So what does it take to be Miss Great Britain? Apparently the standards are pretty damn high. Gemma Garrett looks like a really hot Brit to me. Stinks that I can't tell if she has an accent to go along with it, but I am fairly certain that must be true as well. Plenty more pictures of her below. The most bizarre, most complex crop circle ever to be discovered in Great Britain has been found in a barley field in the town of Wiltshire. The incredibly bizarre formation, which mesaures 150 feet in diameter, is apparently a coded image that represents the first 10 digits of pi (3.141592654).The Telegraph has much more about this incredible story. The much bigger issue is to try to figure out whe
that's the extremely apt title of The Holloways' UK-centric debut album: one which has received seriously bipolar reviews with some critics loving it and others, well... not so much. i definitely fit into the former category and i'm sure you will too once you've heard their memorable third single 'Dancefloor'. give it a listen HERE and let me know what you think.'s rock-a-bility rating: 3 out of
A coordinated attack on British abortion laws failed when Parliament rejected one effort after another to declare abortion a crime. The campaign was pushed by many members of the Catholic Church hierarchy who pleaded for an end to abortion. Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, used the debate on human fertilization and embryology as a lever in [...]

With a few minutes to spare, a brief walk, along part of Embankment, via Trafalgar Square, across the Mall, through St. James Park, across the Mall again at Buckingham Palace to Green Park before arriving at The Park Lane Hotel. To say that the colour/color of the trees was stunning is understating the matter, but what made it more interesting was all the people walking through the parks dressed in their suits/smart work cloths going to work, an interesting contrast to the parks at other times. The top image shows Embankment from the walkway across the Thames near Embankment Underground Station with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament on the skyline (in the middle). The sun had just risen over the buildings on the opposite side of the river and gave the trees an even more red/orange hue than normal. The next image is just outside St. James Park (to the right) and while doing some quick sketches I'd hoped for a nice group of people to come along. They never did, just single people off t

Great Britain is one of the world’s most popular tourism destinations, luring travelers of all budgets and backgrounds, in all seasons.
Unfortunately for the budget traveler, Britain is also one of the world’s most expensive destinations.
The cost of living is considered unreasonably high by many of the British themselves, and when you factor in the exchange rate as well – sterling easily outweighs most other currencies – things can get pricey.
But don’t give up and head for South East Asia just yet. I spent last year studying in a tiny corner of England’s north east, and on weekends and holidays I made it to more than 40 cities, villages, and national parks – all on a student’s budget.
Here are a few pence-pinching tips I picked up along the way.

But an even easier way to save money is to minimize your time there: prices drop substantially in other major cities like N

The World Tour chugs on relentlessly, and this blog might even take you longer to read than Nicole Richie spent in prison! 35 minutes, people. And somehow she still came out with a prison tat and had discovered the teachings of Allah. But anyhoo, the #2 country for Tonegents vistors is the place where the best music is made, if you ask me:Great Britain!Yep, good ol' Blimey, where thank goodness the weather is so shitty, because it keeps all those talented folks cooped up inside their studios pumping out the good tunes. What else do we like about the U.K?1) Monty Python - the funniest shit ever.2) British slang - I don't know why, but I'm completely obsessed with it. Probably because its much more colorful than the friggin' ebonics we toss around in this country.3) British music magazines - they make better music, they have better magazines, and they always have the dope free CDs attached to them. Ever see Spin or Rolling Stone do that? Nope... 'cuz they suck.4) The Summer o
Health officials in Portsmouth, England have disapproved funding for the chemotherapy drug Alimta to treat mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining caused by asbestos exposure. Portsmouth has the sixth highest mesothelioma death rate among men in Great Britain, particularly among former dockyard workers who were exposed to asbestos on the job. Portsmouth health officials' reason for not approving funding of Alimta for mesothelioma patients is their claim that the drug is not effective enough. Mesothelioma patients are urging the health officials to approve Alimta, as the chemotherapy drug has been shown to prolong life expectancy and help to relieve pain and breathing problems. For the full article, go to portsmouthtoday.co.uk.
Jamie Murray and Greg Rusedski did the job on Saturday with a superb win in the doubles - 6-1 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5).Very sad to see Rusedski retiring from tennis, but great to see Jamie Murray showing his ability to play on the big stage. I remember a while back, Andy Murray saying his brother was better at volleying at the net than he was, and I understand why. Jamie has great reflexes and a very useful two-handed back-hand.As I expected, Andy rested on the Sunday and gave Jamie the chance to play a singles in one of the dead rubbers against Haase. Jamie took the first set 6-4, but lost the next two 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.Tim Henman played the other match against Sijsling and won 6-2 6-3.Overall, GB win the tie 4-1 and will play a World Group playoff in September against either Romania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belarus, Austria, Chile or Australia.Rusedski has kept playing in the Davis Cup, even when his ability to play on the tour has diminished. If Henman is willing to do the sa
Murray wins 6-3 7-5 6-2I hadn't realised how unsettling the Djokovic/Murray match had been until I felt the relief at watching Murray back to somewhere near his best.Murray has just taken the first set 6-3 by serving aces, chasing down drop-shots, producing cleverly disguised drop-shots of his own, volleying well at the net and finding some awesome back-hand winners down the line.Murray broke early and raced to a 3-0 lead. Sluiter found a break point at 3-1, but couldn't convert it and Murray served out comfortably.Great start. Some better play from Sluiter in the second set earned him some break points, but Murray was cool under pressure and held his serve. In the 11th game, Murray made the break and then served it out to take the second set 7-5.Credit to Sluiter for contributing to an entertaining match, but when the break came early in the third set, the end result was clear. Sluiter carved out some more break points, but couldn't convert and Murray broke again to take the final
Just in case there was any doubt, recent news reports have confirmed that Murray WAS injured before the Djokovic debacle.Murray was very sporting not to blame this for the result but, considering that only two weeks earlier in Indian Wells, he admitted it was a mistake to have played while injured, he would have looked a bit silly if he'd tried to excuse the performance. With hindsight it's easy to say that playing while injured was a mistake, but the lure of breaking into the top ten is a strong one and at the back of Murray's mind there must always be the thought that... anything could happen.Djokovic could have fallen and broken his ankle on the way out of the dressing room. Djokovic could have choked under the pressure and made the match a close one (remember that set Murray won against Monfils while injured?). More likely though, and of course what actually happened, was that Djokovic would win comfortably. So let's hope Murray breaks into the top ten soon, if for no other rea
Here's portions of an article I found over at edinburghnews.com:Muslims call for school changesISLAMIC leaders have accused schools of failing to respect the wishes of Muslim children when organising sex education, changing rooms and religious assemblies. The Muslim Council of Britain criticised state schools for not taking account of "reasonable requests" from parents and pupils. The MCB urged headteachers to build prayer rooms and individual changing cubicles and avoid scheduling exams during Ramadan.I guess there's one good thing about trying to remove religion from schools in this country; we don't have to put up with this kind of nonsense. If Scotland caves in to this request then they will fall prey to every other belief systems requirements. Teachers have a hard enough job teaching
I've had a few USA bods get in touch yesterday about the Friday Factoid."I had NO IDEA that England wasn't the UK. What's the difference?!?"Well, allow me to explain. The UK is the short version of the "United Kingdom," which is the short version of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."The UK consists of four countries: England; Wales; Scotland; and Northern Ireland. In other words, all of the red bits on this map:(Image courtesy David Liuzzo.) Now, the biggest red island on that picture is called Great Britain. Yes, Great Britain is the name of the island itself, not the name of a country. Great Britain is split into three parts: England, which covers most of it; Scotland, which is situated at the top, the "head" of the UK; and Wales, which is off in the west "hip." London is the capital of England, which is in the south. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and Edinburgh (pronounced "Ed-in-brer") is the capital of Scotland. I live in the right "shoulder" - the n
Paul Weston, A reader at Gates of Vienna, writes a great note. I think that the same things are happening here in America. More people care more about who wins American Idol than us winning the war against the Islamists...
Google was the best-known brand in Great Britain in 2006, although it only spent EUR 2 million on advertising, a survey carried out by consultancy company Millward Brown indicates.
2006 was the first year when Google was included in the Millward Brown classification since 1998. The world’s most popular search engine has risen to the first place in the Great Britain top of brands; the position Google occupied comes counter to the connection Millward Brown usually set between the brands’ advertising expenses and the position in the top. Most of the EUR 2 million Google allocated to advertising last year went to online advertising, according to Nielsen Media Research data.
The second place in the top went to Microsoft, with EUR 59.6 million advertising budget; the next places went to McDonald’s (EUR 48.6 million), Nokia (EUR 26 million, the former first place in 2005) and Tesco. The remaining positions in the top ten went to Coca-Cola, Colgate, Nescaf, Ford and Vodafo
