The blogosphere is going nuts over Wesley Clark's comments about John McCain's military service, and Obama's speech on patriotism in which he rebuked Clark's comments. I can't say I care a whole lot about either, but the whole overblown controversy led my friend Kyle at CFLF to make some really important points about McCain's concept of the relationship between the President and the military that

"The thought of ceding the Golan Heights gives me a bellyache, but for real peace one must be willing to pay a real price. Theoretically, Israel can do without the Golan," said Halutz during a cultural event in Beersheba, Saturday.
Just what is this "real price"? How many people will die in this region when Syria decides to launch it's invasion? Why would a General be willing
Ex-generals plan long march, sit-in at Army House By Rauf KlasraThe News, May 20, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Retired Army generals, including some who trained and groomed Pervez Musharraf, have planned a long march and a sit-in before the Army House in Rawalpindi to get it vacated so that Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani could move [...]
Quite difficult to understand, after Burma and its regime of military has received pledges of outside help in the human catastrophe following cyclone Nargis, that it still bars aid workers form entering the country. As there was a holiday yesterday, Burma's embassy was closed and not offering visas for aid workers -- quite an unimaginable bureaucratic failure in light of the possibility, that much more than 30,000 people might have been killed and most of the current rice crop devastated. My personal feeling would be NOT to give money to aid organizations; initially harsh for the population affected, but it is very doubtful that any help will reach them and secondly, it further solidifies the hold of the junta on Burma -- which must be broken or suffering on a much larger scale will follow.
Command & Conquer Generals - Zero Hourhough it wasn't the first game of its type, Command & Conquer became synonymous with real-time strategy gaming when the very first game in the series was released in 1995. Along with Blizzard's Warcraft II, Command & Conquer helped build the foundation for one of PC gaming's most beloved genres, defining many of the real-time strategy conventions that are
The world has moved on to more important issues since the days when monks walked the streets on Burma protesting the military junta’s attack on the liberties of the people. The world media offered horrific sights of monks being beaten, youth being assaulted, and the people of Myanmar being denied of all human rights in [...]
No war ever fought had more officer causalities than the Civil War. Numerous high-ranking generals were killed on the battlefield and that was especially so for Confederate chieftains. Valor was arguably the most important character trait in nineteenth-century America, particularly in the South. Being labeled a coward was a stain worse than death. For this reason, many generals took enormous risks

Retired General Robert Scales told a Senate Committee it was imperative to begin a process that would result in bringing home most American soldiers from Iraq. He said there is no doubt a major withdrawl from combat is necessary because the United States has “run out of military options” and cannot continue the strain on [...]

General Deepak Kapoor, the Chief of the Army Staff, has kicked up an all too familiar storm after his interview with Karan Thapar. Major Jaswant Singh, former Defence and Finance Minister, has criticized the COAS for his remarks, particularly on incursions by the Chinese into Arunachal Pradesh, and virtually asked the government to gag the Army Chief.Major Jaswant Singh, who left the Army many decades ago but still wears a safari suit with military type pockets and shoulder flaps, is senior to the Chief in service. That, he thinks, gives him the right to tick off the COAS in public, as if the guy does not know what he is saying. To my mind, all that the General can be faulted for was the diffidence and extreme caution that he showed during the interview with Thapar. The Major has probably
Targeted sanctions intended to hit Burma's generals where it hurts have so far neglected one of their major sources of income and personal prestige—the importation and resale of luxury automobiles. Automobile prices in Burma are among the highest in the world. A new Toyota Land Cruiser, for example, costs around 400 million kyat (about US $312,000), five times the Web site list price of $63,000. So why the discrepancy? The answer lies deep in the tangle of Burmese corruption and bureaucracy. For a start, an import license is required, and procuring one costs a lot of money—more than the average Burmese citizen can afford. Contacts at the top are also useful. Automobiles prices have been rising steeply since the late 1990s, when ex-Gen Tun Kyi was Minister of Trade. Tun Kyi was forced to retire in 1997, but until his departure from office he and his family controlled the business of importing automobiles to Burma. He issued import license only to his cronies. Before Tun Kyi w
"You should get closer," the Burmese woman, a medical student, told two foreigners ahead of her in the crowd. "If you are there they won't shoot." She was terribly wrong. A group of protesters, thousands strong, massed on the corner of Anawratha and Sule Pagoda Roads. Facing them were dozens of soldiers and riot police. It was just after 1 p.m. There were only a handful of monks in the crowd. On any other recent day, thousand of their brethren would be streaming from the Shwedagon Pagoda some 2 miles to the north, on their march into downtown Rangoon. But this morning the Shwedagon was closed and its approach roads guarded by soldiers and riot police. And last night, according to reports, many monasteries had been raided and hundreds of monks arrested. The protesters were peaceful and buoyant. They chanted religious sutras, meant to express the Buddhist notion of metta, or loving kindness. These have been chanted at every rally, every march, and even those who do not speak Burmes
On his first day in office the new Turkish President Abdullah Gul attended the graduation ceremony at the Gulhane Military Academy for Medicine and for the first time as president, met with the military commanders. Before Gul entered accompanied by the Chief of Staff it was announced that everybody should stand for the president. President Gul presented the first diploma to the valedictorian, Speaker Toptan to the second-best student, PM Erdogan to the third and Chief of General Staff General Buyukanit to the fourth student. Mainstream Turkish daily Hurriyet reported that while the applause during President Gul’s presentation was weak, there was a loud and long round of applause for General Buyukanit when he got up to present the fourth diploma. The Chief of Staff did not salute the President in military style when Gul got up to go to the podium, contrary to the custom. The generals looked solemn and thoughtful during the ceremony.

Everyone knew Sister C of the general nursing wards and Sister S of the Cameron wing wards. One with flaming red hair and the other short in stature both held the reins of this charging horse called St Vincent’s, never loosing grip and always in total control. They led their charges, as the Generals did during World War Two.It did not matter whether you were placed very low or very high on the food chain; you respected both equally and stood to attention in their presence. Now, do not get me wrong. They may have been as hard as nails but they had a tender side that touched many hearts, especially those of junior nurses.Being placed in the lower perc
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 — As the Bush administration mulls options for withdrawing forces in Iraq, fault lines are beginning to emerge in a debate between commanders in the field who favor slow reductions and senior generals at the Pentagon who favor cutting the number of combat troops more deeply.
Among others, Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Army chief of staff, are said to be leaning toward a recommendation that steep reductions by the end of 2008, perhaps to half of the 20 combat brigades now in Iraq, should be the administration’s goal.
Such a drawdown would be deeper and faster than Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, is expected to recommend next month, administration officials said.
“If you’re out in Baghdad you might have a different priority for where you want the troops,” an administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the White House has not authorized public remar

A look at the top 8 AL pitchers for our All-Star team.It is a rule that all fantasy news sites and blogs must list their all-stars at this time of year. Though I really don't care for the process, as it is so subjective, it is a rule and our blogosphere credentials will be revoked if we don't do our own all-star list. Matt and I will be splitting duties for this, and I will be looking at Starting pitchers and Outfielders. So holding our collective noses, here are our picks for the Al starting pitchers, in order:1. C.C. Sabathia--clearly the class of the AL field in my view, though it helps his cause that he is the anchor of my high-stakes league staff. Forget the gaudy 12-2 record; his 8.1 K rate and 1.2 BB rate show he is at the top of the class, and with a 32% hit rate he actually should be a bit better. I sure hope for him to be even better in the second half. Cy Young, here he comes.2. Dan Haren--I know it is almost heresy to not have Johan number 2, but Haren deserves the spot.

Less than a year ago, the Republicans imposed great hardship on the Army and Marine Corps by their failure to pass a necessary funding language. This time, the President of the United States is holding our Soldiers hostage to his ego. More than ever apparent, only the Army and the Marine Corps are at war - alone, without their President’s support.

On the one hand I think this could be a good idea. If they can empower a single individual to do what needs to be done, to make the hard decisions and to do it without any political entanglements...it just might work. But if it's just a way to hand off a hot potato that the war in Iraq has become...then it's not such a great idea. I woud also have some concerns about some of the more hawkish parties at the White House actually relinquishing their control. Hint, hint: Dick Cheney. I suspect that the retired Generals they have contacted so far see it as a move to hand off an unpopular war. The three mentioned in the story have all been administration "insiders" so they must be seeing something to turn down what many would consider a choice job offer. ~RJHWashington Post story link3 Generals Spurn the Position of War 'Czar'Bush Seeks Overseer For Iraq, AfghanistanBy Peter Baker and Thomas E. Spitzer, who was rated the third-worst state attorney general by the study, claims to be the scourge of wealthy "economic royalists" But when rich trial lawyers demanded a staggering $625 million for bringing New York's copycat lawsuit against the tobacco companies — at a rate of $13,000 an hour — Spitzer supported them, even though they began work only after tobacco companies had already given in to lawsuits brought by two other states. When a New York trial judge issued an order blocking the award on ethical grounds, Spitzer helped them get the order overturned based on a technicality.
