A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This DNA is then transferred

The following vital information is, frankly, frightening, as it means that we have entered into a new world of disease never before imagined. This is not a conspiracy theory. When you read what follows, you will understand why this issue may already be known by a select few, but kept from the public domain. The issue has to deal with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Over the last several decades, obesity and diabetes have become epidemic. Children, adults, poor people, wealthy people, Americans, Africans - all over the world people are becoming obese and developing diabetes. We are concerned that the current epidemic of obesity and diabetes may be caused by a new problem, never before considered because it never before existed. Of course, when you think of the cultural/lifestyle causes of obes

Nihon Shokuhin Kako Co. Ltd., Japan's largest buyer of corn for use in food, is importing genetically modified supplies for the first time this year as high prices deter gene-pure purchases, a company executive said. The Tokyo-based company plans to process 250,000 metric tons of U.S. GMO corn in 2008, signaling a change in policy on corn procurement, Mikio Shoji, director at Nihon Shokuhin Kako, said in an interview. The company, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp., is the biggest of 11 Japanese corn-starch makers and buys more than 750,000 tons of the grain annually. Food makers in Japan, the world's largest corn importer, pay a premium for non-modified supplies because of consumer concerns that GMO varieties may not be safe. "Franken-sugar" -- or genetically engineered sugar -- will make its way to stores this year, alerts Citizens for Health. So much for claims made in 2001 by Hershey's, M&M Mars, and American Crystal Sugar that they wouldn't use genetically engineered sugar. "But now that sugar beets are close to being planted commercially, they have made no such assurances," the citizens group bemoans. Isn't it bad enough that Americans are over-dosing on regular sugar? Now companies want to get genetically engineered sugar into the marketplace, too? This is cause for alarm, Citizens for Health warns. "Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates new life forms that would never occur in nature, creating new and unpredictable health and environmental risks. Genes from ba

Tom and Jerry just wouldn't have been the same if it had featured one of Ko Kobayakawa's mice. The age-old animosity between cats and mice could be a thing of the past. New genetically engineered mice show no fear of cats, according to the Japanese scientists who created the rodents. The modified mice may also shed new light on mammal behavior. Scientists at the University of Tokyo say they have used genetic engineering to successfully switch off a mouse's instinct to cower at the smell or presence of cats - evidence that fear may be genetically hardwired and not learned through experience, as commonly believed. Kobayakawa developed the fearless mice by shutting down receptors in their olfactory bulb - the area of the brain that processes information about smells - which would normally induce panic as soon as they get so much as a whiff of a cat. "Mice are naturally terrified of cats and usually panic or flee at the smell of one. But mice with certain nasal cells r
The mice have been genetically modified to get rid of certain smell receptors in their brains which react to the odors of cats. Usually mice freeze and play dead when they smell a cat, but these mutant mice just go about life as usual.

One of the more vexing medical mysteries to have surfaced in recent years is the startling and inexplicable rise in food allergies currently being seen in the western world. As medical offices and emergency rooms increasingly fill with adults and children suffering reactions to common foods, researchers are scratching their heads over the cause. Some in the scientific community, however, believe the alarming increase in food allergies can be traced to the public’s growing exposure to genetically modified foods.

Jokes aside this is a subject that a lot of people are not happy with as scientists at Johns Hopkins University have been playing with the DNA of lab mice egg cells.
They have genetically engineered the mice to give them a mental illness (SCHIZOPHRENIA) which they hope will help humans.

Genetically modified (GM) crops, some of which contain their own built-in pesticides that split open the stomachs of the insects that consume them, are having serious health consequences on humans, according to this excellent article by Jeffrey Smith, the leading U.S. expert on GM foods.Of particular concern is the pesticide called Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), which is produced in some GM crops. Though organic farmers have used solutions containing this natural bacteria for years as a method of insect control, GM plants produce about 3,000-5,000 times the amount of toxin as these sprays. Further, a Bt-producing GM plant continuously produces the toxin in every cell, where it does not dissipate by weather and cannot be washed off, as is the case with the topical solutions.Mice fed Bt-toxin showed significant immune responses that indicated exposure might make a person allergic to a wide range of substances. Meanwhile:People exposed to Bt sprays have reacted with allergy and flu-like sym

GloFish fluorescent fish are beautiful and unique freshwater fish that were originally bred to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a natural fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists hope to one day quickly and easily determine when our waterways are contaminated. To achieve their goal of helping to fight water pollution, scientists are in the process of adding a “switch” that will cause the always fluorescing GloFish zebra fish to selectively fluoresce in the presence of environmental toxins. A non-fluorescing fish will signal that the water is safe, while a fluorescing fish will signal trouble.

If you live in the US or Canada, chances are that is a yes. What exactly does it do to you? Now there's the gray area... The most recent country to say no to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is Venezuela. Thanks to President Hugo Chavez Frias, these crops won't be growing on Venezuelan soil. Recently, varying degrees of these bans have been sprouting up all over the place, from California (more here and here) to European countries including Switzerland and Greece. Do they work? Well, the problem is regulation — and pressure from the US, Argentina, and Canada, according to a recent New York Times article. Effective this year, despite the bans, members of the European Union are required to keep their doors open to GMOs...
Watch this video about how food production around the world has developed and become degraded as new farming methods have produced masses of reduced nutrient crops. It gives frightening details of how scientists go about producing genetically modified crops - see if you want to eat them after watching this. It is really no wonder that the population has become increasingly under-nourished as the foods we eat contain ever-increasing chemical fertilisers and pesticides and ever-decreasing levels of vitamins and minerals. .There are several more videos in the "future of food series". Bully Monsanto is trying to get Mexico to plant its genetically modified corn, but Mexico is resisting. Mexico's agriculture department banned Monsanto and other companies from planting any GM corn in an effort to preserve the pure and ancient varieties Mexico has been growing for hundreds of years. But this is unlikely the last word on the matter, as Monsanto is standing firm and is won't give up until it gets its way.
Bullying elsewhere: These companies, via the American Soybean Association, are in the process of bullying the EU over their restrictions on GM soybeans. They will not be satisfied until they own all major crops the world over.
