Miss Whoopi wears a Siriano original to the Tony Awards:
Not bad.
We don't LOVELOVELOVE the dress, but it's appropriate for her. Whoopi always did make some questionable wardrobe choices, so this is definitely a winner based on past performance. The black is flattering to her, the ruffles aren't overdone, and for once, she gets to show off her legs.
It's not the best we've ever seen from

I want to send out congratulations to my alma mater Purdue University on winning the 21st annual national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. This is Purdue's third win in the last 4 years. This years task was to assemble a hamburger consisting of no less than one precooked meat patty, two vegetables and two condiments, sandwiched between two bun halves. The 17-member Purdue team used 156 steps in its machine, which had a global travel theme. The machine's journey started at Purdue and continued around the world to England, France, Germany, China, Mexico and ended back at a tailgating party at Purdue, where the hamburger was made.via purduenews
We've brought you Rube Goldberg-style clocks and toys, but none of them are a match for the 156-step device that's just won the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. This year's challenge was to assemble a burger with vegetables, condiments and two bun halves. The meat was pre-cooked... a sensible idea to avoid fires and explosions: you'll understand when you look at the great pics of the machines that MAKE took. Beneath the gallery you'll find a demo video of some of them in action. Sadly we don't have one of the complete 156-step run yet, so you'll just have to imagine its fantasticness.
The whole idea is to create a machine that combines creative thinking with complexity in design, and, most importantly, inefficiency— much in the vein of Goldberg's cartoons.
The winning team,

The folks at the National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest 2008 have clearly taken things to another level, and while the ingenuity is evident, the commitment to aesthetic excellence is what really makes this event a winner. In his Evolution of Religious Bigotry article on Fitna, the Dutch anti-Koran movie, and people who place Darwin fish symbols on their cars, Jonah Goldberg makes two points:
1. That it's rude for people to put anti-anything symbols on their cars.
2. That people who do so are cowardly because they'd never offend the religion whose adherents would actually harm them, and hypocritical because they condemn the nice religion.
Some thoughts:
1. I always thought the Darwin fish were in bad taste and hypocritical as well as an unnecessary disturber of the public peace. The Christian fish itself is inoffensive- a positive message that only implies that non-believers will go to Hell. People who'd use the Darwin bumper sticker (I know such people.) would counter that Christianity is a wort

I'm always fascinated by kinetic sculptures, which is why I like this clock by painter and sculptor George Rhodes. You tell the hours from the numbered cylinders that're picked up on that wheel, and the minutes from the pointer arm. It strikes the hours when the cylinder rolls down the track and hits a bell. I'd love to see it in action, but since it's a limited edition of 50, costing $4,000 there's not much chance of that. If you do bag one of these 17 pound creations though, it's signed by the artist himself. [George Rhodes via BBGadgets]

I've never heard anyone play Bach with more feeling than Glen Gould. [the following is a quotation from his biography at www.sonyclassical.com:] In 1981 Gould departed from his custom of not rerecording a work and, twenty-six years after his first recording of the Goldberg Variations, went into the same New York studio for his second recording of the work with which he had become so closely identified. Gould viewed the two interpretations as substantially different because he came to see the variations not as separate and distinct exercises but as belonging to a larger whole, with one rhythmic pulse, harmony and ideology underlying the entire work and forming a definite unity of composition. Always acutely aware of the possibilities technology offers, Gould was also motivated in his decis

Comic legend Mel Brooks dropped the Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg from the 1991 movie Life Stinks because then he would have to kiss her on screen.
Brooks was in New York promoting his new play Young Frankenstein when he related the Goldberg story,a website reported.
Apparently, his co-writer Rudy De Luca had said, "She’s funny, she’s sassy -- she may be perfect for the role."
Goldberg’s response:
The other blogger who contributed to a candidate quit before we could ask her not to write about that campaign. But our error here was paying people in ther first place. That’s what caused the problem. Not the blogging — the paying. When we resurrect this, we will not have financial ties to the bloggers. As for the complaint, sure he complained. He also complained about the story we did on his finances (and other local elected officials’ finances) last weekend. So what? We hear complaints from officials we cover all the time. Sometimes they have a point. Sometimes we agree to disagree. But our decisions are our own.
Any my response:
Why do you think paying bloggers caused the problems? I can see how it would be a problem if a politician gave money to one of your staff, but I don’t see the conflict of interest in your staff giving money to a campaign. Do you prohibit your journalists from contributing to political campaigns? I resp

Steve Golberg & The Arch EnemiesGenre: Indie / Pop / RockFrom: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania United StatesFrom deep in the bowels of a secret recording studio somewhere on planet earth, Steve Goldberg with his merry band of orchestral mercenaries and every possible symphonic instrument known to man (and some that probably haven't even been invented yet) has produced an elaborately orchestrated pop masterpiece. In the wrong hands this could easily have turned into the sort of overblown sugary mush that rots the brain and drives fully grown adults to reach for the revolver. Not so with monsieur Goldberg who manages to coral his Arch Enemies and their multitude of instruments into a tight set of literate pop songs akin to Sufjan Stevens covering the collected works of They Might Be Giants or a rock opera about the life and times of XTC written and performed by Stephen Merritt. All of which is topped off by an intelligent and unique approach to the rhyming couplet as evidenced by rhyming o

I could have written Crazies to the Left of me, Wimps to the Right: How One Side Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve (CLMWR) instead of Bernard Goldberg and I don’t say that to compliment myself. I’m just pointing out that CLMWR reads more like a series of good blog posts than a cohesive book let alone one with any kind of depth or originality. Indeed, if you’re a conservative who listens to talk radio or reads the occasional blog, you’ve heard it all before. Raise your hand if you’re unaware that:
1. Liberals patronize minorities and come down with a case of the self-righteous vapors when they broach the topic of race.
2. Liberals are elitists.
3. Affirmative action is hypocritical.
4. Liberals blindly deemphasize the war on terror while foolishly worry about the non-problem of global warming.
5. Not profiling Muslims at the airport is dangerous PC-nonsense.
6. The liberal media is biased.
7. College professors are biased.
8. Actors are
There has been an empty seat amongst the ladies of The View “and it will be a tough seat to fill” an ABC insider tells Star magazine. This decade long talk show lost Star Jones last season and now her replacement Rosie O’Donnell. O’Donnell made her exit on May 23, 2007. And now the question is - who will replace the outspoken O’Donnell this fall? Looks like the new host of “The View” is going to be Whoopi Goldberg.
“As far as everyone at ABC is concerned, she has the job. They have been meeting with Kathy Griffin, Roseanne Barr, Ricki Lake and Gayle King. While Kathy was a strong contender, Whoopi has won everyone over. Everyone is acting like Whoopi already has the gig,” the show insider says. “Whoopi has a radio show, she lives in NYC and she is an institution there. She also is liberal and outspoken but not crazy like Rosie was. She will be a perfect fit as far as the ladies on The View are concerned. Nothing has been officially a

"Lesser mortals might have trouble sleeping at night knowing that they're having the time of their lives through a level of dishonesty dwarfing the transgressions that may send Scooter Libby to prison. Nitpicker:
Dear Jonah,
You’ve made it clear that you do not intend to pay off the $1000 wager you made with Juan Cole two years ago. You told Editor and Publisher that Jeff Cohen, founder of the Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, (and, presumably, the rest of the bloggers who’ve been bugging you about the bet) know that “Cole never took the bet, but he’s trying to muddy the waters. Indeed, I’ve admitted that Cole would have won. I’ve written that the Iraq War was a mistake.” And you have. Kudos (although I think your statement before the war that “The United States needs to go to war with Iraq because it needs to go to war with someone in the region and Iraq makes the most sense” demands something more than a simple apology. A year in a hairshirt, perhaps? Six months as a lunch lady at the Camp Anaconda chow hall? People are, after all, dying over there.)
Still, you’re right that Cole didn’t officially take the bet,
Well I finally found time to watch the video of CEO Jason Goldberg, who gave a keynote address at ERExpo in Hollywood just over a week ago.
The presentation is quite long just over 40 minutes, but is certainly worth taking time out to watch if you want to get an angle on web 2.0. What I particularly got out of his presentation apart from his passion for Jobster and social networking, was the way he explained how the web has changed and how blogs, social networks, Myspace, tags etc affect us within recruitment, I do not think it could have been explained better.
The second half of the presentation is Jason’s pitch for Jobster, which if it is something you are considering then this will probably be best pitch you will ever get. For me it really helped me get an angle on what Jobster is all about and how to really find those high quality candidates you are looking for.
Having now reflected on what Jason said it finally hit home, talented people know talented people and experts mi
