The Red Ram is a great restaurant/bar to unwind in after skiing, especially if traffic on 70 traffic is unusually hellish.
I wandered around the residential streets for a bit [...]

Like with many of the nation’s oldest establishments, Georgetown’s magnetism is greatly driven by its historical significance and the fact that centuries of events, both remarkable and unremarkable, have taken place within its boundaries. Georgetown’s founding year—1751—predates that of the nation’s capital, and much of the neighborhood’s structures, streets, and institutions are pr
Old Stone House
The Old Stone House, which looks rather unremarkable at first glance, but in actuality is Washington D.C.’s oldest surviving building. The house was built in 1765, and unlike the other homes of its day, the Old Stone House was spared deconstruction through the centuries due to a local rumor that George Washington and Pierre Charles L’Enfant met there to discuss plans for desig

I taught a pet first aid class yesterday at the Tail Waggins Dog Bakery in Georgetown, TX. Every time I teach a class I hear stories of emergencies people have had with their pets. And quite often, whether their pet survives or not, the fear they remember from that emergency is what prompts them to [...]

Steve Paulson of Salon held a great interview with John Haught of Theology professor at Georgetown University on the new atheism. Two questions popped out in my mind in relation to the overall interview:
Your forthcoming book, “God and the New Atheism,” is a critique of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris. You claim that they are pale imitations of great atheists like Nietzsche, Camus and Sartre. What are they missing?
My chief objection to the new atheists is that they are almost completely ignorant of what’s going on in the world of theology. They talk about the most fundamentalist and extremist versions of faith, and they hold these up as though they’re the normative, central core of faith. And they miss so many things. They miss the moral core of Judaism and Christianity — the theme of social justice, which takes those who are marginalized and brings them to the center of society. They give us an extreme caricature of faith and religio

A great letter to the editor was published in the Georgetown News-Graphic this morning by Daniel Kelley. I really admire Kelley for this and have to admit that I envy those who has moved beyond my need for anonymity to share themselves in this way. Can you imagine what would happen if every atheist in America starting writing this sort of letter to their local newspapers even if only a couple times a year?Although I urge you to read Kelley's letter in its entirety, I thought I'd provide a couple of my favorite excerpts below:I don't even want to believe in a God that will send me to hell because, despite the good that I do, I simply did not see enough evidence to convince me that he (or she, or it) was actually there. You want me to believe in you? Give me a reason. I understand that flies in the face of "faith," but I fail to understand why we should take some unseen being's word on that one simple fact when we as a species require proof and explanation for nearly everything else
WASHINGTON (AP) — Georgetown star Jeff Green is heading to the NBA.
The Hoyas junior will keep his name in the NBA draft — he said last month he intended to turn pro, but said his decision wasn’t “set in stone” and kept his options open by not hiring an agent.
Monday is the deadline for early-entry candidates to withdraw from the June 28 draft.
Green, a 6-foot-9 forward, led Georgetown in scoring (14.3 points) and averaged 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists, helping the Hoyas reach the more…
The Quest for Critical MassIt's the college that houses the Underground Railroad Research Institute. The one that offers scholarships to inner-city students and is preparing to host a reunion of a defunct historically black college. You know, Georgetown College, in Kentucky, whose undergraduate population is 94 percent white.Come again?William H. Crouch Jr., president of the small, Christian liberal arts college, has heard that response many times before. He's used to blank stares on the road when he states his goal of Georgetown's non-white student percentage shooting into the upper teens."The fact that I'm a white college president at a mostly white college in a predominantly white part of the country is getting a lot of people's attention," Crouch said. "I tell them, "We're in a position to make a difference. It's the right thing to be doing.'"To some, Georgetown is known as the college that recently severed ties with its Baptist convention or, simply, as t

First Tee Scholars Program just start of diversity effortsIt was a last-minute favor. After the scheduled speaker suffered a heart attack, Georgetown College President William H. Crouch Jr. was asked to step in at The First Tee's 2001 annual meeting in Florida.Crouch said he didn't know anything about The First Tee, which uses golf to teach life and leadership skills to school-age children of all backgrounds."I was just helping a friend out," he said. But he found himself unexpectedly moved by the event's articulate high school student speaker, Steven Outlaw of East Chicago, Ind. When it was his turn to speak, Crouch put aside his prepared remarks and offered Outlaw a scholarship. He then offered a second scholarship to another First Tee student -- and pledged to find other colleges and universities to do the same.Six years later, The First Tee Scholars Program has spread to 28 colleges around the country -- including the Kentucky Community and Technical College System -- and has help
Let me tell you a little bit about my fiancee. She's a grad student at Georgetown, getting her Ph.D. in pharmacology. I don't need to tell you that she's significantly smarter than I am. Well, that's not entirely true: guess which one of us can still sing the entire theme song to Salute Your Shorts (we run, we jump, we swing and play...) [UPDATE: My lovely fiancee decided to continue to
Green eyeing returnBig East player of the year Jeff Green said Tuesday there is a "70-30" chance he will return to Georgetown for his senior season.Green and fellow teammate Roy Hibbert both declared for the draft last week, but neither hired an agent. Both players are potential lottery picks, and both said they want to get a good indicator of what their NBA value is and what it might be if they stay in school another year.Hibbert said it's worth the wait to get picked top 3 in 2008 instead of 8-14 this year. He also said he is about 50-50 on the decision. I am sure losing in the final four is another factor on leaning towards returning to school. If both Green and Hibbert return, the Hoyas will easily be number one and the favorite to win it all next season. While I believe Green is a more NBA ready player, both also clarified they wouldn't want to be playing from the end of the bench.I think both will return, especially if Green does Hibbert most likely will too. On a day celebrating the 100th anniversary of Georgetown basketball, the Hoyas made a capacity crowd filled with Georgetown greats of old, including Patrick Ewing, proud with a convincing 76-58 victory over #11 Marquette. As usual when Georgetown wins, their two stars, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert both played superbly with Green putting up a career high 24 points and Hibbert going for 23 and 11 rebounds. It seems like the Hoyas have turned a corner ever since an embarrassing loss at home to Villanova last month. In their 7 game winning streak, they've beaten up on the teams they should beat, and now have proven that they can beat a top-15 caliber team by defeating the Golden Eagles, who were riding an 8 game streak of their own.I'm not exactly unbiased here, but it's looking more and more like the Hoyas could make a deep run into March. They have size that most teams can only dream about, an offensive philosophy that places a premium on quality possessions, and experience from a Sweet
