Every moment of the body, every thought that we think, leaves such an impression on the mind-stuff, and even when such impressions are not obvious on the surface, they are sufficiently strong to work beneath the surface, subconsciously. What we are every moment is determines by the sum total of these impressions on the mind. [...]

Kevin O’Meara relished his natural good and generous nature. He liked smart, quick, Patti Carpenter just fine, but that was all. Still, because he liked her, he kindly cleared his schedule to help her older sister Jeanne and Jeanne’s little daughter start a new life after their loss. Under the awning outside his offices, he watched the sisters and the toddler cross the two streets and three small parking lots.
Patti was explaining to Jeanne about the suddenly perfect arrangements. The rental house that Kevin owned was walking distance from The Petite Academy, the best pre-school in the state. “It’s got three bedrooms and a nice big yard. Kevin has a three-month trial lease, no deposit, no extras, ready for you to sign. Wait till you see it, Jeanne. $200 a month. And, Kevin’s wife even knows a college girl who’ll sleep over with Colette while you work.”
Jeanne smiled t

Once, long ago after playing Jr. High football for two weeks– a sport about which I cared little and for which I was just about in every way unsuited–, after suffering through hot afternoon of severe hay fever on the football fields, after two week of staying up to midnight to finish my homework only to wake at 6:30 for school, after this I walked into the football coach’s testosterone sweat stench soaked office and quit the team. I do not remember how long he kept me in that office berating me, telling me it is not my choice anyway but instead is my dad’s decision, and pontificating upon the grand virtues of football. Football makes a man a man. Football teaches you honor, teamwork and integrity. Football… Football… You’d think the whole of western civilization rested upon its strong shoulders.
To that coach, I say, in the words of the prophet, “Kiss this.”

Mashable is one of my favorite sites. In addition to ehealth, I have a deep interest in the evolution of the "social Web" and its use to bridge the differences that keep people apart (though to be fair, I also have a deep interest - and fear - of the Web's ability to isolate people and monopolize time better spent on "real" things). When I saw the headline PeopleJam gets Funded for Health Social Network on my RSS feed this afternoon, I was excited as I assumed I'd find a post from Pete Cashmore shoring up my argument from yesterday that health-related social networking sites are the Next Big Thing. How wrong I was!PeopleJam, an LA-based social network for health and lifestyle, has been funded by Bob Pittman’s fund and TiVo CEO Tom Rogers. It’s a place to share life experiences and goals, and will add unique video content from experts in topics like relationships and spirituality. Sounds like every women-focused health social network out there, but we’ll give it time.Excuse me, bu
When it comes to great website design, the cliché of what a woman wants in a man comes to mind. It's ironic how the idealistic attributes of a good man are similar to those of a great website. You could even say that, what makes up a good man, is what will make your website great. I discovered that these points don't only pertain to designing a website for women, they should be considered whenever creating a website in general. This is definitely a valuable resource you won't want to miss.If you follow these points, your website design will not fail.Mysterious.Women like their men to be mysterious, but not in a "I'm a spy, can't say a word" type of way. When women say mysterious, they really mean quiet for most of the time. Like your website visitors, women don't want to sit and listen to you go on and on about your pet goldfish (unless, of course, your website is all about your goldfish). Your website should be mysterious by limiting the use of words and, instead, showing more ac
Earlier this year I was interviewed for a job by an organisation whose identity I cannot reveal due to the secret nature of the organisation. Let’s just say that the first letter of the organisation’s abbreviated name is M, which probably stands for something like “military”, and the second letter is I, which likely stands for something along the lines of, ooh, a synonym for “cleverness”. The final part of the organisation’s name is located after 4 and before 6 in the numerical alphabet.Surprisingly, I had found myself applying for a position with this organisation. Due to the highly secretive nature of the position within the highly secretive organisation, I cannot reveal its title. But if one were to take the full word denoted by the second letter of the organisation’s name and add it before the words “police officer” with the word “police” removed, the secret title of the highly secretive position would present itself. There was a five-stage interview process:
Brandon McGuire wrote the following story for a submission into the Virginia Outdoor Writers Association Youth Essay Contest! I could not be more proud of him! 17 years old and more mature then people I know who are going into their 30's! GOOD JOB BUDDY!!!I remember that hunt very well because that is the day I knew I would be hunting with Brandon for the rest of my life!Power line Legacyby Brandon McGuireNot having a father figure in my life while being raised in a single parent home by my mother made it hard sometimes and I had to learn the qualities of a man from watching other parents and examples in the community. I have been fortunate to have had several men step into my life to be role models. While attending a JAKES day event with my mother we crossed paths with Kevin Paulson. He offered to take me hunting and from then on our relationship grew. He has been able to teach me how to hunt ethically and still have an exciting time. Two years ago I was able to go hunting with Kevi
“There is no man so good that if he placed all his actions and thoughts under the scrutiny of the laws, he would not deserve hanging ten times in his life.”Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533 – 92) French essayist
Is there anything to be said for being a good man? Last night I sat with a couple of people and a conversation about marriage started. My wife went on and on about what a good guy I am, and how lucky she is to be married to me, etc, etc, etc. In that moment I realized that I have officially been domesticated! As my wife spoke I began to flash back, and as the memories flooded my brain I was humbled by the reality of who I am. My wife only knows me a man who has learned how to love; she never experienced the man that I was only a couple of years before our marriage. An angry man, a violent man, a manipulator, arrogant, shallow, self-absorbed, and so on. She never knew me as the man who was paid to intimidate, and physically hurt people. She never knew me as the arrogant young man who went through women like socks. She has never seen the capacity of my rage. My wife knows a man who doesn't speak much anymore and who has learned the value of family, compassion, and a gentle spirit. What
