Goldman Sachs Says Risk Grows For 2008 Recession
Earlier today, Goldman Sachs economists announced that they expect the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee to cut interest rates to 3% from the current rate, which stands at 4.5%. According to Bloomberg, Goldman is predicting interest rates will bottom out at 3% in the next 6 to 9 months because “the worsening housing downturn has pushed the risk of a U.S. recession in 2008 to 40%-45%, from around 30% previously.” The new target replaces an earlier forecast of 4% by the New York City-based global investment bank. In addition, Goldman Sachs is forecasting that the unemployment rate is likely to rise from the current rate of 4.7% to 5.5% by the end of 2008. According to Reuters today, Goldman predicts that U.S. gross domestic product growth will be “well below trend” for an extended period of time, even without an outright contraction. Share This

      What about Goldman Sachs?
An avid reader recently asked MarketMatador.com what investors should do about Goldman Sachs (GS) awful slide from grace. There is no simple response as in Buy, Sell, or Hold. Goldman Sachs has clearly been affected by the credit jitters on Wall Street. Goldman has continued to devote more cash to investments in a variety of their portfolios, but the market for bank stocks is continuing to pummel share prices. As personal investors in Goldman Sachs, MarketMatador.com has felt the struggle and pains of many, while the wrestle for market control continues. Investors should understand that simply holding any bank stocks could be more detrimental to portfolio returns than selling and paying the commission. It’s been years since the divdends and P/Es of bank stocks looked so appealing, but it isn’t time for investors to devote cash to stocks in that sector. The appeal of these stocks is simply a mirage inside a market that could potentially cause stocks like Citigroup (C) and B

      Disgusting Selloff @ Goldman Sachs
As the entire banking and trading industry goes under fire because of stress in mortgages, many companies are becoming unreasonably cheap. Despite a major run-up and rally in Wall Street to 14,000 on the Dow, the banking stocks have suffered tremendously. Goldman Sachs (GS) is down yet another $6.33 per share today, close to 3 percent! At these levels, GS is under 10x price to earnings, with a tremendous growth outlook ahead. Selloffs in the stock should be treated as prime buying opportunities. Disclosure: Long Goldman Sachs (GS)

EUROPE: Goldman Sachs warns oil could reach $95
The key Middle Eastern members of oil cartel OPEC are under pressure for an increase in production after a warning from Goldman Sachs that prices could hit a peak of $95 a barrel by the end of the year. Goldman Sachs said in a research note oil prices could reach $90 a barrel this autumn and $95 a barrel by the end of the year if the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries does not ease production cuts that have helped tighten global markets. But OPEC says world oil demand next year will grow moderately while supply from rival producers will expand, reducing the need for crude from the producer group.Today oil prices were little changed at near record highs in Asian trade as the market waited for the release of a weekly US report on energy stockpiles. New York's main contract, light sweet crude for August delivery, was four cents higher at $74.19 a barrel from $74.15 in late US trades last night. Brent North Sea crude for September was two cents higher at $76.31. Oil p

Do you want to get into Goldman Sachs?
Hi all…I found this article on getting into Goldman Sachs. By the way, my professional specialization is management consulting for the financial services industry….so my life’s not only about slimming down and making money online…hahah and…I hope that makes me less bimbo-ish? hahaAnyway, for those who are fascinated about Goldman Sachs as “The Firm” to get into…the article below may prove useful to you :)====================================================Want to land a job at ‘The Firm’? Here’s how, by those who’ve done it before.1) Interview again and again (and again)Most front-office banking jobs involve a handful of interviews. Jobs at Goldman involve a dumper-truck full. We spoke to one former executive director at the bank, who joined as an associate back in the late 1990s. He had 47 interviews for the role.“Back in those days, there was a real feeling that hiring by consensus was the way to go,” he says. “Two people tried to veto me and I had to re

Goldman Sachs allays fears of china bubble economy
From CCTVBEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs has allayed fears that China could emulate Japan's 1980s bubble economy in a new report.China's stock market saw a whopping rise of 130 percent last year, land prices have surged in the past five years and the currency keeps going up.These factors have raised widespread debate over whether China's economy is overheating and developing a bubble like Japan in the 1980s, especially in the stock market.Baidu, China's biggest search engine, lists 678,000 web pages discussing whether the country's economy is overheating.A survey by the central bank last year showed 42 percent of Chinese bankers believed the economy was overheating or tending to overheat.Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, warned that the bubble was developing in the stock market last month. However, the Goldman Sachs report said, "China now and Japan then share a few macro similarities, but a more

Goldman Sachs (GS)
It's either going to be a great day, or horrible day tomorrow. Goldman Sachs (GS) will post earnings before the bell. What's good or bad for Goldman will be good or bad for the stock market. Today the S&P rebounded back up to about that 38% Fibonacci retracement/resistance level again basis the S&P 500. Good GS numbers and reaction tomorrow would certainly vault the market on a journey toward 50%

Contrarian Approach Tells Me to go Long Amazon and Short Goldman Sachs
I have been shorting Amazon for a long time and have lost my shirt on it. But everyone hates it, which leads me to believe the stock will not be going down anytime soon. On the other hand, everyone think GS is cheap and will go up. I wonder if the stock will go up much from here considering everyone is already bullish on this stock. Leaves me with more questions than answers.
