I don’t aware of this feature in Google Desktop until one day it warns me about a potential harmful website. I thought all the way Google Desktop is doing indexing only. Installation and integration The first public beta of Google Desktop for Linux is now available for download. Released yesterday, this early beta only supports a limited subset of Google Desktop functionality. Google's previous efforts to port desktop applications to Linux have been hit or miss. Nunca me gustó Google Desktop, de la misma forma que nunca me gustaron los monopolios, las multinacionales o los poderes fácticos. Lo cual no quita reconocer las virtudes y los méritos que puedan albergar tales organizaciones.
Me gusta por ejemplo Gmail.
Pero eso de ceder a Google la indexación de tu computadora se me antoja como abrirle la puerta de tu casa al Estado o a la CocaCola. Un gesto temerario, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que tanto Mac como Linux incorporan excelentes buscadores.
Tuve instalado Google Desktop en un Windows durante un tiempo, y me dio la impresión de un pequeño monstruo en actividad permanente rebuscando entre las tripas de ficheros y carpetas.
Pero como también estoy a favor de que cada uno decida por su cuenta y lo pruebe (casi) todo, ahí va el enlace para que puedas decargar Google Desktop para Linux y decidir libremente.

I was pretty curious when news came down that Google was providing the Google Desktop for Linux. What I had been expecting was something along the lines of Nat’s Dashboard from back in the day. Instead I find Y.A.D.S. (Yet Another Desktop Search) for Linux. Oh well, hopefully the indexing is not as painfully resource intensive as beagled.

Google acaba de sacar, por fin, su primera versión de Google Desktop para Linux.
A diferencia de la versión de Windows, que nos permite colocar infinidad de “gadgets”, la versión de Linux sólo nos deja utilizar al Google Desktop, como un buscador, de manera similar al Google Desktop que salió para la MAC.
Pero como buscador, es bastante bueno, bues creará una base de todos nuestros archivos Open Office, HTML. PDF, PS y otros, para que podamos encontrarlos casi inmediatamente.
El nuevo Google Desktop para Linux, corre en Debian 4.0, Fedora 6, Ubuntu 6.10, Suse 10.1 y Red Hat 5.

Los sidebars, o barras laterales, están de moda. Con la introducción de Windows Vista al mercado, los usuarios de Windows probablemente empezarán a utilizar más y más los “gadgets” o “widgets”, que no son más que miniaplicaciones que pueden cumplir diversas tareas. Y con la “estandarización” de monitores widscreen, es un buen aprovechamiento del espacio extra que se ofrece en las PCs de reciente manufactura.
Lo admito, nunca fui muy fan de toda la “locura” por los widgets, pues generalmente no los utilizo mucho. Pero cuando me pasé al Windows Vista, decidí darles una segunda oportunidad. Claro que ciertas dudas de su verdadera funcionalidad me llevaron a quitarlo casi de inmediato. Pero luego de algunos días, empecé a extrañarlo, así que se me ocurrió probar otras opciones de sidebars, a ver si alguna me convencía

La diferencia más notoria, es el cambio de “look” que tiene. Lejos quedó la apariencia de “juguete” y el color blanco, para ser reemplazado por una barra que, bueno, se parece bastante a la de Windows Vista. Además, toma en consideración el color del wallpaper, y se integra correctamente a este.
Hay varios gadgets que han sido rediseñados para este propósito, diferenciándolos más entre sí para añadirles más utilidad. Añadirlos, también, es algo más rápido y fácil.
De momento, sólo la versión en inglés ha sido actualizada a este nuevo look y trae las mejoras mencionadas, así que deben descargar esa, si es que piensan actualizar.
