I was reading a post on Cisco SP360, "Google and the Open Mobile Phone", about Google phone (one of the most visited link on the site, got dugg twice!) initiative and the wireless industry's view of the matter. According to BusinessWeek, HTC might be the first of the alliance to bring out the Google Phone. So what I said a few months ago, I can repeat; '"Google Phone is Coming Soon" with a touch screen!'Florian Seiche, HTC's European vice president, said that the company's goal was to provide a "broad portfolio" of devices targeting various segments of the market, from consumer to enterprise. Android devices, he said, would fall squarely into the relatively new consumer side of HTC's business, targeted this year with the Touch phone. "The core nature of Android is the fact that the internet should be put right at the centre of your mobile experience," said Seiche. "It is fair to say that it will be very much focused on the growing part of the consumer market that is using mobile devices for much more than voice calls and text messages." So we all talked about it, we speculated. Certain people were right. But it’s not happening. Via Wall Street Journal: Google Inc. announced today an ambitious alliance with 33 handset makers, wireless carriers and other technology companies to create low-cost mobile phones based on “open” technology standards. The Mountain View, Calif., Internet company said the new cellphone technology it is creating with its partners – which it calls Android – would enable faster development of innovative cellphone features. The long-awaited announcement of Google's phone plans will occur earlier than expected, and not in the form previously laid out, says the Wall Street Journal. While it had been suggested that an announcement would come November 13th at the earliest, the Journal's sources say that it will mostly likely happen Monday, November 5th, and with different carriers. T-Mobile is still involved, but the other main party is said to be Sprint. Foreign carriers may be included, but have not been mentioned.Google is again said to be working with cellular networks and phone makers to promote an "open" application platform, courting companies such as HTC, LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. With T-Mobile Google is claimed to be going even further, cooperating directly on building phones using its software. When the efforts of any of these collaborations might bear fruit remains unknown, but Journal proposes that the earliest date for sale of a Google-ready phone would be mid-2008.

But the Journal is basically saying what we have been saying for some time now, first article here, and then the update here, both with photos that were mocked up Google phone. His source is someone inside HTC, the company that Google's working with to pick one of 20 models to finalize their design. Things had been quiet for a while on the Google Phone rumors front, but it looks like talk about the device has surfaced again. Only, this time, the concept is looking much less like a rumor and more like an inevitability. Reports have been surfacing which indicate that Google has been showing off a prototype mobile phone to different carriers. According to an article published Thursday in the Wall Street Journal, Google is showing the the prototype around while continuing to hone and improve the product to offer a browsing and internet experience superior to what is currently available. Additionally, the Google phone will reportedly offer free service. Instead of relying on a large price tag and/or monthly fees, the Google phone will supposedly generate revenue for Google via commercial advertising dollars. Specifically, in exchange for free calling, Google phone users will be served advertisements. Google is particularly excited about the possibilities of mobile phone advertising.

We’ve all known within the industry that Google has been working on a phone to compete with the iPhone and others for some time now. In fact, I’ve seen and heard bits and pieces relating to this in the rumor mill for well over a year now. It turns out, that such rumors are true (confirmed by my sources) and Google has apparently been shopping around looking for providers worthy of carrying the coveted Google product. No one knows the exact specifications of the phone, but I have been hearing that it will waive traditional monthly fees and instead be advertisement supported. 구글폰에 대한 새로운 뉴스가 또 올라왔습니다. Some time ago there were rumors on the Internet about Google Phone to be launched soon. I took this to my least attention as I thought Google would never dare step in to the hardware industry with competitors like Apple etc. But I guess RegHardware just proved that perhaps I was wrong. To the disappointment of many and the low expectations of many more, there was no announcement on the hope of an up and coming Google phone. Probably a smart move on Google's behalf to not announce major advancements only to get a few weeks of publicity before the iPhone release pwns all. Though having an iPhone in your pocket may free up the need for stuffing your lower garments with socks, the Google phone may pleasure us with more girth. So we have seen a lot of blogs and sites buzzing about the Google phone and of course the big question is ‘are the rumours true’ Firstly for sure Google could do this but it would be a first foray into producing hardware so would require a very different direction to be taken, secondly we hear that Google is a key part of the iPhone with Google Maps for navigation so would it make sense to compete directly with it.
