After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"

Obama: My grandma's a 'typical white person'

      A Home for Grandma
When you have a senior parent, the concern for their ability to maintain their lifestyle can be a significant worry. Almost without exception, senior citizens resist the idea of moving out of their house and into an assisted living facility or nursing home. You as a child of a senior citizen may see issues of safety if your aging parent continues to live independently. If their spouse has passed on, there may be issues of loneliness and depression. Hallways and doors of old homes are often not built to accommodate walkers or wheelchairs. And the vision of your children's Grandma or Grandpa falling and being unable to reach you for help is frightening. And then there is the financial side of maintaining their home and paying the mortgage if it is still active. So the question is whether you

      When Grandma Goes To Court
Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know me?' She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.'The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know the def

Is Grandma Coming to Live with Us?
As more baby boomers retire there are going to be some parents that are not going to be in the position of just being able to make it. Starting late with 401k's, higher then expected health costs and frankly, longer life will add to this phenomenon. This is the flip side of the coin of kids waiting longer to leave. We may end up living with our parents, between homes over half out life! If you are not the Grandma of my kids, you may go on your merry way because I am just using my blog as my refrigerator door for those who live 1,700 miles away. Mom, if you were here, you would have this crammed in your face only minutes after your arrival. Of course, if you are not my Mom you can go ahead and read on anyways, as long as you can stand a wee bit of motherly pride. I love poetry. I like reading it and I like writing it when I am so inspired. Yesterday the boys and I sat down and read a selection from The New Oxford Book of Children's Verse. First, let me say that I had completely forgotten that The Highway Man included a suicide. Oops. Didn't remember that at all. But I think the excitement of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere maybe made up, in the minds of my children, for the nameless dead guy on the highway who made the very unfortunate wardrobe choice of lace at his throat. I hope so anyways. I think we'll save anymore of Alfred Noyes for Jr. High Lit. (

She has a tendency to secretly spoil me, which is why she gave me one of my presents now instead of on Christmas--so none of the other grandkids would get mad. My Grandma and I have always had the exact same taste when it comes to fashion, that's why I wasn't suprised when she gave me this Sigrid Olsen "Venice" Soft Hobo Bag in black. It's a roomy hobo with the softest leather exterior that I have ever felt! The bag might be a little on the expensive side at $188, but it will definitely last me for many years. I think I'd written about this before, but for some reason I was reminded of it again. Maybe it's because Thanksgiving is coming up and I got thinking about family. I'm not sure.If there's one thing I'll ever truly regret in my life, it's that I didn't go to my great grandma's birthday party last fall. I don't remember why I didn't go. I think I had to work, or something else was going on. Anyway, that would've been my last chance to see her before she died. Sure, she was like 96 years old so it was about that time, but I still regret it. Not everyone is as lucky as I was to know their great grandmother. What always tears me up, though, is thinking about that letter I sent her while I was in Japan. I remember my mom had told me she had fallen ill, so I wrote her a letter to cheer her up. When she had to go into the nursing home near the end of her life, that letter was one of the few things she brought with her. After she died, it was given back to me. I have it in my room ba

Most of the plants sold today as "Christmas Cactus" are actually not the true Christmas cactus. These are not your grandma's Christmas cactus. The Schlumbergera truncata cultivars being sold today as "Christmas Cactus" are actually the plant commonly referred to as "Thanksgiving Cactus." The real Christmas cactus is Schlumbergera x. buckleyi and is a cross between S. russelliana and S. truncata. The plant was produced by William Buckley at the Rollisson Nurseries in England. Why are two different plants going by the same common name? The reason that Schlumbergera truncata is going by "Christmas Cactus" today instead of "Thanksgiving Cactus" is because of money. How Grandma's Lap Robe Saved My Legs
By: Duane ShinnWe lived almost exactly one mile from the heart of Auburn California on Palm Avenue between the old Highway 49 and the new, broader Highway 49; the highway that connects Auburn with Grass Valley, both towns formed during the Gold Rush of 1849. The city limit line ran right down the center of Palm Avenue, so we lived just a few feet inside the "city"; really a town of about 3000. Palm tress, unusual in Auburn, used to line our road, but through the years some fell, some were cut down by progress, and now they were scattered; one here, then a quarter mile, then a cluster of a half-dozen, then more for a space. As a small child I used to imagine that Palm trees were giant one-legged ostriches, now petrified, like ancient prehistoric birds. The house I grew up in was built the year before I was born for thirty five hundred dollars. It sat on the northeast corner of my Grandfather Eisleys' property, a ten acre segment now occupied mostly by my Uncle Henry's nursery, aptly na

I really appreciate your kindness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Does anyone have any invites available for BlogAds (different from BlogHer Ads) that they’d like to graciously offer me? Aloha to Grandma
My Grandmother passed away Sunday evening. She was 95 years old. I keep writing and re-writing this post but the bottom line is . . . I wish I had spent more time with her. I wish I would have made more of an effort to see her, to have my kids get to know her better, but daily life just got in the way. And now it’s too late. Why is it that it takes something tragic to happen before we realize what we should have been doing all along? Whatever you’re doing right now, stop and take a moment to appreciate your loved ones. Call someone you’ve been meaning to. Give your children and spouses a hug. Tell someone you love them. Make the most of every day. A hui hou Grandma.

Say a Little Prayer for Grandma K
My Grandma K is home resting today from a car accident yesterday. For those of you who know her, you know that she does nothing slow or without gusto. She was on her way to mail her triplet great-grandbabies' birthday cards and didn't negotiate a stop sign in her favor. (Is that a polite enough way to say that she ran a stop sign?) Actually, she doesn't remember if she stopped and didn't see the oncoming car that hit her or if she rolled through without stopping.Regardless of what happened she's really sore. Thankfully, there are no broken bones. According to my mother, she looks like a truck hit her in the face. She has bruised ribs, a slight concussion, and a pretty big goose-egg on her head witch turned into 2 black eyes this morning. Please say a prayer that she will heal quickly.

Honor Killing Sends Grandma To Jail
A 70 year old grandmother in England was sentenced to a 20 year term in jail for ordering the murder of her daughter-in-law who she claimed had been guilty of adultery. Bachan Athwai arranged for her brother to strangle Surjit Athwai and then dump her body in a river. Ms. Athwai was on a trip back to India with her mother-in-law when she mysteriously disappeared. Her children were told she had run away with a man and all traces of her existence whether pictures of writing were destroyed. The judge told the murderers, “The pair of you decided that the so-called honour of your family members was worth more than the life of this young woman.” The judge is correct, it is “so-called honour” which impels people to brutalize or murder someone who they claim has violated some aspect of family or religious traditions. In this case, Ms. Athwai was murdered because she apparently had a mind of her own and was attempting to stand up for her rights. Her mother-in-law believe

      That's from grandma
A little boy and his grandfather are raking leaves in the yard. The little boy sees an earthworm trying to get back into its hole. He says, "Grandpa, I bet I can put that worm back in that hole." The grandfather replies, "I'll bet you five dollars you can't. It's too wiggly and limp to put back in that little hole." The little boy runs into the house and comes back out with a can of hair spray. He sprays the worm until it is straight and stiff as a board. The boy then proceeds to put the worm back into the hole. The grandfather hands the little boy five dollars, grabs the hair spray and runs into the house. Thirty minutes later the grandfather comes back out and hands the boy another five dollars. The little boy says, "Grandpa, you already gave me five dollars." The grandfather replies, "I know. That's from your Grandma."

Teaching Grandma to Blog (and Grandpa too)
My mother in law got a loptop! I couldn't believe what I heard when I first heard it. For many years, she was very resistant about computers and was adamant that she didn't want to try using a computer. I suppose she changed her mind.I told my husband the other day that if only I have the time, I want to initiate a part-time job teaching grandparents how to e-mail and blog. I think that's a cool part-time job! It would be so rewarding and fulfilling - teaching the grandmas and grandpas to use e-mail and to blog in order for them to stay in touch with their families, especially grandkids. It's also the best way to use their mind, and meet other seniors from all over the Unites States and from around the world. So, if you're a blogger SAHM who's looking for income, why not put an ad in the paper out teachng seniors how to e-mail and blog.Oh I really would like to fly over to Connecticut to teach my mother in law how to blog. I think she's be good at it like Millie. And I thin

      Grandma's birthday gift
Grandma turns 87 (I think) tomorrow, so I made her a lovely apron from my favorite apron pattern. This time I made it reversible, as you can see in the detail of the bow, and I like the heft it adds to the apron. Also, it looks a little short on my sister, because Gma is decidedly under five feet, so I had to shorten things a bit. We're also giving her a lovely old hardback copy of Pride and Predjudice. (She loves to read.)

      For Grandma K
I've talked about my Grammy Poe here, but I haven't mentioned my other grandmother, Grandma K (aka Dr. K). Anyone who knows her knows that it's not for lack of stories and character. She could fill up her own blog.At 81 years young, Grandma K is still going strong. She still quilts on a very regular basis at her church and is the life of any party. Before her busy retirement schedule, she used to teach home economics and served as the department chair for several years. She can whip up a meal faster than anyone I know. If she had a show like Paula Deen, it would only last about 10 minutes. She'd be done with a 4-course meal by the first commercial break. They'd have to fill, fill, fill.I talked to her tonight and told her how the triplets were really enjoying their tilapia. To my surprise, she has never fixed tilapia. I think it's high time she make some tilapia. So here's the recipe:Broiled Tilapia Pesto4 fillets of tilapia (6 oz. each)2 cloves garlic, minced1/3 c. fresh lemon

      My Grandma has Alzheimer's
It's not really a surprise - we've suspected it for a while now. I posted about it back in January last year when the suggestion first reared its head. However, actually hearing it confirmed is something of a shock really.Mum took Grandma back to the specialist today. There's no doubt she has been getting worse, and the fact that she agreed to the appointment without fuss shows she recognises it. Mum said he asked her various basic questions, such as what year it is, what the season is - and she had real trouble with it. She got the year eventually but while she could work out (by listing them on her fingers, apparently) that it is August she couldn't equate August with a season. So the diagnosis has finally been made. How the hell Grandad is going to cope with this I don't know. They're 84 and getting more and more frail, Grandad in particular. He aged very rapidly after his older brother (who had dementia) died - how many years ago is that now? Hi s sister lives next d

Nothing Says Vacation Like Barfing In Grandma's BMW
Watching a small child vomit evokes a particularly sharp feeling of helplessness. My sister and her family were out in the mini-van we're sharing this week, so I transferred The Poo's car seat to my mother's BMW for an afternoon jaunt to Chatham yesterday. We had a lovely time shopping there, and stopped for an early evening snack before heading for home. The drive back to our summer home is

      Gnomedex And Grandma De
Next month, I'll attend a conference called gnomedex, where I hope to learn alot more about blogging and social media -- that will maybe translate to some sort of added value for you as a visitor to and reader of this blog. I've always looked at this blog being primarily about autistic/family content to a very niche audience. I haven't spent alot of time trying to market it or expand it beyond its core objective - to give one guy's view of the ups-and-downs and sometimes humorous insights and commentary on his life with his autistic child. I have always hoped that if the right person finds the blog, that they end up bookmarking it coming back to it regularly, or when needed. Maybe I should aim higher with 'Autistic Dad', but with career and family obligations, I have to be realistic into what I can throw at this Web site. That being said, I hope to learn how to do more, or think differently, or possibly become more sophisticated and/or savvy in running and writing this Web blog.

      Not Your Grandma's Pearls
Classic pearls get a hip, modern update when paired with amethyst and sapphire and placed inside a cage of bright and oxidized sterling silver. Handcrafted by Joanna Jorgensen of Jorgensen Studio, these amazing earrings have an architectural, slightly gothic, feel to them, that are still very posh. The delicate lilac South Sea pearls and the tiny gemstones are so feminine and really play up the intricate design of the surrounding silver cage. They would add a shot of modern elegance to any look. See more of her beautiful designs HERE, including her beautiful Raku and Majolica Pottery.

"Do you wanna say hello to my grandma?"
Yeah, sorry I've been quiet - been in Napa, innit. Not really. But Ruff Sqwad were out there a few weeks ago and decided to make their own episode of Ayia Napa Uncovered. There's footage of them in the hotel, in the swimming pool, in KFC, checking out some girls... Just your usual kind of stuff to do while on holiday, I guess.Talking of Ruff Sqwad, they played at my last DO IT! party on the weekend just gone and killed it. I really am a massive fan of those guys. I told them to arrive an hour before they were supposed to play expecting them to be late but they actually turned up on time. They didn't mind waiting around and didn't hassle me for drinks tokens all night (like some other people I've booked before) and then went on a did an amazing long set, even though I didn't have much money to give them. I also went to Jammer's mixtape launch the night before (will have pics for Friday) but only stayed a little while. I heard Jam had 60 people on his guest list so it took ages fo

      Lets Take Down Grandma !
My friend “Nora” was very shaken by something that happened to her recently. While her six grandchildren were visiting, the oldest boy (age 13) shouted, “Let’s take her down!” and all six of the children attacked her, knocking her to the ground, then groping and hitting her.Nora is 73 and only 5 foot 2. Her oldest grandchild is 5 foot 7 and weighs 140 pounds. All of the grandchildren are large for their ages. The youngest, who is 7, weighs well over 70 pounds. My question is, what can elderly people do to protect themselves? Nora took the beating because she was afraid if she fought back, she’d be turned in for child abuse.Abridged >>

      Grandma’s Kitchen
I enjoy eating brunch so we tried Grandma’s Kitchen. The small restaurant has a homey feel. You need to go before 11am to avail the 10% discount. We got to order 1 minute before the deadline! I never really enjoyed the food sadly, either it was too bland, or starchy (steak). Though my other friends loved their order (peppered steak), it was not really my thing. You can order pancakes, waffles, omelet too. The service waitresses/waiters can speak a bit English so you can explain what you want. Though this is not my favorite, you can try but order the right ones. Try the cheesecakes, I heard that it’s their best seller. Grandma's don't know everything
Little Tony was staying with his grandmother for a few days. He'd been playing outside with the other kids for a while when he came into the house and asked her, "Grandma, what is that called when two people are sleeping in the same room and one is on top of the other?" She was a little taken aback, but decided to tell him the truth. "It's called sexual intercourse, darling." Little Tony just said,"Oh, OK" and went back outside to talk and play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, "Grandma, it is not called sexual intercourse! It's called Bunk Beds and Jimmy's Mom wants to talk to you!!"

      CULTURE: Old Grandma Hardcore
Let me begin this post with a disclaimer. I love my grandma. She's lovely. I'd never wish for anyone else. I will admit, though, that if I were transported to an alternate dimension in which my grandma never existed and I could choose one elderly lady to replace her, I would totally choose Old Grandma Hardcore. Below are the reasons why.She owns an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP. Which big time company reps gave to her.She plays heaps of games. Not just family friendly DS titles - the kind Nicole Kidman might play if advertisements were a reflection of reality - but hardcore FPS titles like Gears of War and Resistance: Fall of Man.She plays Xbox Live and unlocks achievement points and stuff. She played Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters in her hospital bed.She seems like an awesome person to know.I admire anyone who breaks two age-old (excuse the pun) stereotypes: that all gamers are under 15 and male. Sure, she's just one person, but anything that isn't this is a step in the
