The grandson writes… I hope this will again confirm that the most important information in [...]

      Bubba's Grandpa's House Round 2
I made it back to my friends Bubba's grandpa's house to get more pictures. This trip scored me a new Cym. orchid, 6 different bromeliads, clippings of a vanilla plant, garlic vine, hoya, and a chinese hat vine. I will post pictures of these new clippings in a future post. Tonight I am trying a few slide shows. If you click on the picture it will give you the big picture, but you have to allow pop-ups from this site. These are more pictures of his yard. Many different bromeliads in bloom, the floss silk tree and the encyclia hamburyii that is growing on it. And many others. This one is a slide show of the Green House. So many different plants and orchids. Everywhere you look there is something else. Orchids mounted on shells, coconuts, slabs, and anything else he could get an orchid to attac

      Bubba's Grandpa's House
Let me start with how my fried Bubba has been talking about his Grandpa's house for weeks now. Telling me how he has a green house full of orchids. Well I have been telling him for weeks now LETS GO! Yesterday it happened. We pulled up around 5:30 and I began looking at everything. It starts with a nice croton collection across the front of the house like a hedge, but no 2 are alike. Then there is island after island of different bromeliads. I have no idea what the names of each one is but I have lots of different pictures of these. I do know that in 1 shot it has a variegated pineapple and a clump of pandanus's. Ground orchids growing out of control. Palm trees galore a 3 year old Bismarck in the corner, a nice size trimmed phoniex relinada, a huge cluster of lady palms, 10 chinese fan pa

Patriotic Grandpa, 78, Falsely Arrested For Assaulting Cop
You'd hope we all have the freedom to demonstrate peacefully and say what we believe as long as we don't impose any impediment, any danger to anyone's safety. Including our own. This man posed no threat, meant no harm, and a friendly gesture is not an assault. Insane overreaction by the cops, who ought to be ashamed of themselves.

      Grandpa and Zoey 101
Grandpa had eye surgery on Monday. He's doing great - recovering spectacularly I hear and somehow he's managed to garner 20/20 vision out of the deal. Probably well worth a $15 copay. That said we gave him a call last night. Both kids did the customary Hi, How are you, How is your eye, I love you, bye....conversation on the phone. I kind of half-hearted fussed at them about it, but kids and the phone never mix well. This morning, Demetrius asked me if Grandpa was better today before he sauntered off to school (between barely eating of the breakfast and the brushing of the teeth). I said I didn't know, but I bet he is. Demetrius: That's good. I can still get my presents. Somehow he's connected his presents to Grandpa's eye surgery. Whew, glad it went well for Grandpa! Do you think that he'll get more presents now that Grandpa's vision is better? ----- So we don't watch alot of Zoey 101 on Nickelodeon, its a few years above Maya (I think) and she, as every other elementar

      A Letter From Grandpa
I got home yesterday to find a letter from my grandpa had arrived. I was thrilled. We live in an age when hand written communication is going by the wayside. We call, we fax, we e-mail, we instant message, and we text message. We hardly ever sit down and actually write out, in longhand, what we want to say… and then to follow that up with taking the time to put it in an envelope, address it, put a stamp on it, and mail it. Unheard of. So grandpa… thanks. I loved getting a letter from you. And, I had no trouble reading it either, as you had imagined I might. In fact, I read it aloud to Karen as she made dinner last night. It was fantastic. Getting the letter made me think about my grandfather… and there’s so much I could say about him. Like, I wonder if he knows he’s the axis at the center of things in our family. I wonder if he realizes he’s where we all get our incredible sense of what’s right, our wonderful sense of play, and our good hear

      Evesdropping on Grandpa
Someone recently forwarded me an email in which my dad had the following things to say about Asher. Its too cute not to share, so this is my dad's unintentional first time as a guest blogger.Of course all this activity is just what we use to fill the time until we get to spend time with our grandson, and of course his parents. The next two nights we were able to babysit. What a joy! Of course I am not claiming I do most of the work. But Catherine doesn't charge me too much to babysit, but between just us I would pay a lot more if I had too. Asher walks around everything and will take a few steps walking alone but his favorite mode is crawling. As luck would have it so is it mine, so of course we have a great time. But one of us keeps having his leg slide off, which creates a slight problem. Asher is quite perplexed by that contraption. One of his favorite activities is to be carried by Grandma or Grandpa and point to just about everything and grunt, which of course we know

To hand him his hermonica. To work with him in the garden for hours learning everything I could about everythign he loved. I want to smell his shaved face and see his kind eyed. I miss him. So much. I tried to carry with me in life, almost like my own What Would Grandpa Do? Because I choose a man my Grandfather would have Loved, I am now the happiest of wives. Grandpa's coming...
I talk to my dad fairly regularly on MSN messenger. We didn't get along great during my teen years, but since we've both gotten older and since I moved thousands of miles away, we get along OK now. He really dotes on Elliot. He loves looking at his photos and he's always buying clothes and books for him. My dad pesters me constantly to update Elliot's (private) blog more often and loves hearing all the new little anecdotes. He's visited a few times to see Elliot. Once just after he was born, once again for Elliot's first birthday. He told me last night, he's flying in for Elliot's second birthday as well and staying for about three weeks. Usually when I hear that parents are coming for a visit, it usually means nights out with a free babysitter.. but not with my dad. Last time he was here, he didn't change a single nappy, he never once gave Elliot his bottle. And even though Elliot and his grandpa get on famously, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my dad as a baby

Even Miss Dutton had not been to France and Italy! I had taken my whole collection of cards and was proudly showing them off, during lunch. Sure enough Miss Flynn zeroed in after a while and started flipping through the cards, no doubt very impressed. As she was in the act, all hell broke loose. She was red in the face and threw my entire collection on the floor. I just couldn’t make out what had got hold of her. Then she picked up one card from the floor and thrusting it towards me shouted,” How dare you bring this to school!” I was in total daze. Then through my watery eyes, I could make out that she was holding a picture of Swami Vivekananda, which also my Dad had sent me. Possessing pictures of

Often, during the class our peon Kanhai would come and softly say something to Miss Flynn. Her face would light up and she would go running out. When it started happening too often, then one more boy and I would follow her at a safe distance. The others would dutifully stay in the class. We soon discovered that a young man in uniform used to come to meet her. They used to position themselves in a corner, in the sprawling mansion. Obviously they were enjoying each other’s company. Often he would hold her tight. I could not understand why he was doing that to such a nice person. Once we saw them bringing their lips together, and we still could not make anything of this strange ritual. Then one day, he was feeling her all over, and she seemed to be in ecstasy. They were reluctant to part but abrup

Teaching Grandma to Blog (and Grandpa too)
My mother in law got a loptop! I couldn't believe what I heard when I first heard it. For many years, she was very resistant about computers and was adamant that she didn't want to try using a computer. I suppose she changed her mind.I told my husband the other day that if only I have the time, I want to initiate a part-time job teaching grandparents how to e-mail and blog. I think that's a cool part-time job! It would be so rewarding and fulfilling - teaching the grandmas and grandpas to use e-mail and to blog in order for them to stay in touch with their families, especially grandkids. It's also the best way to use their mind, and meet other seniors from all over the Unites States and from around the world. So, if you're a blogger SAHM who's looking for income, why not put an ad in the paper out teachng seniors how to e-mail and blog.Oh I really would like to fly over to Connecticut to teach my mother in law how to blog. Yoink! Grandpa Nixes Paris Hilton’s $60M Inheritance
Ho-tel heiress Paris Hilton is out $60 million after her billionaire grandfather - appalled by years of disgusting actions and Paris’ recent jail term - has nixed her inheritance. Barron Hilton was already embarrassed by her wild behavior - notably when the Paris Hilton sex tape was leaked online - but her 23-day jail stint was the last straw. “He was, and is, extremely embarrassed by how the family name has been sullied by Paris Hilton,” says Jerry Oppenheimer, who wrote a biography of the clan called House Of Hilton. “He now doesn’t want to leave unearned wealth to his family.” The lesson here? A billionaire grandparent can only be subjected to so much Paris Hilton pussy before deciding there are far better uses for his personal fortune. Paris Hilton: “Bye, bye, $60 million!“ Barron Hilton, 79, senior, is the only member of the family left with a sizeable stake in the huge hotel chain. He has let it be known that he intends to donate to charity the $2.4 billion he

Mad Squirrel Goes On Rampage Attacking People Before Killed By Grandpa's Cane
GERMANY - A mad squirrel went on a rampage and attacked and injured three people before a 72-year-old granny smacked it into submission with her cane. The squirrel first entered a home in Passau, a small town in southern Germany and jumped up on an unsuspecting 70-year-old woman and sank it's teeth into her hand, a local police spokesperson said. The terrorized elderly woman ran into the street with the squirrel still attached to her hand, a local police spokesman said Thursday. After that the squirrel apparently ran into a building site and attacked a construction worker who was bitten in the hand and arm. The worker managed to fight off the mad squirrel with a measuring pole. Police say the squirrel then entered "the 72-year-old man's garden and massively attacked him on the arms, hand and thigh," the spokesman said. "Then he killed it with his [cane]."Experts theorize the squirrel was ill (do you think?) or that his aggressive behavior was due to the mating season.

With Love and Bullets from Grandpa
Guns & Babies, originally uploaded by Declan!.My grandfather was a very giving person. My favorite memory with him were at family gatherings. He used to go into his room, dump out a pound or so of pennies and nickels into a lunch-sized paper bag, and ask all of the very young kids of the family to gather in the large front room. He would then take a handful of change and send it skyward, at which point the parents would laugh themselves silly watching the kids scramble for loose change. A bit sadistic? Maybe, but I always managed to make a profit.Yet, for all his generosity, my grandfather never got around to buying any of his infant grandkids a 12-gauge Beretta and a gun ownership card. Why does a 10-month-old need a FOID card? Blame Grandpa.'How old is the boy?'Within weeks after Bubba's birth, my father called with news. "I bought him a gun," he said."What?" Alleke and Grandparents Photo by kellyandapril. "I can babysit," my dad said. April stopped reading the paper and looked up at me. I glanced from her to my mom who was standing in front of the open refrigerator, milk in hand, staring at the two of us. We all looked back at dad. "You'd have to change her diaper" April said.Dad guffawed and looked at mom.See, my dad doesn't do diapers. He spends lots of time with his grandchildren, and he loves them. But my dad is not a mechanic. When a little one spits up or smells funny or begins to cry, dad hands baby off to grandma for a tune up. Until today, that is. "I can change a diaper," Dad said, shrugging his shoulders. I smiled. Grandma and Grandpa's House
My grandparents left Washington state in 1949 and moved as far as their money would take them: Alaska. Anchorage was in its infancy and was little more than a tent city; they lived in a one-room log house until Grandpa, a self-employed contractor, could build them the house which the city eventually grew up around, the same house that they live in today. In the basement is a two-room apartment where my parents lived while they were home between college semesters. One summer my mother gave birth and that little basement became my first home. Later Grandpa built a four-plex on a third of the property for retirement income and it was successful enough that he built another apartment building with six units on the remaining third next to his immaculately organized wood shop. When my parents were ready to settle permanently in Anchorage they lived in one of those apartments while they saved money for a house and when Andrew and I came back to Anchorage ten years ago we lived in the same apa

I'm Sorry to Break the News to You, But Bob Barker is Way Cooler than Your Grandpa
Now that I've waxed nostalgic on Bob Barker and his impending retirement, it's time for me to note how he is undeniably the coolest 82 year old man on the planet. First off, he gets some heat for dumping some of his Beauties after they got a bit high in the age department (seriously, Janice Pennington was a Barker's Beauty from 1972 to 2000. 28 YEARS! Didn't her wrists get tired from showing all the great prizes with appropriate flair and spunk?) and replacing them with some foxy new meat. Secondly, when Bob was asked by Entertainment Weekly what his most memorable moment in his 35 years of hosting The Price is Right, this was his answer: He said the most memorable moment on the show was when a young female contestant's tube top slipped when she jumped up and down with excitement, exposing both breasts. Yes, in 35 years of producing daily, 2 hour episodes of The Price is Right, Bob Barker's favorite memory is when he got to catch some freebie boobage. Finally, Bob Barker wi
