I was introduced to a nice online game at www.ikariam.com which is a time-based strategy game which is very graphical. Normally online web-based games are text based with lots of figures and texts but very little picture. ikariam is very different; not only is it very graphical, there's quite a lot of things you can do in the game. You'll have to determine how much gold or wood you want. Then, you'll have to decide what to research and how much to spend on research. It's really an interesting strategy game as you try different configuration to achieve maximum growth in the fastest time.Once you are ready, you'll be able to attack other online users to pillage their resources and grow even quicker. Some intrepid soul has stepped through that new MGS4 trailer and the old trailer and put together a very nice comparison of the two.
The graphical improvements appear to be huge and the level of detail has been ramped up incredibly.

These high-definition graphics could make many PC’s cry and if the game engine was used on the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360 they would easily handle its power.

Once I’ve got several HQM1286404 graphical LCD displays around so I decided to build a prototyping board where I could easily plug LCD to it, read data via ADC and display graphs, plug keypad if needed for some menu functions. Earlier I was testing graphical LCD on prototype breadboard, but dealing with multiple wires (GLCD needs 20 of them) resulted in many failures. It is OK to do simple tasks, but more serious applications require more stable platform. So here it is:
This type of GLCD is standard 128×64 pixel matrix controlled by KS0108 LCD controller. Ones I have comes with smaller non common pin-header where pins have 2mm step, so I had to draw it for Eagle library which you will find in project files. I decided to make very simple circuit so it could fit in 100×50mm single sided PCB. As base MCU I used Atmega16 which can be replaced with Atmega32 which is pin compatible with Atmega16 just have more data memory.

If your running Ubuntu Server Edition you can install a KDE or Gnome graphical desktop with a couple of apt installation. For a bare minimal install, you will be able to login to a full desktop with one of the following:
sudo apt-get install gnome-core
sudo apt-get install kde-core
For a baseline set of package you can install the following:
sudo apt-get install gnome
sudo apt-get install kde
For the entire package set released with either Kubuntu or Ubuntu you can install:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-dekstop
These commands will install all the files associated with the default graphical desktop that comes with either Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
So, what can be done is a Ubuntu server installation, and if need be, you can install the graphical environment. Overall I do like installing the core packages, so that once I get the desktop running, I can install specifically the package that I use. Today it is very popular to use various circuit and microcontroller simulators when developing programs. Using simulators you have several benefits comparing to real prototype boards like you don’t have to connect any hardware to test a piece of code, you don’t have to be in same place when working – you can have simulator software in Laptop and work where ever you want and of course you can see more parameters within simulator like register values, memory, signals in convenient form.
So controlling graphical LCD on simulator software like Proteus is easy task.
Working with simulator is easier because you don’t have to wary much about additional pins, like MCU power pins, crystals or other protection circuits. You just need to connect control lines and LCD power pins. Thats it. Define microcontroller Clock frequency in Atmega8 symbol and load program file(.hex) by browsing to it in same component meny. HQM1286404 is pretty old graphical LCD module but it is still popular. This LCD is controlled by KS0108 lcd controller via two segment drivers. LCD backlight color is yellow-green. I think this is good choice for many projects where graphical information needed because of several reasons – you can find libraries around the internet to start working in just a few minutes, also there are several tools that can be used to generate character arrays and graphics.
Hardest thing for me was to find correct wiring as datasheet I have was for next PCB revision (HQM1286405) as mine are HQM1286404 so done be mistaken as I did. Here is the correct pin-out of LCD:

13 CS1

This is another great graphical multiplication trick and extra to this trick (also a graphical multiplication by drawing lines and circles). This this is simpler, and it involves just lines.
This trick actually transforms a multiplication into addition through the drawing of a stool. It works with any numbers if you keep the right partition.
