Nevermind all the remarkable clothes -- L.A. is in the midst of a designer boutique boom that's as much about statement-making architecture and one-upsmanship as it is about selling bags and boots.1 Vote(s)

      Geography of Ancient Egypt
Life in ancient Egypt, “Gift of the Nile,” was centered largely on agriculture. The majority of the people were involved in farming, and the growing season lasted eight-nine months. Wheat, fruits and vegetables were the principal crops, although there was some pastoral farming of cattle, sheep, or goats. Farmers in ancient Egypt worked to reach a level of subsistence so that they could feed themselves and pay their taxes. During the annual flooding of the Nile, which typically lasted from July through November, farming was impossible. But when the waters receded, a thick layer of fertile silt over the farmlands remained to insure rich soil for their crops and thick grasses for their grazing animals. The country of Egypt consisted of two narrow strips of arable land lining either bank of

US IT outsourcing changes its geography?
Given the uncertainty about the US economic situation continues, a recent survey has forecast that spending on IT by the world’s biggest economy will shrink in the April-June quarter for the first time in nearly seven years (according to ). So US companies are looking for cost reduction, thus choosing cheap labour outsourcing destinations. As outsourcing to India becomes more expensive, North American companies are seeking alternatives. In years past a company could save 40% to 50% by hiring Indian firms to handle IT and other services, says Atul Vashistha, chairman at neoIT management consulting firm. Should the U.S. dollar continue its descent, that differential would shrink to 10% to 20%, he estimates. "If you're only going to have a 20% savings, clients start to think about time zone

So, if you’re thirsty, drink some water, but don’t force yourself to drink 8 – 8oz glasses unless that’s what you want to do. Of course, if you’re exercising, especially in hot weather, you need to drink more. How does water relate to Iowa Avenue’s Thursday Thirteen? History, geography - and value
The coastal hinterland is less well known and less expensive. Venture a few kilometres inland from Pesaro and Fano and you find an astonishingly unspoilt landscape. Forests rise on the slopes of the Appenines looking more akin to Tuscany or Umbria but with the added bonus of the sea a short drive away. And for buyers seeking a classic Italian farmhouse, or casolare , there are still bargains to be had. About €100,000 will buy a 100 sq metre unrenovated stone farmhouse with panoramic views about 20 minutes from the sea. Compare that to Tuscany, where one-bedroom apartments in renovated farm complexes sell for between €150,000 and €160,000.

Where are you from?I had to think before I answered. I knew that if I said Victoria, she wouldn't have a clue where that was. Vancouver would have been pushing it. I decided to go with:Me: The west coast of Canada.[silence]Her: I've never heard of that. Where is that?I considered that perhaps she didn't hear me correctly, for clearly "Canada" is a large country and "the west coast" describes a huge chuck of it pretty accurately. Italy Geography: Changes in Historical Times
Within historical times, that is a length of time varying in different parts of Italy from 2,000-3,000 years, changes in the physical environment have of course been gradual and limited. Some may be suggested, however, since they have affected man's activities in the historical period, even if only locally and to a limited extent. In the first place there has been considerable volcanic activity. Pompei and Herculaneum were completely destroyed by Vesuvius in A.D. 79; the former by an ash fall and the latter by a mud flow up to 20 metres thick, which was much harder than the pumice ash. Four volcanoes are still active. Associated in some cases with volcanic activity but generally with other movements in the earth's crust have been numerous earthquakes of varying degrees of intensity. Virtually every part of Italy is susceptible to tremors but very serious earthquakes are more limited in occurrence. Apart from a few areas in the Alps and Liguria the worst earthquakes have nearly all oc

      Italy: Geography and Structure
Although rocks of no great age, geologically speaking, outcrop over much of the surface of Italy, almost every geological period is represented somewhere in the country. A great variety of different types of rock is also to be found, and it is the nature of these rocks and the way in which they have been formed and now outcrop rather than their age, that help to account for present land forms. Lower Paleozoic rocks appear at the surface only in a few localities, being most extensive in the southern half of Sardinia, where they include limestones and are highly folded, but old rocks occur also in the Alps. The Carboniferous rocks of Italy differ markedly from those further north in Europe in having very few coal deposits, because conditions were less favourable for their formation. During Carboniferous and Permian times Italy, like areas further north, was affected by the Hercynian earth movements, and mountains were formed in the same general area that in Tertiary times became the Alps

      Geography of Ancient Egypt
The Nile RiverThe desert and the Nile River emerged when the ancient sea that covered most of Europe and northern Africa 45 million years ago shifted, forming the Mediterranean Sea basin. This shift occurred when the earth’s plates moved, creating the Himalayas and the Alps. As the Mediterranean basin sank to a much lower level than it is today, the Nile rushed down to it from the Ethiopian highlands. Over thousands of years, it evolved into its present shape. Fossils from the ancient sea can still be found throughout Egypt. Egypt LandThe northern region of Egypt is surrounded by two deserts, the mountainous Eastern, or Arabian, Desert and the sandy Western, or Libyan, Desert. In ancient times, the Egyptians called the desert the “red land”, distinguishing it from the flood plain a

The walks at the weekend were fantastic to get a look at the Alps close up. I was constantly reminded of my geography lessons from back in school. I can remember quite a bit about those classes and sometimes wonder why I didn’t take up geography as a career. It was one of those subjects, and there weren’t many, that seemed easy to learn and to understand. Anyway, we had a teacher called Ms. Fox and while she had her moments (I remember learning line dancing at one point), overall she had a great enthusiasm for all things geographical. We learned about volacanos, the different types of rock, rivers and lakes, the weather systems in central France, freeze thaw erosion and so on. While Ireland is equipped with some fine examples of the geographical features Ms. Fox taught us, I only realise now why she was so excited about them. When you see the glaciers coming down the slopes, the valleys they have carved out many thousands of years ago, the rock layers in the cliffs, the mor

I didn't care much about scientific precision or accurate I started with the spider in his web, which in this case is me in my flat and not the www. Then neighborhood, university, the city, the planet, and then finally the Milky Way. I tried to represent a part of the relations I have and the way I get in contact whit thees people. In a 3D-world the maps would be put on top of each other in the order you see them here in the blog....

Running Game Thread; Cubs vs. Giants; 3:05 CT: Hey, I know you, we had geography class together
Per the words of Slater from Dazed and Confused, these two teams will reacquaint themselves after the Cubbies and Big Z put it all over Rick Moranis and the Little Giants on Friday. The one difference about today's game? One Barry Lamar Bonds shall be in the lineup. Now, much is to be said about Barry, but you know what? I'm getting sick of it all. Either get your crap together, Feds, and bring an indictment or let's just move on. It's getting very tiresome. Let him get the record and move on. A-Rod will break it eventually anyway. That being said, if someone hits this guy today, I certainly won't be upset. Man Law gets the start today for the Cubs, and needs a good outing to solidify a rotation spot. Just like myself, maybe he should quit drinking with his buddies and focus more on work. For the Giants, the Cubs will see Barry "Moneybags" Zito. A lot of us thought maybe we should have gone after Zito, but what fun would have that been? It's much better to hinge the season on o

      The Geography of a Woman
Between the ages of 18 - 21 a woman is like Africa or Australia. She is half discovered, half wild and naturally beautiful with bushland around the fertile deltas. Between the ages of 21 - 30 a woman is like America or Japan. Completely discovered, very well developed and open to trade especially with countries with cash or cars. Between the ages of 30 - 35, she is like India or Spain. Very hot, relaxed and convinced of its own beauty. Between the ages of 35 - 40 a woman is like France or Argentina. She may have been half destroyed during the war but can still be a warm and desirable place to visit. Between the ages of 40 - 50 she is like Yugoslavia or Iraq. She lost the war and is haunted by past mistakes. Massive reconstruction is now necessary. Between the ages of 50 - 60 she is like Russia or Canada. Very wide, quiet and the borders are practically unpatrolled but the frigid climate keeps people away. Between the ages of 60 - 70 a woman is like England or Mongolia. With

World History and Geography Gain Traction In Class
Long belittled for their ignorance of foreign cultures—not to mention an inability to locate well-known countries on world maps—an increasing number of U.S. high school students are taking courses designed to expand their international knowledge. A recent federal study shows that the percentage of American students taking world history and world geography in high school has risen faster than enrollment in any other social studies classes over the past 15 years. This from Education Week.

Blog Toys - For the Geography Nuts
I love looking at my stats counters to see who is visiting my little boring old blog. It must be the geography geek in me. I love looking at maps. Different stats counters have different ways of showing blog owners who is visiting. I'm too cheap to splurge on the pro stat counters, so I'm making due with a few freebies. The handy old SiteMeter is a good standby. But, as far as maps go, it's kind of lame. Here is the typical map view you get from SiteMeter:You can zoom in though, but not too much before it gets blurry. For comparisons sake, I'll zoom in on my Los Angeles hits, especially that green dot. That green dot represents a gentle reader who is on my blog A LOT folks. Must be a big fan. Now, if we look at my stats from the same time frame, another stat counter I like to use (coincidentally called Stat Counter) gives a much more detailed look at who is visiting you, thanks to Google Maps. Unfortunately, Stat Counter (freebie version) only shows you the last 100 page l

      Teaching Kids Geography
To help teach my kids about the world around them I implemented a trick for teaching basic geography.I scrounged around for the maps occasionally included as inserts in National Geographic Magazine and put them up, one at a time, on a conspicuous place in the kitchen. I wrote questions on index cards and taped them up around the map for the children to solve. For example, this month we've got a map of the Balkans up so I have "Where is Budapest?" and "Where is Montenegro?" stuck around it.When a child can answer all the questions they show me their answers and are eligible for a treat from The Bag. Sometimes it's a few M&Ms, sometimes it's a fancy pencil, whatever I happen to have on hand.A good place to find maps is in the discard piles at your local library. They're always getting rid of old magazines, just make sure they're current. For some other fun links to maps try these:Middle Earth, an interactive map of Tolkien's world with zooms similar to Google EarthTrove Maps, a sit

      Interesting Geography
Alaska More than half of the coastline of the entire United States is in Alaska.Amazon The Amazon rainforest produces more than 20% the world's oxygen supply. The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.Antarctica Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country. Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica. This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world. As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert. The average yearly total precipitation is about two inches Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, i.e.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi deser

Regarding animals and the weather, I'd have to say Sam Gribley's nuthatch would have been a good forecaster. Here, the score is: goldfinches...1 weatherman...0 The weather report said it was to be sunny and warmer with a fifty percent chance of precipitation. The goldfinches said it was time to eat as much as possible before the weather turned. We ended up with only light flurries, but by

      Bali Geography
Virtually, you are in Bali. One of the over fourteen thousand islands of the Indonesian archipelago, the island of Bali sits exactly 12 time zones away from New York City, approximately halfway between Singapore on the tip of the South East Asian peninsula and Darwin on the northwestern part of Australia. You can see it on this Asia map. On the map above, select any region of Bali (North, East, Central, South, or West) where you want to go to, and we'll take you there. Physically, however, we have a slight problem. But no worry. Simply choose your preferred mode of transport. Or you might prefer to read some general information about Bali before you disembark, and find out what the tropical weather of Bali is like. After which, a photographic montage of Bali will delight your eyes. And these places of interest will surely be enough of an invitation (there is even a one-page summary of these places that you can print and take along with you...). One thing to remember about Bali is that

Daily Podcast: The Geography of Nowhere
I remember when Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen were all subsets of a larger brand: "German car." Although Mercedes best exemplified what is now called the moniker's "mindspace," all three German manufacturers were known for selling better-built cars than American machines. And don't tell me they weren't. Read Arthur Haley's seminal work "Wheels" and you'll appreciate Detroit's horrifically lackadaisacal attitude to product quality during the 60's and 70's. Suffice it to say, the exploding Ford Pinto was neither a surprise nor an aberration. When VW went native, becoming the first foreign manufacturer to plant its factory flag on American soil, the results were, initially, disastrous. Fortunately for VW, the brand's German car rep was so strong the company survived its own inability to build quality products on U.S. soil. And then Mexico. And Brazil. These days, everyone builds cars everywhere. Although globalisation has forced A
