The Revolution rarely enjoys origin stories. And the last issue of Green Lantern was no exception. Johns is giving us the second installment of the “Secret Origin” story with Green Lantern #30. The fact is that most origin stories are a bit boring as the writer rarely gives anything new for long time readers to enjoy. I’m curious to read Johns decides to do much tweaking here and there with Hal’s origin in order to match it up more with what Johns has been doing with the Green Lantern mythos. Ok, now this is just filler. They held out with original material for a while, but the symptoms of a crossover will always, eventually manifest. Plus, there were like, five artists? I had been pleasantly surprised by the last two issues, but now I'm looking forward to the end of the Sinestro Corps war so I can drop this like a bad habit.
Most of Emerald Dawn is really lousy, which is too bad, because the space stuff is fun. The stuff on earth, all the lame Hal Jordan gets drunk, crashes a car with his friends in it, goes to jail--it's beyond terrible. The space stuff isn't exactly well-written. Gerard Jones's dialogue is terrible, whereas Priest's dialogue in the first issue was just bad. But it's space stuff and it's fun and trippy at times. The most interesting part, Hal Jordan's training on Oa is skimmed over. We see his training, but we don't get to see him meet people... He never feels like an Earthman on a fantastic adventure, he just seems like a function of the plot. No depth, no texture, no nothing.Keith Giffen's terrible plot is something special, because who wants to read a comic book about the Hal Jordan presented in Emerald Dawn? He's not just arrogant and stubborn, he's a complete idiot who manages to get through certain things because he's lucky. It's unpleasant to spend time with him.Beside
Here's another item from within my collection I'm going to write about, this one the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2 from 1986, which features a trio of short stories told by 3-4 different writers.The book begins with Steve Englehart's framework story featuring Sinestro in jail on Oa, which at the time was turned into a prison planet where intergalactic criminals could be kept. He's trying to make it seem as if he's got connections to some kind of lord out there, and that by telling some great stories, he can win a get-out-of-jail-free card. All the other convicts on his cell block are mighty annoyed by him, but along he goes and proceeds to tell a couple of short stories about occurances in the history of the GL Corps.We first start with one written by Mindy Newell, about a Han Solo-like soldier of fortune named Penn Maricc hanging out in one of these intergalactic bars who's approached by mysterious figures who ask of him to undertake the daring mission of rescuing an alien princ

When I was walking back home from town today an odd line of reflection occurred to me.When I was in junior school and DC comics were the must-have collectable of the pre-teen boys, my favourite hero was Green Lantern. I collected the Green Lantern comics, and there was just one shop in town that sold them. Sadly I must have got rid of them years and years ago - they'd probably be quite collectable now.It struck me as I walked along how there was a sort of parallel between the Green Lantern vow/oath (each Green Lantern on their respective worlds could choose their own vow) and the Vows of Bodhisattvas within Mahayana Buddhism.It then struck me that my own affinity to Amoghasiddhi was perhaps a continuation of my original attraction to Green Lantern - or perhaps they are both expressions of something that pre-dates them both and which I have yet to remember. Unlike Amida whose vow is famous (and the basis of all Pure Land practice) I don't think Amoghasiddhi is particularly renowned
