In June, I wrote THIS blog post about a National Geographic film documenting the dangerous lives of mountain gorillas in Congo's Virunga National Park.
After four gorillas were killed by illegal charcoal traders to send a message to local wildlife officials, National Geographic sent a film team to document the unfolding situation.
What they found was a community of 200 extremely endangered
During the 1980's a census was conducted to count the number of Western lowland gorillas still living on Earth. At that time, scientists estimated about 100,000 of these gorillas existed. Since the census, it is believed that the number of gorillas had dwindled to 50,000.
Fortunately, a recent survey conducted in the Lac Tele Community Reserve in northern Congo uncovered a huge number of

Die Gerüchteküche brodelt und es scheint zu stimmen, dass Dian Fossey gar nicht tot ist. Tatsächlich arbeitet sie zur Zeit an an einem Projekt mit dem Namen “Gorillas beim Baden”.

Our group had been trekking for three and a half hours through thick forest, the thorns catching our clothing and our feet sloshing through the muddy grounds. It was well over 30°C (86°F) and 100% humidity and getting hotter. The six of us were starting to get a little agitated, being drained of fluid and having started the early morning with such anticipation. The glint off the guard’s rifle caught my eye as he macheted away more branches. There is something unnerving about guns, especially when carried by two guys who hardly seemed old enough to be out of school. They walk intently with a clear direction in mind, though there were no obvious paths to follow. The rear guard pointed right to show piles of matted leaves and branches in the trees. Though I couldn’t hear him, it was to b

Earth-centred news for the health of air, water, habitat and the fight against global warming
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is committed to gorilla protection, science, field research, education and awareness, and economic development. Our activities take place on many levels and places, with people from Rwanda and elsewhere in Africa, the United States, and around the world. Recently, have begun to expand and diversify our programs to address pressing conservation challenges on a wider regional scale. The following are some of our most important activities:
Monitoring and protecting the mountain gorillas residing Rwanda's Parc National des Volcans, through the Karisoke Research Center's programs, including tracking and anti-poaching patrols.
Sharing our knowledge and experience to promote the use of common gorilla monitoring protocols and practices.
Collecting demographic, behavioral and environmental data, often in collaboration with major universities in Africa.
Funding small-scale development activities in communities near the gorilla habitat, in support o

I very rarely write about topics not relating to health, technology or fitness but I could not let this one go by without posting.
The World Conservation Union (IUCN) has identified more than 16,000 species threatened with extinction in the 2007 Red List of threatened species.
Included in this list are gorillas, orangutans as well as plants and coral which are sliding closer to extinction.
Critically endangered is deemed as an extreme high risk of extinction or possibly extinct.
Some of the animals to make this new list include the western lowland gorilla which has moved from the Endangered to the Critically Endangered category.
Numbers have declined by more than 60% over the last 20-25 years.
Listed as some of the reason for this include forest clearance which has allowed hunters access to previously inaccessible areas. Ebola virus has followed, wiping out one-third of the total gorilla population in protected areas, and up to 95% in some regions.
The report is really quite depressi
What's even better than a gorilla? A super gorilla, of course!Complete with a replica of Superman's cape, no less. That's how you know he's super! I'd understand if this were a live television ad and Abbott & Costello weren't able to muster up enough fake enthusiasm to pull it off, but these are just drawings, and they still look like they'd rather be dead than hawking this stuff.I'm not sure what the message is, exactly, but I think it has something to do with making bad trades and wearing sweaters while intoxicated.Don't ever give a woman a bad hairstyle. She will not take it lightly. She's talking about you, John Byrne!
Illegal charcoal trade in the Congo's Virunga National Park is endangering Diane Fossey's gorillas in the mist. In this photo, park rangers are destroying a charcoal oven that was operating illegally in the park. The charcoal, produced by burning valuable and protected forests and worth $30 million U.S., is sent to neighboring Rwanda, which has banished the production of this substance within its borders. This means that the most fertile source for charcoal is the protected Virunga National Park in neighboring Congo. Just recently in July, eight rare mountain gorillas were shot dead. The rangers who protect the gorillas and their habitat are hounded by the traders, and many who protect the gorillas and park have been tortured. One good bit of news: The five-month old baby of one of the murdered females was found dehydrated but alive. For more on the story, click here and here.
Actress Natalie Portman and animal expert Jack Hanna have teamed up for a US TV special on gorilla treks in Rwanda.
The Garden State star features in an hour-long documentary called Gorillas On The Brink. The documentary is set to air on TV network Animal Planet later this year.
The film about endangered gorillas sees Hanna take Portman on a trek around Congo’s Virunga National Park.

Fed talks of "risks of high inflation", what has changed in last 3 yrs?High gasoline prices continueSubprime-mortgage delinquencies, now similar issues spreading to Alt-A (Housing Boom Tied to Sham Mortgages - Washington Post.com)Increasing housing inventories and dropping pricesForget subprime delinquencies and defaults, what about credit card debt levels? These are issues the Fed deities are still not addressing, until it gets too late I guess. In what sort of world do Fed governors live? Or do they live in a hole in the ground? Do they shop? Do they have friends whose houses are being foreclosed? Are they the same human beings as you and I? You too may wonder whether these folks have any clue about how to address such fundamental economic issues. Even in my modesty and humbleness, I feel like I know more economic stuff than these clueless bozos, my English is better for sure! Anyway, while waiting for some shorting trade setups I came across this music band that I thought is nice. So
At first glance, you would probably shy clear of sharing a room with a Silverback Gorilla. A 400lb gorilla is not something you wish to take lightly. They are big, unpredictable and strong. Smelly too. They tend to ruin furniture, not because they are aggressive, but rather because your average living room couch was build for lighter things - such as two growing teenagers involved in a violent tussle.
