I am always on a lookout for healthier alternatives to everyday treats. So when I saw Manasi's announcement for Healthy Cooking - A Cookbook Giveaway Event, I decided to go right ahead and try a new recipe that I put together last week, while considering a healthier approach to Banana Bread. Now, Banana Bread is a great favourite in my home and we adore it warm with hazelnut-cinnamon coffee!! But
I am constantly on a search for fun, quick, on-the-go breakfast recipes. This week I tried making granola bars for the first time.Did you ever make something for the first time and then kick yourself because you had never made it before? Well, this is one of those recipes. It it so incredibly easy. No serious baking skills needed. It's just easy and plain good. And I get tired of muffins... have I
Barley is stated by historians to be the oldest of all cultivated grains. It seems to have been the principal bread plant among the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. The Jews especially held the grain in high esteem, and sacred history usually uses it interchangeably with wheat, when speaking of the fruits of the Earth.Among the early Greeks and Romans, barley was almost the only food of the co

Westminster University has been having a clear-out of its Learning Resources Centre these past two weeks, and I've managed to pick up a number of good books including Applied Economics (highly recommended), a biography of Charles De Gaulle and two books on former Russian president Boris Yeltsin.I wanted to blog on his autobiography, Against The Grain. I should point out my copy is an early edition
So, most of us dieters know there has been a "bar craze" to accompany the "diet craze." There are so many bars at the supermarket to chose from, but not all of them are good for you or your diet (I've seen them go up to 400 calories which is way too much for such a small snack). So, when I look at bars, I look at the actual ingredients, the calories, the fat content, and the fiber content. I make
The arrogance of bureaucracy is astounding. For 17 years the FDA has not allowed packagers of brown rice to "claim" to be a whole-grain product.
The FDA has me scratching my head again. Last month they deemed brown rice to be whole grain. Um, who ever thought it wasn’t a whole-grain food?

Chicago -- A sharp gain in crude oil prices pushed grain trading Friday, pressuring demand for corn and soybeans on the Chicago Board of Trade.Corn was up 6 1/2 to up 7 3/4; soybeans were up 3 to up 8; wheat was up 25 1/2 to up 26 1/4; oats were off 4 1/2 to off 5.A weak dollar, a surge in oil and wet weather lifted corn Friday. With all the agate and other beautiful rocks we find on our island beaches, I bet Whidbey Island sand is just lovely. This article from Discover magazine makes me want to go out and buy a 3D microscope. The photographer's official site, with lots more photos, is here.

Try: Organic sprouted 100% whole-grain flourless bread. It's made with fresh grains and legumes, such as wheat, barley, beans, spelt, and millet, that are first allowed to sprout instead of being ground into flour. Then the sprouts are formed into batches of dough and slowly baked.

If you're currently blaming biofuels for the rise in food prices there's good news and bad news. First the good news. You're right. The bad news is you're mostly wrong. Over at the NY Times Roger Cohen points to the major culprits involved in higher food prices... Hundreds of millions of people have moved from poverty into the global economy over the past decade in Asia. They’re eating twice a day, instead of once, and propelling rapid urbanization. Their demand for food staples and once unthinkable luxuries like meat is pushing up prices. At the same time, the rising price of commodities over the past year has largely tracked the declining parity of the beleaguered dollar. Rice prices have shot up in dollar terms, far less against the euro. Countries like China are offloading depreciati

We traveled over the weekend to visit my Great-Grandmother. She fell last week and broke her hip along with several vertebrae in her neck. Despite that hard fall, she is doing wonderful and is ever spunky and surprising! I have no doubt she will make it through rehab with flying colors, even at 97! We truly appreciate all the well wishes and kind thoughts we received through email and comments!!There is something therapeutic about making muffins. I made these muffins last weekend for our trip to see Grandma, and then again when we returned home for our "grab and go" breakfasts this week. Packed with nutritious whole grains, healthy proteins and fats, and just a touch of sweetness, these muffins are satisfying and delicious!I need a "photographic lighting" fairy to visit my kitchen! "To see a world in a grain of sand" wrote William Blake, I think he knew a thing or two. Sand certainly takes on menacing form when the wind launches its savage attack.Tiny splinters of quartz are whipped in to a frenzy, slashing everything in their path. The process that takes place here has a fancy name - saltation, which basically describes how sand grains move either in the wind, or underwater. For plants and animals who live in the dunes, these battles are a way of life. It is the challenge they accepted when they colonised the sand.Where sea meets land, the forces of nature stage some of their most violent battles.Sand is the aftermath. ADDIS ABABA(IRIN, March 20 2008) - The Ethiopian government’s decision to remove some taxes on grains is unlikely to have an immediate impact on rising food prices in rural areas, where most of the consumers are actually producers, an economist said.It may, however, ease the burden on the urban poor in several months’ time, if the government follows through on implementation."The fact that 85 percent of Ethiopians are living in rural areas means a reduction of value added tax and turnover tax will not have an impact on their lives," the Ethiopian economist, who declined to be named, said."The reduction will probably help the urban poor; [but] the change will not be that significant," he told IRIN in the capital, Addis Ababa. "It will take at least six months to see some changes in the

LAWTON, N.D. — Whatever Dennis Miller decides to plant this year on his 2,760-acre farm, the world needs. Wheat prices have doubled in the last six months. Corn is on a tear. Barley, sunflower seeds, canola and soybeans are all up sharply.

From Twenty Four Hours a Day, Jan. 6, "No act of kindness is ever too small to serve a good purpose. Oceans are made possible by little drops of water. Beaches are formed by tiny grains of sand. Slowly but surely, small efforts combine to help, encourage, and lead others to an ocean of success".Many times I have thought to myself- "why bother?" of "what's the point?"- especially if I assumed that my own efforts would be minute or ineffectual. Recently I read about the boy who was tossing beached starfish back into the sea. Someone passed by and laughed at him, saying "look at the thousands of starfish lying there. Do you think you can really make a difference in saving them? The little boy tossed in another one and said " Made a difference to that one!".I think that is the point here- Who

Textured tortillasI really like to make tortillas substituting a cup or so of whole wheat flour for white. The whole wheat adds a nice flavor change. I haven't been able to find whole wheat flour for a long time, but I've since been informed that Paiz is carrying it. I guess that I just gave up looking for it and didn't notice when they started selling it. That happens sometimes. I just forget about the things that I used to miss.I recently found this packaged "peeled" wheat at one of the import stores that seems to have a big selection of Middle Eastern food now. I bought it not having any idea of what I would do with it just because I really miss having whole grains. I had never heard of peeled wheat.Last Friday when I was making tortillas for my Tex-Mex guests, I wondered if I could make whole wheat flour by grinding these wheat berries. I ground them up in the coffee grinder leaving some of the pieces a little chunky. I've since decided that "peeled" wheat must be what white
China has been long known to come up with various ideas which people find amazing. But this aspect of making vegetation global warming full-proof has got to solicit some doubtful minds. Making grains ultra-violet system resistant does answer ½ of the global warming issue on crops but what about the edibility that they have when applying such “protectors” in the process?
This is not to take away the credit for effort made by Chinese scientists, but they have to show some supporting claims with regards to safety as well. Sure this is something that can help combat one problem, but it may lead to more serious ones if not proven to be effective.

A great little site to find some hard to find stones and vintage beads is A Grain of Sand. They also have some pretty one of a kind vintage box clasps and not to forget the rather large inventory of vintage crystals and beads they have. Reasonably priced and everything is in nice shape. Oh, and the vintage stampings are nice too and not just for jewelry makers but they make great additions to mixed media projects. PS - They also have buttons, findings, lockets and tons of other stuff!! PPS - The brass stampings shown here can be found in the findings section under stamps.
www.dogflu.caResults of a new study find that eating whole grain cereals can reduce a person's risk of developing heart failure. It has long been known that eating cereal with whole grains could reduce one's blood pressure and risk of having a heart attack, but now according to U.S. researchers they can also reduce the risk of heart failure. For their study, Djousse and colleagues studied the breakfast habits of more than 21,000 male doctors with an average age of 53.7 years for nearly 20 years. They found that men who ate 1 bowl of whole grain cereal per day, had a 28% reduced risk of developing heart failure compared to men who did not."Eating half a cup to a cup of whole grain breakfast cereal may help lower your blood pressure. It may help lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease," said Dr. Luc Djousse of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston."This study adds another piece to the puzzle. It may also lower your risk of heart failure," he added.Accord
I snack on pretzels pretty often but I'm not generally loyal to any brand. There are slight differences in quality but not much, so I'll usually just buy whichever one is on sale. That's how I came across Herr's Whole Grain Pretzel Sticks. I was a bit reluctant since I'm not a fan of Herr's potato chips but I'm glad I gave them a shot. These "multigrain pretzels with flax and honey" are actually unique in the world of pretzels. For some reason, I taste pumpernickel but the ingredients include everything but.....tons of different grains and poppy, sesame, and caraway seeds. Lon and I also noted that they use a good salt on the outside. If you're not worried about your sodium intake, try this healthy snack.

Knowledge of pet nutrition is increasing every year and not all experts agree with each other on how certain data should be interpreted. One group supports the ‘scientific assembly theory’ where a diet can be scientifically engineered. Composed of all required nutrients, coming from a range of different sources and on a mathematical level everything your dog needs is present. A second groups theorizes that Mother Nature will always beat science. This school of thought we can call the ‘natural or holistic theory’. Human grade ingredients are used and any meat-by products or artificial additives or preservatives are avoided.
A new holistic dry dog food was launched in July 2007 by the Wellness brand of Natural Food and Treats for Pets. This product is developed by followers of the second school of thought. Wellness CORE Dog is based on the raw feeding philosophy and the belief that “You are what you eat!”.

I just received this note. This lovely customer-now-rep is a long-time cancer survivor, having undergone the lengthiest chemotherapy treatment I’ve ever heard of (years). She is now on adjunct therapies and is very sensitive to chemical changes in her environment.
She also adores her six kitties. I dare say, loving and being loved by them helped her through many a rough treatment day.
Note: I had to remove the name of the pet food, wasn’t sure it would meet my company’s compliance rules. It was a grocery store brand, heavily grain and by-product based, but was not on the recall lists.

Unlike alot of people, I love porridge. Often when I tell friends this, they screw up their faces which suggests to me that it’s not a favourite of many. So, I was pleased to read this article today.
Researchers from Harvard Medical School have identified that those who eat whole-grain cereals for breakfast have a 28 per cent lower risk of developing heart failure. You need to be eating it 7 or more times a week, according to the report which is kind of interesting seeing there are only 7 days in a week
There’s good news for those who eat whole-grain less than 7 times a week though with the study showing that the risk of heart failure falls 22 per cent in those who eat the cereals two to six times a week and by 14 per cent in those who eat them up to once week.

This painting typifies the grain elevators that dot the plains of Canada. There is something lonely about these structures and all of the scenery around it. I spent a summer in Canada during my college days and I remember these structures along with the long days. I am pleased with this work although there are some details that aren't exactly correct but I am overlooking them. Can anyone find the major glitch?
I'm trying to make the T-shirt with the gathered front from Simplicity 4076. I have the pattern ready and my knit fabric is washed. It's a black and white mystery knit I've had in my stash forever and it has enough stretch. However, when I fold it to get ready to put the pattern pieces down, the grain is skewed. I've looked at Marcy's Tilton's guide to sewing t-shirts and she suggests pulling to get it back on grain. I remember my mom and I used to do this for wovens, but I don't really remember how it works. How do you know which side to pull (this sounds like such a stupid question). Somewhere I've read that you should follow one stitch lengthwise and fold from there, but that would make me blind, as this is rather fine knit. Help!Last post by LindaO at Wed 03 Oct 2007 09:11:28 AM Total posts: 7

The regular price of this stuff was $17/meter -- the fabric is a stretch cotton blend with a metallic stripe. The grain can't be straightened (I've tried). I plan to give this a shot anyway, only because the item I plan to make is only 10-12" long (a short vest) and fairly fitted. But holy moly... maybe it's because I prewashed and dried it, but could it also be the fact that it's a stretch fabric? I'm going to tell the store about this today. Yeah, yeah, I know I should be asking for a refund, but I did slightly disobey the care instructions by machine drying it. The care instructions were supposedly because of the metallic thread, but my daughter is not going to be air drying clothing any time soon, so I thought it best to pretreat it in the same way she'd be laundering it.
Sigh
I think it does matter, but I'm wondering how much. I am considering a cotton/linen lightweight suiting. I plan to wash this carefully in cool water.
Would it matter if I made pants out of this by cutting it as though the grain were perpendicular to the selvedge? In other words, the pant legs would go across from selvedge to selvedge.
I am considering this because I am interested in making pan
