, maintain it properly.
Cars need the proper maintenance to be able to perform properly for the environment and personal safety. Oil checks and tire pressures are important aspects since they all lead up to the emitting pollution coming from the car engines of a car. The smoke emitted is the main cause for alarm of air pollution, burned fuel that contributes to polluted atmospheres.
Check out the video to get a thing or tow on how to properly maintain your car.

The Vans Warped Tour has been trying to introduce new eco-initiatives to the tour every year, in hopes of not only becoming a more environmentally-friendly space, but to spread the message of eco-awareness.
The 2007 tour is no different. The Vans Warped Tour Press release states
The tour will continue to implement and develop its “Warped Eco Initiatives” (WEI), including: biodiesel fuel for touring trucks and buses, environmentally friendly catering for bands and crew courtesy of Tada Catering and a solar-powered sound system. In 2007, Warped will also team with Philippe Cousteau’s environmental organization Earth Echo International, which “empowers individuals to take action to sustain and enhance our water planet.” [Tour founder and producer, Kevin] Lyman and the Vans Warped Tour strive to develop multiple ways to help the environment and create awareness through action.

The season of random green things appearing at the tips of every available brown thing out in the yard is finally upon us, mostly noted by the fact that the fiery heat box in the basement hasn’t done one of its typical, “click-click-click-WHOOSH!” things in awhile. The cat is decidedly more calm for the fact.
Of course, things around here have kept me busier than a triple-phallus endowed billygoat, but what else is new? The mere fact that I stay vertical on a regular basis is something to be proud of, I think. Note to self: Gloat to mother figure sometime.
The lawn is growing great guns which means that I will probably be unable to avoid mowing it on the weekend, lest my neighbors form a lynch mob and drag me to the town square. The pretty, round, yellow flowers are peeking their way above the verdant blades, shining happily to the sun. I will certainly have a moment of contrition when I push my way into their domain and violently hack them down

Today I made an effort to cook green. For lunch I made mixed bean burgers (home made) and for dinner I made root vegetables (red beats, sweat potatoes, carrots, root celery, burdock and turnips) baked in the oven. I cheated a little by making a side dish of two fried chicken thighs, in case the kids would refuse the main dish. My wife was very pleased with my new cooking. The kids liked the burgers (and the chicken). Cooking vegetarian food is probably not that hard once you get into it, but I am not planning to go totally vegetarian. A shift of focus rather. In western cooking meat is normally the main object in a meal. In Japanese cooking, which I have become quite familiar with, meat often comes like a side dish. You get a set of bowls with various foods, often you get rice, soup, vegetables (from land or sea) and a sensible portion of fish or meat. In this format meat isn't the main component of the meal, it gets a more peripheral role. I think I will try to adopt this way more of
New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) Disappearing trees, a polluted river and a handful of concerned citizens. Delhi, burning under the scorching summer sun, heralded World Earth Day Sunday, by raising its voice on various issues that are pricking our fragile ecosystem.
“We are on the brink of a challenge,” said Ravi Aggarwal of Toxics Link, an environmental NGO. “The issue of stopping deforestation and felling of trees in the name of development needs to be addressed immediately and a day such as this is a good platform to raise consciousness among the people,” he said.
Sensitisation of people is what Manoj Misra, convenor of the Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan, also believes in.
An initiative to save the Yamuna river from further pollution, the Abhiyan was to take out a candlelight vigil on the banks of the Yamuna later in the day. “Since today is the world earth day, we want to use this as a platform to reach out to the common man as well as to the higher powers,” Misr
The United States Supreme Court ruling on regulating greenhouse gases in an effort to curb global warming is unprecedented news! In a sharply divided judgment, the court ruled Monday that greenhouse gases are pollutants, and so the federal Environmental Protection Agency was wrong to say it had no mandate to regulate such emissions. The decision dealt a new blow to the administration of President George W. Bush, which is steadfast in refusing any limits on US industry or on its gas-guzzling cars, arguing it could hurt the country's economy. So what does this mean for my portfolio? Should I lose my gas/oil stocks? I dunno. That's for you and your financial planner to decide. However, this ruling makes for an interesting situation. For the first time in history, the United States is stepping up to the plate to hedge global warming, which is good for alternative energy stocks! Be on the lookout for FuelTech (FTEK) and Covanta (CVA). FuelTech helps coal power plants save money and emissi
I've had a good few days lately, nothing spectatular, just constant steady profit. I've only been averaging 3 lays a day and I've been in good form. Racing is still pretty quiet but evening racing starts on Friday which is a good sign. The Grand National was a great race, shame about the start, the starter for sure needs a word! Couldn't find the winner but looking back the winner fitted into the stats nicely, not sure why I didn't see it, lol.I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about where I want to be and I think it's Dubai. I like being in the UK but there's something missing and I can't pinpoint it. Perhaps I'll enjoy the UK more when I'm more settled and financially happy. I can't touch my racing bank as I'm trying to build it up, I knew this all before I came but still something doesn't feel right. I think come June I'll be back in Dubai and reassess things from there. It's funny sometimes when you think things will be miles better when they actually aren't.

At first glance, the pro-environmental rulings handed down by the Supreme Court this week seem to bode unfavorably for utility companies as owners of power plants that produce harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. But in fact, the twin decisions could actually give a boost to energy companies that are already betting their future on investment in alternative fuel
After posting the article below and mentioning green cars I decided to take a look and see what I could find. What I found was a top ten list of the greenest vehicles on the road. Top of the charts however was the Honda Civic GX. I had never heard of the Honda Civic GX before so I checked it out. The Honda Civic GX is a natural gas engine car. This car is already available in places like New York and California. They always get the cool stuff first. The price tag is very high however at $24,590 it is a lot to pay for a civic. Then there is the question about fueling The Honda Civic GX. Apparently you can purchase a device called the Phill. It hooks to your existing natural gas line so you can fuel your car. I have very little faith that the average consumer can fill their car in their garage and not blow it to smithereens. But maybe I am cynical. Also while looking at the Civic GX I saw a link to the Honda cars that were at SEMA. Each of those cars were built for performance including a 5

All this talk about peeing reminds me of something — tea! For years I was caffeine free, not counting chocolate (not one square, bar, truffle, cocoa or….) for health and crankiness reasons (Can you believe I used to be MORE cranky? Well, who’s asking you anyway, chump?). Then, the Kid. In crept a little green tea from time to time. With that jolt, I’d scrub the floor with a toothbrush. Towards the end of her napping career (;O), she started waking up earlier, so….more green tea. Now, no naps, and add to that, middle of the night bed-crashing. So, dawn breaks, and I am TIRED. I don’t need tons of sleep, not like some people I married, but ideally a good 8 1/2 hours has me waking with eyelids gliding easily up, rather than the eyeball scraping rough-housing we have now.
Anyway, I am ditching the herbal stuff and coasting through new green teas. Lately, honey ginseng from Celestial Seasonings and Stash chai. I am still hunting for that perf

Bert Dodson in Vermont8" x 10" pencil and coloured pencil in Moleskine sketchbookcopyright Katherine TyrrellWhat's the ultimate challenge? Well my personal artistic 'top ten' has probably got to include doing a quick sketch over lunch of the man who wrote one of the best selling books about drawing - and then trying to colour it afterwards purely from memory! My sketch is of Bert Dodson, the author of "Keys to Drawing". This book, published by North Light Books, is on the shelves of many people keen on learning how to improve their drawing. It's certainly sat on my shelves for nearly 20 years ever since I was able to find time for art again after I finally came to the end of my long haul through post grad qualifications/degrees.When I planned the trip to New England I had no idea that Bert lived in Vermont within a 'day trip' driving distance of Nicole. I knew he had a new book coming out as we had corresponded off and on. Anyway, he emerged from under all the page proofs at
