Some commentators call the global economic crisis the lucky break which made it possible for Barack Obama to win the US elections. Gerard Baker writes for the TimesOnline: “The financial gale that has blown through the American landscape in the past month has upended the presidential race, ripped the roof off John McCain’s Straight Talk [...]

Well this morning started with the stock market crashing again because an announcement was being made that growth dropped in the last quarter. This means the UK is now halfway to an official recession.
Plus Greenspan has now conceded that he may have made a mistake about the economy and the effectiveness of the free market ideology.

Last week's gloom turned into euphoria as investors sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 11%, the biggest one-day gain since 1933. It was the fifth-largest percentage gain ever, and it came immediately after an 18% weekly decline, the worst such drop in the Dow's 112-year history.

Small business is in a good position right now because we must always manage our cash flow closely and look for inefficiencies. When we don't, the doors close. Enough Already!OK. I think that we have established that there are some big problems out there, and today is going to be very interesting. But you know what? At the end of the day what happens to Lehman and AIG and everyone else does not in actuality put food on my table and send my kids to college. We will revisit the situation of course since it is going to be extremely dynamic and course setting
Actually, this just proves my suspicion, that there are buyers out there, ready, willing and able to do the deal (how many will close escrow may have to wait for another blog entry). Since the stupid deals (which accounted for about 70% of transactions over the past five years, according to um, an expert, i.e., me) are gone, in their place are home sales that make sense. Still, many buyers conti

OK not really...there are many survival blogs I absolutely enjoy reading. Many are a fantastic mix of doom and gloom and useful information (one fine example of this type of mix is Mayberry - he does a nice job of mixing it up - highly recommend you make him a daily read). Some are all doom and gloom which is fun to read but not very helpful otherwise (at least to me anyways).

When I received the first evaluation of my son, I was a little gloomy. I remember three things distinctly. Firstly, it started off well enough with something like ‘he is a good looking happy faced child……’ ahhh……but then went downhill at a rapid pace. What followed was a laundry list of deficits. Truth be told, it doesn’t matter what euphemisms they use, deficits equates to ‘bit
Well my beloved Reading were relegated yesterday. It was no surprise. Back in March we looked certain to stay up after three great wins but then going 6 games without scoring a goal, coupled with the sudden resurgence of some of our nearest rivals, it wasn't looking good even before a ball was kicked this weekend. I've decided to take the glass half view though. Here's why:1) We'll be in a league

I think I've got the flu - aches, pains, shivers, sweating, high temperature, tiredness, lack of energy... and that's just my eyeballs. What makes it worse is that I'm on morning chorus duty all this month! I have to get up at 5am each morning when it's dark, wet and cold. We were all so depressed this morning we sang a dirge. The gloomy morning light even caused me to have a fight with my own reflection yesterday, veryembarrassing, especially as the reflection won! Daylight saving ends this weekend so maybe things will improve with the lighter mornings.
While much of the media and the financial crystal ball gazers are predicting the U.S. will go to "Hell in a Handbasket", there are some signs that responsible people in government and business are trying to turn things around. Most market watching spectators are standing around with their fingers up their butt whistling Dixie. "What tune will we be whistling next," they ask?Fortunately, there are U.S. business men and others that are competent at what they do and willing to take calculated risks:Last year, 41 per cent of venture capital invested in Canada – and 53 per cent in Ontario – came from the U.S., making our potential gazelles increasingly dependent on foreign capital.Nice to see General
First off, hope everyone is having a good weekend and we are only less than eight days from real baseball. It's obvious that the Baltimore Orioles will have their 11th losing season, and parts of the season, will be frankly painful -- let's keep in the mind changes made.Second, we finally have started to rebuild -- something that needed to be done long ago. …..Nobody’s ready to declare that the Las Vegas housing market has reached bottom, but some real estate experts are convinced the floor is at least being established……
Uncle Jack Is One Of Them.
The fundamentals of Las Vegas are still excellent, with low unemployment, excellent tourist counts, homes that can be bought once again at 2005 prices. The only thing we need now is loan programs for people with no money or with only fair to good credit scores, which is our typical working family.
I have a long list of buyers who want to move back to the middle of town, and get emails and phone calls from people everyday who are interested in the new Vintage Vegas Urbanism. Many of them need to sell first, either in the suburbs, or in the town their coming from. Lots of them have decent to great credit, but no money for a
Fears over the state of the UK housing market are on the rise, prompted by the announcement from the British Bankers' Association that mortgage approvals for September fell 14% compared to August.Total mortgage approvals for the month of September 2007 for BBA members were tallied at 52,685, significantly down on the 61,051 recorded in August, and weighing in at 27% lower than the same month last year. Indeed, the number of September approvals was at its lowest since 2000. Much importance is placed on the number of UK mortgages advanced in a month as they are a key indicator of the state of the market; a decline suggests that house prices will soon follow the downward trend. The director of statistics for the BBA, David Dooks said: "Lower amounts of new mortgage lending combined with fewer approved house purchase loans signal a weaker outlook for the mortgage market, especially if loan supply is reduced following the recent financial market difficulties and costs of borrowing remain
In my September 20 post, I talked about how Yale economics professor Robert Shiller had recently appeared on CNBC and told Maria Bartiromo that U.S. home values could decline 50% in cities that have boomed a lot in real inflation-corrected terms. He suspected that the fall in prices would take place over a number of years, and that likely areas to feel the brunt of the decline would include California, Arizona, and Florida (Miami).
Back on October 29, I talked about how the Associated Press was reporting that many private economists were forecasting U.S. home prices would fall by around 10% before bottoming out in late 2008. David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor’s, predicted that prices would decline by 11%. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, envisioned that median existing home prices would fall 10.4% (while using the same methodology as the National Association of Realtors). These gloomy forecasts were made in the wake of an American housing boom tha
I would be off my game if I didn't at least mention the very important, some would say shocking, announcement Ed Stelmach made announcing that, yes, Alberta will increase oil sands royalties by January 1, 2009.The increases mean that the money Alberta collects from the energy business could be a staggering 20% higher than the original forecast for 2010, which would equate to a $1.4-billion increase into the province's treasury. What started it all?A report by Alberta's provincial panel said royalties had not kept pace with world energy markets, that all projects in the booming oil rich region should be paying more. "Albertans do not receive their fair share from energy development.""The energy industry has been a phenomenal driver," "It not only affects Alberta ... It's going to set the direction for where this industry goes and where Alberta goes the next five to 10 years." Greg Stringham, vice president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum ProducersAlberta has been negativel
I’ve thought of the ultimate Halloween costume this year. Imagine dressing up as a ‘sub-prime mortgage meltdown’ and banging on doors trick or treating throughout the U.S. I’m sure that this would be one of the scariest costumes folks have seen in awhile. Like many fears, once exposed, explained and understood they lose their bite…. Well in Canada anyway. The sub-prime mortgage situation definitely has a wide arc and the ripple that it affects include; U.S. borrowers resulting in higher foreclosures, tighter lending criteria and potentially higher rates for commercial property buyers, credit card debtors, home builders, discount and luxury retailers, stock markets, industries such as metals and mining, hedge and mutual funds, currencies, Northern Rock in the U.K. and....You get the point. But this is the result of damage control instigated over a year ago. Despite all of the media gloom, there are many regional real estate markets in the U.S. that continue to perform well and
The pounding rythm of the rain suddenly woke me from my seemingly dreamless sleep. Dark clouds hovering the skies just mirrored the rising pain in my heart. Then familiar waves of raw emotions again...

If you knew me IRL outside of this blog, and someone asked you what kind of person I am, you would likely say that Shelli is a positive person. Anytime I am met with road blocks or negativity, I find a way around it and end up usually smiling in the end.I've always been a person that embraces the concept of karma and if I put positive energy out into the world, positive energy will come back tenfold. This is the rule I live by, and for 39 years, it served me well.If you are a regular reader, you'll remember I proclaimed 2006 "the bad luck" year. I started 2007 with hope abound. I think I actually said 2007 would be "my" year. Of course, looking back 2007 is turning out to be the most challenging year I have ever had thus far. In my personal life, my work life, my relationships, finances. So, I slipped into a somewhat negative state in the last couple months. I admit it. I've been that person I used to hate most.... playing the tiny violin.... shouting at the Gods, "why meeeeeeee?"...

With its 14 tracks totaling just less than half an hour, the album feels almost more like an EP than proper full-length, yet, musically speaking, it brought enough creative heft not only to establish the group's inscrutable science- and primate-based lyrical preoccupations, but to determine the blueprint for hard/soft sonic extremes to be further played out on subsequent efforts. As such, violent metalcore bursts like "Afraid Of" and "Vipers" come interspersed with equal measure
Consumer confidence is down. Home sales are declining. Inventories of unsold homes are at record highs. Realtors are depressed and so are their earnings.
This makes no sense to me.
Here’s why. The forecasts that I have seen for home sales say that roughly 5.9 million homes will be sold this year. It’s down from 6.4 million homes last year. So the real estate world is going to hell in a hand basket because only 5.9 million homes will be sold? I don’t think so.
The strategic challenges for you are these:
To develop an effective marketing plan to make sure you get your share of listings.
To educate your sellers to bring their expectations in line with the current reality of the market (that applies to pricing and time on market).
And to strengthen and broaden your marketing approaches to selling listings – especially everything having to do with the Internet.
As a Realtor® it is critically important that you understand that you must live and thrive in two worlds, the age 45 an
The Baltimore Orioles are in a real bad position. With six losses and a season pretty much on the brink, the Orioles had a chance to win last night thanks to the masterful pitching of Erik Bedard. Well, then the same script that has been played over and over again reared its ugly head. The bullpen lost the game – again. We all know the aftermath, and I covered the game live for Oriole Magic last night in Baltimore. The Orioles lost 7-3 to the Diamondbacks, as Bedard pitched seven great innings, then the bullpen implosion led by Chad Bradford, and then Todd Williams set off the grenades. Afterwards, Danys Baez added more fuel to the fire by giving up a 2-run home run to diminutive Augie Ojeda. What is happening to the Orioles is unbelievable. Are we in a bad funk – perhaps. I think it's more than that... I have no idea; however, the offense is still putrid and the high-dollar bullpen is looking like a bust. I’m sure the players are beyond frustrated, but t
This is my entry in Nathaniel's Action Heroine Blog-a-Thon. Being the massive Jolie fangirl that I am, I jumped at the chance to write about what makes her so damn watchable as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, despite the fact that the film itself is awful. (I'm not even going to touch the sequel; it was even worse than the original, if you can believe that.)
And yet, whenever Tomb Raider appeared on cable in the early '00s, I'd watch it. What drew me in? It wasn't the clever plot. It wasn't the razor-sharp dialogue. It wasn't the breathless sense of excitement or tension. It wasn't the special effects. No, it was something more dazzling than all of the above put together.
Angelina Jolie's smile. It takes a little bit to get to that smile. In fact, the film seems determined to focus on Lara Croft as "hott killing mo-sheen" at first. (Which is part of my problem with the whole game series. I have never played a Tomb Raider game because of their Lara-leering obsession, and d
ALASTAIR Cook scored his fifth hundred in 15 matches to guide England to 3-200 in the first Test with West Indies at Lord's today (AEST).
The Essex opening batsman, 22, who had been at the crease for more than four hours after England lost the toss in bowler-friendly conditions. was 102 not out when bad light ended play on the opening day of the four-match series.
Cook, not included in England's World Cup squad, batted with the calm assurance that has been a hallmark of his brief international career, his century off 162 balls with nine boundaries.
It is the left hander's second at Lord's having made 105 against Pakistan last year.
All rounder Paul Collingwood is unbeaten on 21 after the weather ensured only 56 of the day's scheduled 90 overs were bowled.
Fast bowler Daren Powell, who brought West Indies back into the game with two wickets after lunch, led the attack with 2-52 off 18 overs.
Asked if it was his best innings for England, Cook said: "It's the one

Although I have mentioned in a couple of other posts that there are going to be some changes in the next few years I want to make it plain that I am not a "DOOM and GLOOM" person. Not at all. Yes, some of the changes will be intense and may make day to day life uncomfortable, but I have absolute confidence in the human race.No matter how difficult things may get we will prevail. It's the way we are and one of the reasons we were put on this earth...to gain spiritual experience in difficult situations. We all have much to learn and learn we will. Some of us may fight the lessons tooth and nail but we will still get to the finish line. Maybe a bit tattered, but still whole. How could it be otherwise since we are all creations of God! Each and every one of us!Live life joyfully.
In order to keep in touch with what bears are focusing on these days, I've limited the following ramblings to only bearish news:From what I can tell, the impending subprime meltdown may well cause plague, pestilence, and the heartbreak of psoriasis for the entire US population. This story is not going away any time soon...Looking for proof that it is way too late for anyone to do anything about the subprime mess? The Senate will be holding a hearing on the issue this week! Nothing confirms that the horse is already out of the barn more than our fine elected representatives beginning to talk about a problem.Feeling a little too bullish today? Jim Rogers can help fix that with his vivid apocalyptic vision of what it will look like when the real estate bubble bursts. Given that I live in a housing market that hasn't appreciated a whole lot since Reagan was in office, I haven't lost any sleep worrying about the inevitable bursting of the housing bubble. That said, I do agree with Rogers
Well, I just got done reading an insightful article by the Washington Times’ Thom Loverro about the state of the Washington Nationals versus the Baltimore Orioles titled, ‘Orioles Ugliness Won’t End’. Long story short, he asserts though the Nationals may be bad in 2007, they have a bright future thanks to the track record of Team President Stan Kasten & owners Ted Lerner along with his family who have made a considerable fortune in real estate. Sadly, Loverro does not hold the Orioles in the same esteem. “ Sometimes you have to believe what you see. And the more both teams are seen as spring training continues, fans will see how uncertain the 2007 Nationals roster is. Meanwhile, the Orioles appear to have perhaps the best team they have been for quite some time. … "This is talent wise, a better team than any we have before in the six years I've been here," Gibbons said. Well, take heart Nationals fans. Where is all the talent is going to get the Orioles? Zip
Dear MS-ians,In addition to Melanie’s post (STPM Blues), she has raised several issues that I think we can all have a serious thought about. The debate of Arts & Science has always been seemingly endless. This question ponders on us even more so at different stages of our education, normally after PMR, SPM and STPM. Here i shall not argue on this as it’s subjective up to a point by making comparisons between the two or debate which is better. However I find it interesting to understand the fundamental incitement behind this argument as it repeats its cycle year after year.1) The indecisive- usThere are just too many factors that could affect our decision making in this.
