A prize fund of $1.5 million is waiting for the winning horses. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of the Uk's population will bet on the race and all the major bookmakers give odds on the Grand National. Good news, sports fans. I've spent the past two and a half minutes studying the names, numbers and colours (completely disregarding any sort of form or stats, obviously) of tomorrows Grand National runners and can exclusively reveal the first three horses who will be romping home to win you a fortune will be:1. King John's Castle2. Butler's Cabin3. Bewleys BerryA heavily plural selection, chosen using three important factors: One wears my lucky number, one features my middle name and one is trained by a man I saw driving down my street about a month ago.Use this valuable information as you see fit. I'm off to Ladbrokes to see how much I can cash a small independent record label in for.Best of British.
This week the internet was buzzing with the news that Wordpress 2.5, the latest and greatest incarnation of everybody’s favourite blogging platform, is out. It is a huge step up from previous incarnations, with a more ajaxy look and a number of bugs fixed. Plus there’s a newly designed dashboard.
Personally, I’m not sold on it.

Michael O'Leary head of Ryanair, has failed to back his own horse, 'Hear the Echo' in the Irish Grand National. The odds; 33-1. The horse won in fine form beating 'Royal County Star' the favourite at 6-1."I thought he was going out for a run to keep himself warm," said Mr. O'Leary. He described himself as "gobsmacked" after the result. He even attempted to deter people from backing the horse themselves.Mr. O'Leary's business judgement was completely lacking this day and he is not known from shying away from a challenge. He also took delight in accepting the trophy from P.M. Mr. Ahern who is often at logger heads with Mr. Ryan on government policy. Source: Reuters
The Lamb was the first grey horse to win the Aintree Grand National.He was actually a full horse - a stallion (I suppose it made him jump a bit higher) and stood little higher than 15 hands in height.The Lamb Race RecordDateCourseRaceDistanceValueWeightJockeyPricePlace1866-67 Apr 25 1867PunchestownKildare Hunt Plate3m 4f£28510.7MurphyNo PriceswonMay 15 1867MullacurryCounty Louth Stakes3m 2f£16511.7Mr LongNo PricesunplMay 16 1867MullacurryArdee Plate Handicap2m 6f£10010.12Mr LongNo Prices4th1867-68 Nov 7 1867LiverpoolHandicap Plate3m100 sovs11.11Wynne100/8unplNov 22 1867WarwickLeamington Grand Annual H'cap Chase4m£59410.12WynneunquotedunplNov 27 1867CroydonGrand Met Handicap Chase3m 4f£67010.5Wynne100/8unplMar 4 1868LiverpoolGrand National4m 2f£1,57010.7Mr Edwards9/1wonApr 3 1868BedfordGrand National Handicap Chase4m£84012.1Mr Edwards6/1unpl1868-69

Yet again, an Irish horse takes the English Grand National. He may not have been one of the favourites, but there is delight all round for those connected to the horse after Silver Birch won the 160th running of this most historic of jump races.
flangracneig pgoramian I’ll be honest, I have about as much interest in embroidery than I do in horse racing, certainly since the first year, where my mates at the time didn’t drink or do anything fun, just spend days down the bookmakers gambling on sport. After drifting away from them, I vowed never to spend more than 10 minutes a year within a bookmakers as those places are dull and depressing.
The 10 minutes a year is today however, as today is The Grand National. For the unaware, the Grand National is a huge clusterfuck of horses running around a hugely famous Aintree racetrack on the outskirts of Liverpool. It is impossible to predict the winner - as there are all sorts of tangibles, including massive hurdles and horses getting in each others way.
My mum loves the Grand National, which is probably why I take an interest. She used to tell stories about “how she watched Red Rum go round the track” and “We used to go to the ground the day after and help
The Grand National is a great race and one which the bookmakers love as the housewives come out in force to have a fun 'punt'. It isn't to be taken very seriously as a race to make money from however. If you want to have some fun with the National this weekend here's the way to do it.The 'Backer's Book' - Prices supplied by Blue Square Assume you fancy the following five horses to win the race and you have £50 stake money. You could divide your £50 equally into 5 x £10 bets or you could create a backer's book and stake according to the horses implied chances. There is no rhyme nor reason to the horses selected, they are illustrative only.Grand NationalJoes Edge 9/1 (10.00%) (i.e. 9/1+1=10)Numbersixvalverde 16/1 (5.89%)Billyvoddan 16/1 (5.89%)Simon 16/1 (5.89%)Slim Pickings 33/1 (2.94%)If we add the percentage chance implied by the odds together we get:10 + 5.89 + 5.89 + 5.89 + 2.94 = 30.61 %So, the Backer's percentage of the book is 30.61%. That is, by backing the five horses
Thinking of running a Grand National sweepstake this year? Horses for Causes, whose three-year-old Brave Jack is trained by John Best and runs in aid of Cancer Research UK - are producing a very special kit to make your sweepstake a bit more special.
The kit includes deluxe full-colour factsheets on every horse in the race, including photographs, jockeys’ colours, form and commentary. It beats cutting the names out of the newspaper - and it’s completely free to download from the Horses for Causes website.
It’s a great way to get friends and colleagues glued to the big race who might never have watched a horse race before, and it’s also a fantastic opportunity to raise some money for charity. Horses for Causes support Cancer Research UK, CHASE hospice for children, the Samson Centre and Rehab UK, or you could choose a charity that matters to you and use the sweepstake kit to raise some cash. You just ask everyone buying a ticket for the sweep to make a small do
Congratulations if you picked the winner of the Grand National this year, but if you're serious about making regular profits from horse racing all year round then you can do this through trading. This is done through betting exchanges such as Betfair, who offer person-to-person betting, allowing you to back selections to win, and lay selections if you think they will lose. This is potentially very lucrative, particularly during the morning of a race, because whereas bookmakers prices remain fairly static during this time, exchange prices are a lot more volatile. As a result there are occasions when the exchange prices differ significantly from the bookmakers prices in general. This is how exchange traders make their profits, by backing a high price and laying it back at a lower price, or laying low and backing higher. Often traders will leave guaranteed profits whatever the outcome if they get on the right side of a trade:For example, let's say you backed Horse A for £100 at 3 (equiv
