StarOffice is Sun’s commercial implementation of the popular open source office suite OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org) and supports Open Document Format (ODF). StarOffice 8 is a full-featured office suite that contains a word processor, a spreadsheet tool, applications for presentations, databases, math formulas and drawing. It has support for most Microsoft Office formats (except for the formats introduced in Office 2007), but it can also export documents as PDF out of the box. The software normally costs $70, but it's available for free in Google Pack. It's worth noting that StarOffice has a huge installer (more than 140 MB), so you should download it only if you have a fast Internet connection.

StarOffice 8 es un completo paquete de aplicaciones de ofimatica, con procesador de textos, hoja de calculo, base de datos y editor de texto, es compatible con la mayoria de los archivos del Office de Microsoft (menos los del Office 2007), con la opción de poderse exportar los archivos a formato PDF.
SerÃa interesante saber porque Google no eligió OpenOffice.org… y quizás sea porque StarOffice incluye algunos componentes que pertenecen a Microsoft Office, como fuentes, plantillas y el clip art para de esta manera poder migrar con más facilidad los documentos al Office de Microsoft.

The other day I wrote about Google Pack and the great group of free software they include. Today they updated it and I’m not sure it’s for the better. A couple of apps were replaced. They got rid of Ad-Aware and replaced it with Spyware Doctor. I’m gonna download it and see how well it performs. I am a big fan of Ad-Aware so I think it’s a shame that it’s not there. From now on you can still get Ad-Aware from my sidebar here (remember the tutorial here).
Another thing I’m going to really miss is the free 6 months of Norton Anti-Virus. They put something called the Norton Security Scan. I’m not sure what this is but it promises to “Detect and remove viruses, worms and Trojans”. I guess you run this and then go get Avast for your anti-virus needs. I’ll be trying this out in the next couple of days too.
