I love Google AJAX search API. I mean you can totally customize, but they also have easy and quick little wizards that you can use if you are not really comfortable "doing it yourself". It's an easy way to include current content on your page. You can use news, blogs, videos. I don't really make much use of the videos one because I don't like online videos. That's just me. I have made use of Google AJAX search on my seocontest site too. And with regards to the customization, well there is really no limit to what you can do, and even as beginner, which I am, it's easy because they provide you with great online guides, blogs, and code examples. Some people are really good and they take use this to build full online applications (not just as a little widget like me).
