Unveiling Nature's Grand Masterpiece (Grand Canyon, USA)
It was minus fifteen outside but this is one of the world’s great travel wonders. I can’t recall if that was Fahrenheit or Celsius but it doesn’t really matter when it is that cold. Such temperatures are simply never experienced in my home town in Australia. I was half asleep wrapped in a cosy blanket in my cabin. The alarm had just gone off and it was still dark outside. Should I just sleep

Federal judge blocks uranium company's test near Grand Canyon
A federal judge has blocked a British mining company from exploring for uranium near the Grand Canyon, agreeing with environmental groups which sued the U.S. Forest Service for approving the plan without full environmental reviews. The Sierra Club, Grand Canyon Trust and Center for Biological Diversity sued the Forest Service last month for allowing VANE Minerals Group to drill at up to 39 locations on seven sites on the Kaibab National Forest. The company is seeking commercial quantities of uranium, which has soared in price in recent years and resulted in a wave of new development. U.S. District Judge Mary Murguia in Phoenix issued a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction stopping the drilling late Friday after a hearing, said Sandy Bahr, conservation outreach di

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - Yellowstone National Park
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the primary geologic feature in the Canyon District of Yellowstone National Park. It is roughly 20 miles long, measured from the Upper Falls to the Tower Fall area. The canyon is up to 900 feet deep and a half mile in width. The colors in the canyon are also a result of different iron compounds. When the old geyser basin was active, the "cooking" of the rock caused chemical alterations in these iron compounds. Exposure to the elements caused the rocks to change colors. The rocks are oxidizing or rusting. The colors indicate the presence or absence of water in the individual iron compounds. Most of the yellows in the canyon are the result of iron present in the rock rather than sulfur. The falls are erosional features formed by the Yellowstone River as

Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk in 3-D
Seeing as how I'm a huge fan of the Grand Canyon, my wife and I went to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum to see the new documentary, Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk at the six story IMAX theatre inside the museum. Over the past 20 years I've been 3 times to the Rim, including the North, South, and the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Read notes on our Grand Canyon trip a few years ago. After seeing the documentary, I'm anxious to go on a future trip down to Phantom Ranch and rafting on the river. The 3-D film was inspiring to watch, as the river rapids surged in your face and the sun radiated off the rock cliffs formed by the river. The rafting trip through the Canyon is led

Grand Canyon Car Rental Guide to Getting a Car at the Grand Canyon
There are many reasons why you would want to get a car rental while at the Grand Canyon. Although there is a taxi service and a free shuttle bus that runs throughout the park, having your own vehicle is a wonderful convenience that will make your visit to the Grand Canyon all the better. There have been car rental agencies at the Grand Canyon in the past, but they've shut down for some reason. I spent over a year and a half living and working at the Grand Canyon. One of my jobs was working at the Grand Canyon Airport as a refueler and meeting the many private pilots that would fly in looking for a Grand Canyon car rental. You can imagine their ire when they found out that nothing was available. While I was working there the company that I was employed by made a deal with Enterprise and sec

So one weekend I decided to stay in Phoenix and drive to the Grand Canyon.I drove from Phoenix to Flagstaff Arizona on Interstate 17. As I drove over the hills towards Flagstaff I ran into a hail storm. So when I arrived in Flagstaff I bought a full tank of gas and asked if the roads to the Grand Canyon National Park were clear. The people at the gas station assured me that while there were some snow flurries, the roads were still clear. So I left Flagstaff on Highway 180 heading towards the Grand Canyon. As I drove the snow kept falling harder and harder. The road became covered in snow, but there was sti

Everyone should see The Grand Canyon
About tens years ago my family drove from California to Indiana. We went 50 miles out of our way so we could see the Grand Canyon which we hadn't seen before. You can go right to the edge where there is safety rails, you can really look right down into all of it. I remember looking down and having a real physical feeling of vertigo. I thought I was seeing the bottom, then I realized no...thats the bottom. It really is DEEP and it can play tricks on your depth perception. But beautiful beyond belief. As you see in this picture, we met some people from Japan who just thought our boys were adorable and they wanted a picture with an "American Family." It was so cute, they really liked holding our youngest son Alec who at the time was 4 and thought they were nuts. But he made it through and provided for a fun memory. (of which I'm thankful to have)I hope you watch the aerial footage and visit the links I've included. EVERYONE should at least see the Grand Canyon even if it is in photograp

      Grand Canyon and Skywalk Tours
The question I am posing — to visit or not to visit the Grand Canyon Skywalk when you’re heading to the Grand Canyon and/or taking a Grand Canyon tour. The Grand Canyon, on a tour from Las Vegas First, my bias in all this: I have never been to the Grand Canyon. And I am starting to plan the - storied? cliche? inevitable? - family trip to Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Arizona and the southwest. So I wanted some good, actionable, honest travel advice. My reputation as a ‘dad’ and a ‘husband’ are at stake. It would be our first major family road trip, so I cannot mess it up. (Or else.) Step 1: Ask people who know I work at a travel company, so I asked some of our staff. They all agreed on a few things — tour the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, if you’re planning a summer trip with kids, because the Grand Canyon itself gets hot. As in, HOT HOT HOT. Fair enough, seems like good advice. I love Vegas, it doesn’t take much to convince m

Technorati tags: Turism, turismo, mexico, estados+unidos, Grand Canyon

      Grand Canyon (July 26, 2005)
Monday, I went with the Family and the guests to the Grand Canyon. The adventures started almost immediately. About halfway to Williams (where we were going to catch the train), one of the Suburbans (we took two) started overheating. So we pulled both vehicles to the side of the road, where we managed to get most people (13 of us) into one vehicle and left Uncle Larry and one of the guests with the broken Suburban, while the rest of us went on. We were hoping that the two we left behind could catch the train too, but we weren't sure there would be time.Once on the train, everyone settled into the restored Pullman. I don't really remember what happened with the people that got left behind and Aunt Jane, who went back to pick them up, but we all got to the rim, Uncle Larry and someone else arriving shortly after the rest of us (they got there too late for the train we were on, but were put on the next train). We wandered around for a while, sticking to the rim, then took the trai

      Grand Canyon SkyWalk
The Glass Bridge Construction of the Skywalk began March of 2004 and will open March 28, 2007. Upon completion, the Glass Bridge will be suspended 4,000 feet above the Colorado River on the very edge of the Grand Canyon. On May 2005, the final test was conducted and the stucture passed engineering requirements by 400 percent, enabling it to withstand the weight of 71 fully loaded Boeing 747 airplanes (more than 71 million pounds). The bridge will be able to sustain winds in excess of 100 miles per hour from 8 different directions, as well as an 8.0 magnitude earthquake within 50 miles. More than one million pounds of steel will go into the construction of the Grand Canyon Skywalk.Design-tested by a world-renowned team involved in such projects as: Taipei 101 Mandalay Bay Resort The Palms Hotel Casino Wynn Resort Las Vegas Hoover Dam

      Grand Canyon Skywalk
Grand Canyon Skywalk Quite possibly one of the ugliest tourist developments I have ever seen the Grand Canyon Skywalk opens to the public in 2 days. At $75US it’s not a cheap way to see the canyon eigther, in fact personally I don’t even think the whole development looks like it is worth $75. Still in a couple of days the carpark will be filled with RV’s, SUV’s and Tour Buses and the skywalk will be straining under the weight of overweight middle americans with wallets bigger than their brains. The walk is conveniently shaped like a horseshoe probably designed to point visitors straight back at their vehicles after they have completed the obligitory 500 steps after first stepping out of it. Grand Canyon Skywalk: Opening Ceremonies
Bootee-clad Skywalkers on opening day On the Grand Canyon Skywalk, everyone wears bootees. You get to keep them, and for the $25 you’ll pay to enjoy this horseshoe walkway that’s been clipped onto the side of the Grand Canyon, that’s a good deal, because the Skywalk experience is priceless… It’s sort of counter-intuitive that the new must-see attraction in the Grand Canyon is man-made. After all this is one of the great natural wonders of the world, so does it really need $30 million worth of metal and glass to make it more attractive? Well, yes. That’s the brilliance of the Skywalk: it’s not an attraction in its own right — in fact it blends in so well you could miss seeing it from some angles if you weren’t on the lookout for it — but a sort of magnifying glass for the Canyon itself. Once you’re out there, walking on top of the glass and looking down 4,000 feet to the canyon floor, you’ll forget

Grand Canyon Park Officials Pressured by Bush Appointees on Geological Age
Bush appointees pressure parks officials to toe the religious fundamentalist line (via Donklephant): According to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) in a report released this week [PDF], Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees. Furthermore, a book approved by the Service claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah’s flood, rather than by geologic forces, is on sale in the park for more than three years, even though a review was promised to Congress and the press. A Freedom of Information request [PDF] reveals that no review has ever been requested, nor taken place. “In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our National Park Service is under orders to suspend its belief in geology,” stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch. “It is disconcerting that the official position of a national park as to t

Grand Canyon, good day trip from Las Vegas!!
The Grand Canyon is something you have to see in person to really appreciate the beauty and grandeur! The sheer size of the canyon, over 250 miles long and over a dozen mile wide in some areas. The contrast of the Colorado river running through the narrow canyons, the rocks glimmering in the sun! The different colors of the rocks is quite amazing, and it changes depending on time of day and with the light. There are many tour company's in Las Vegas to take you there. Usally you will have the chance for a few different stops and sites at the canyon. Check the search on here for info, or you can check at the tour desk at your hotel.
