      Gone fishing
It is 5:30 am and we are getting ready to meet up with everyone at Estel's for breakfast before we go fishing with Peter Graniel.Fishing was great - caught loads of snapper. There were 6 of us fishing so we had 4 on at a time and did the catch 3 fish and pass your rod on rule. Today I practiced taking the fish off the hook - it can be a bit tricky as the fins are sharp. When Peter and Lionel started cleaning the fish, a nurse shark came around to have a bite to eat.We are all going to meet up again later to enjoy fresh fish bbq at Dick and Carole's.Side note - today is first day of rainy season, so make sure to have your wet gear handy.Heading for Peter's boatFixer upper with waterfront viewCapt Jeff caught a big oneGray skies - fishing was greatPaul got a bitePeter G doing filletsCaught s

I am not a social person before midday - EVER! Two fishermen arrived at the hostel and we were driven an hour out of town to a quiet beach. The maté drink (packed with caffeine) was the only saving grace.Photo: Traditional Maté DrinkMyself and the wee bro probably wouldn't be considered the most hardy fisherman types, but since our guides were kitted out in several layers of fleece, rain gear and hats and we only had very light layers, we knew we were in for a cold ride. Truth be told, as soon as we were out on the beach it was 'freeze the ba

      Gone Fishing
Ok, so I was gone a little longer than a week. What can I say, huh? Life happens. :) I have had the most wonderful couple of weeks! On the 2nd, I told you that we were going on vacation to Universal Studios and Disneyland. We had so much fun, and it was great to spend time together as a family with no work, no schoolwork, no cleaning, and all that stuff! Our biggest decision was what park to go to, and what rides to ride when we got there. We did end up going to Knott's Berry Farm instead of Disneyland for a second day, though, and that was a good decision. We stayed in a hotel on the beach, and had the greatest view of the sunset on the nights we were back before sundown! Watching the sun go down, with the ocean in the foreground from our hotel room was just so amazing! Each

Ryan Newman has a new edition of his weekly “Hello, Newman” column out on Yahoo!. You probably think it’s about Bristol. NOPE. It’s all about fishing. Gone Fishing
I wish I really was fishing like Marja and her husband. But instead, I'm fishing in my mind. I need to take off a few days to finish my manuscript and rest.I'm offline until Monday. I won't be blogging or reading other blogs as well. I need to write and spend the rest of my time outdoors. As you know, for the last few weeks, I'm been somewhat hypomanic and although I've controlled my behavior so that there aren't any obvious symptoms, I'm exhausted nonetheless. The good news is that it's amazing how much I can accomplish during a hypomania. I wonder how many other people tend to "clean" when they have a lot of energy. I don't just mean straightening up the house. Rather, I mean going through closets and storage and doing major cleaning. Thus far I've filled the trunk of my mini-van twice and am carting stuff away to the Salvation Army.I also wonder how many people change their diet during hypomanias. Sometimes, I have this tremendous need for "red meat." But other times

This Norman Rockwell painting is one of my favorites. I'm feeling a bit tired and somehow just looking at it makes me smile. I only wish that I lived on a lake, owned a small boat, and could nap with my two dogs in the sun under an umbrella. Alas...Still, I'm taking a few days off from blogging. I'll be back on Monday. See you then!P.S. I just received my monthly newsletter from ProBlogger. I particularly liked the article entitled "How Not To Become a Grumpy Blogger."

      Gone Fishing At Shaver Lake
Remember the days when a shop owner used to put up the sign "Gone Fishing" when he needed some good old fashioned R & R? Somehow those two words always conjure up in my imagination a lazy summer day, sitting by a serene, peaceful lake, away from life's everyday routines and stress. Shop owner or not, we all need this escape now more than ever in order to stay sane in today's busy world with its overload of "new" technology. Let's just get back to the basics and stay in a rustic cabin by a lake with no cell phone, no computer, no TV, no traffic! Just peace and quiet. There are many such fishing cabins in the United States, but the one we are going to feature today is Shaver Lake. Find some Shaver Lake Cabin Rentals. I have heard via the grapevine, that Shaver Lake California is one of the most popular lakes within the Sierra National Forest. Not only is it a great lake for fishing, but for the outdoor enthusiast, the area offers hiking, backpacking, camping, mountain biking, kayakin

Rancho Capistrano Part 3 (Gone Fishing)
On day two of training, our first exercise in the morning was "Gone Fishing". We were asked to wear long pants and tennis shoes the evening before so the stage was set for some physical activity. The instructor told us he was here at 6:30 am setting up our exercise. We walked down to the scary-looking climbing tower to see our fate. Up on the pole, a long rope was tied on about 15 feet up. Another robe laid out on the ground in a concentric arc about 15 feet away, delineating the swamp. Various objects were placed inside, three stacking rings, the stacking tree, a Big Bird which topped the stacker, another stuffed bird, a toy horse, and a fish. The goal was to get all the objects out of the swamp and into a bag. The rings and the stacker were stationary, but the animals could move around and of course any bird (including Big Bird) could fly. The stacker had to be stacked with the Big Bird attached. Everyone going in had to be blindfolded. Half of the people could walk in tet

      Gone Fishing
I couldn't wait to get out on the rocks just above the river where I had plenty of line to cast out into the rapids waiting for the big daddy Chinook salmon to go swimming by. I thought I would bring hobo Earl with me to the river for the day He really don't believe that the Chinook salmon that swims by every once in awhile is as big as I say they are. I even showed him the article with the picture of the salmon in the left column but he still didn't believe it until he seen it fer himself . Some times Old timers can be that way I guess. Pretty soon the guys across the river caught a fish and the fight was on for just a couple of minutes anyway until they realized it was a sucker fish that live on the river bottom. Sometimes you just have to spend your time on the river waiting but the time will come when they hit and when it happens you best be ready cause there's going to be an explosion of action as fast as I can say bingo. Earl has walked up the river it seems like he

I am sorry to say this will be the last post I will write on my blog Old Cape Cod because I am in the process of moving and will start another blog with a new name very shortly. I will be all moved in my new place by the 1st of July and I will be back with a new post as soon as I am settled in. My wife and I felt it was time to move back closer to our roots and be around family and friends and it will also be more affordable. I know we will miss the Cape after living here 11 years but we have a lot of good memories and will always come back to visit. I am still thinking of what the name of my new blog will be and looking forward to getting it going, in the meantime I will share these photos of some good spots for fishing and also leave you with a link to click at the top of the page. Just click on the Title Gone Fishing and check out another really good restaurant you may want to try named Anthony's Cummaquid. I hope when I begin my next post ev
