Help stop this legislation! Hidden deep in the Senate housing legislation is a sweeping provision inserted by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) that affects the privacy and operation of nearly all of America’s small businesses. There is a good chance that we can still stop this, but not without everyone’s help. read more | digg story
On May 23, 2008, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Charles Grassley issued a Press Release announcing the Prepare for Launch: Health Reform Summit 2008 (Summit) for Senators and Representatives to discuss options for health care reform in 2009. The Summit will be held at the Library of Congress on June 16, 2008 and be part of a year long series of Senate Finance Commi

The Senate Finance Committee's top Republican said late last week that he has directed his staff to probe the actions of Bear Stearns executives.
Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said he is concerned that insiders and senior executives may benefit from the fire sale of the company to JP Morgan Chase over the weekend leading up to March 17.
In a statement, Grassley said he is specifically curious about how company executives would have fared if the company had filed for bankruptcy.
'I'm not arguing with the marketplace, but I'm going to argue with people who have insight and take advantage of it,' Grassley said in an interview on Fox Business Network.
When asked about comments from top Bear Stearns executives that the company was liquid just days before th
From MarinaWASHINGTON – Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Committee on Finance, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member, have written to four ministries to urge cooperation with an earlier information request from Grassley. Baucus and Grassley lead the committee with exclusive Senate jurisdiction over tax policy; the ministry inquiry that Grassley launched last November is meant to gauge the effectiveness of certain tax-exempt policies."This ought to clear up any misunderstanding about our interest and the committee’s role," Grassley said. "We have an obligation to oversee how the tax laws are working for both tax-exempt organizations and taxpayers. Just like with reviews of other tax-exempt organizations in recent years, I look forward to the cooperation of these ministries in the week

"For several years, I have been working with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate misuse of government credit cards. We have found shockingly flagrant abuses like $2,443 in taxpayers' money going to pay for a down payment on a sapphire ring at a place called E-Z Pawn and $1,935 in taxpayers' money used to purchase two LA-Z-Boy reclining rocking chairs. Government travel cards have been used to pay for everything from women's lingerie from Frederick's of Hollywood...to a seven night Alaskan cruise for two. There are even examples of charges at so called 'gentleman's clubs'' like Cheetah's Lounge and Déja 2 Vu Showgirls. In each report it has issued, the GAO has made recommendations about what kind of controls need to be implemented to prevent such abuses from occurring in the future."--March 7, 2007.
Now these are very simple, straightforward recommendations. Stuff they teach in Accounting 101. First of all, E-Z Pawn is off limits. No "ifs," "ands," or "buts." That goes for Park n' Pawn, Pawn by Leroy, Le Pawn Brothers, Pimp My Pawn, LA-Z-Pawn, Pawn N' Get It, Secret Al Quida Headquarters & Pawn, and, need I add, The House of Crap is totally verboten. The real transgressions, I mean the ones you just can't justify, I don't care how drunk you were...are the 'gentleman's clubs.' The GAO makes it real clear--right here in the regs: "It is a fraudulent, improper and abusive use of government credit cards to pay for a meatball sub served by a woman wearing nothing but a HI, I'M FLO name badge." Couldn't be clearer. Ditto 'Alaskan cruises.' Now, look. You can have your fun. A 'Twilight Cruise of Guantanamo Bay for Two CIA Interrogators And Guest?" No prob. You've earned it. But be reasonable, that's all we're saying. Frederick's of Hollywood--no good. Staples--fine. L
"Since that tax relief was enacted in 2001 and 2003...we have heard from the liberal establishment in Washington and elsewhere that this bipartisan tax relief must be ended and that taxes should be increased on millions of Americans of all income levels..Of course, it's been the history of tax increases that they tend not to bring in as much revenue as originally predicted. President Rodham Clinton or President Obama or President Edwards would likely find the same budgetary disappointment--and then have to explain to an angry American public during the 2012 election season why their president decided to plunge the economy into a recession."--March 2, 2007.
Dear Mr. Mulally, Mr. Wagoner and Mr. Nardelli:
I understand that your company has been lobbying the Department of Treasury and congressional leaders for additional financial assistance via loans or through inclusion in the Troubled Asset Relief Program. While I understand the economic turmoil that many American businesses face today, I think it’s appropriate to ask [...]
