      Greener than thou.
Tossing an old refrigerator is greener than installing solar panels? You're got to be kidding, right? Solar is green. Solar is cool. Solar is NOW! Refrigerators are like, boring, boring, boring. How can tossing something as retro as my garage beer refrigerator be greener than solar.  Well, if you will bear with me while I haul out some dusty old ideas from economics...<cough, cough, blowing dust away> , I'll try to explain it to you. It's somewhere around here with the slide rules and punch cards...Ah, Here we are, Life Cycle Costing. It's the magic bullet the California Energy Commission uses to explain why they make builders use better insulation levels or use insulated glass in new construction. The principle is that it's unfair to efficient tec

      Greener Grasses, Warmer Sands?
What is it with us Canadians? Do we suffer from ‘the grass is always greener, the sand always warmer’ syndrome? During a -40 snap, you bet we do. And it’s not all bad either.Due to increases in salaries and the great rise in Alberta real estate values have helped make many Albertans quite well off. Our strong dollar and the perceived bargains in the U.S. have brought droves of Realtors and salesmen from South of the border to flog their wares, when we’re feeling at our most vulnerable-bitter winter.Albertans are prime targets.I too admit to a weakness for a house on a palm-treed beach. Actually, I’m lucky to have two palm trees in my garden but their leaves turn brown and fall off during cold spells, far from the beach of my dreams. The number one thing to remember is that Albe

      The grass was greener ...
"High Hopes" Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young In a world of magnets and miracles Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary The ringing of the division bell had begun Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway Do they still meet there by the Cut There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps Running before time took our dreams away Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground To a life consumed by slow decay The grass was greener The light was brighter With friends surrounded The nights of wonder..."High Hopes" is a song from the 1994 Pink Floyd album, The Division Bell, written by David Gilmour and Polly Samson.
