Amazingly, I’d forgotten about Werewolf by Night’s major subplot, the mysterious Darkhold book, an ancient European tome of yada yada yada. It’s not even a subplot, it’s a major, frequent plot point, but still, I had actually forgotten about it, probably because it ends up being used as an excuse for just about everything. But Conway does introduce it quite well in this issue. The thing I like most about his writing is the complete comic experience he brings to every issue. Three nights pass in this issue. Sure, lots of the time is spent with Jack Russell unconscious, but it’s still an actual passage of time. Conway gets a beginning, middle and end in, develops some of the unresolved concerns from the first issue (I guess they’d be C plots) and manages to introduce the Darkhold. Ploog’s got a lot to draw in this issue–bikers, claw-handed grotesques, a woman with a Bride of Frankenstein hairdo–and he does a great job (of course). S

Every time I read Werewolf by Night–starting, of course, in three issues of Marvel Spotlight–I marvel at two things. First, Mike Ploog’s artwork. It’s just so wonderful. In one issue, I probably found two perfect panels a page. It’s not only his faces (though he’s going to look great on The Spirit), it’s his understanding of movement. His figures move across the page–and his sense of composition is incredible. Makes me wonder why Conway covered so much of that art with words. The second thing I always notice is how well Conway modernizes the Universal Wolf Man movie–is Californize a word? Doesn’t seem to be, but it’s essentially what Conway does. He starts with the old poem from the movie and opens with a scene, though with modern scenery, looks like it’s out of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (just before Patric Knowles comes in to it). In the first few minutes the game was close, but the Gators really had total control in the 2nd half. One thing that hurt UCLA was foul trouble for Arron Afflalo in the first half. Florida is where they were last year and I don't think they will get cocky, but their coach will have to keep them under tight restraints if he feels the need to.
