Gastric Bypass Surgery Leads to Kidney Stones
A particular type of gastric bypass surgery called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) can rapidly lead to the development of kidney stones -- small, pebble-like deposits in the kidneys that can cause severe pain. These stones develop in patients within only a few months following the procedure, rather than several months to years, as had been previously thought. RYGB is the most commonly performed su

Nitrates in Vegetables Protect You Against Gastric Ulcers
Fruits and vegetables that are rich in nitrates can protect your stomach from damage. The nitrates are converted into nitrites by the bacteria in your mouth, and then subsequently transformed into biologically active nitric oxide in the stomach. That means that antibacterial mouthwashes can also be harmful for the stomach. Nitrate-rich vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, radishes and beetroot activate the mucous membranes' own protective mechanisms, reducing the risk of problems such as gastric ulcers.

Rethinking BMI Criteria For Gastric Bypass Surgery!!
Bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, has usually been reserved for people who would qualify based on body mass index as morbidly obese. A body mass index of 40 or more qualifies as morbidly obese. Newer thinking is leaning toward broadening the criteria. While a BMI of 40 or more is certainly one criteria that should be looked at seriously, many doctor believe that overweight people with health issues such as heart disease should be given consideration even if they don’t meet the BMI criteria. A recent study indicated that a higher BMI doesn’t necessarily mean a higher chance of heart disease than say, someone with a BMI of 30 might have. The conclusion was that bariatric surgery may be worth considering at lower BMI’s. Current guidelines suggest surgery with a BMI of 40 or more, 35 or more if there is life threatening disease already in place. Bottom line. Obesity can be the tip of the iceberg with a host of health issues hiding beneath. Health evaluations shou

There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Because other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently, this article focuses on adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts think the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods, and increased vitamin C consumption. However, the incidence of adenocarcinoma in the high part of the stomach where it connects with the esophagus has increased markedly, along with an increase in

Obesity is at epidemic levels in the US. In the past 20 years the trend toward obesity has been dramatic to the point where there are now only 4 states, Hawaii, Colorado, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where less than 20% of the population has a body mass index of less than 30. Two states, Mississippi and West Virginia, are the only states that top 30% of the population being at obese levels. Obesity is the most talked about topic in my blogs simply because it is topped only by smoking as a situation that has so many potential collateral health issues. You can talk dieting, medication, hypnosis, exercise, and in the end. like Will from ABC’s Fat March put it, “you’re addicted, and until you can break that addiction, none of those things work”. Gastric Bypass Procedure [GBP], a procedure applied to address the severe condition of morbid obesity, is an option that more and more obese Americans are turning to save a deteriorating body. Recent statistics in the United States have come up with staggering figures. From the 58 million people who number as overweight, 3 million are morbidly obese. Gastric Cancer On The Decline
You may be surprised to learn that gastric cancer is on the decline, bucking the trend of most other types of cancer. It is disappointing to read research health news about the increase in cancer rates and painful to hear yet another report of the illness of someone we know who has lost the fight to cancer. Fortunately, there appears to be some hope in the horizon.Gastric cancer cases, in comparison, were many back years ago. This type of cancer was number eight in the cause of death by cancer in the United States in 1944. While there is still room for debate on the subject, most medical professionals believes that specific changes in the American diet has resulted in the positive turn for gastric cancer cases. They say that it is because of the advances in refrigeration that resulted in people eating more fruits and vegetables and less of foods preserved in salt. The revised diet contains many anti-oxidants which are believed to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.Gas

Gastric Bypass Surgery and Life Insurance!
Often a person that is extremely overweight resorts to gastric bypass surgery to get everything under control. Gastric bypass, in a nutshell, sews off most of the stomach, leaving the person with a stomach that is easily filled with a minimal portion compared to what they used to eat. Life insurance companies welcome that weight loss….cautiously. First of all, life insurance underwriters treat gastric bypass weight loss the same way they treat any other rapid weight loss. There is an assumption that the instant success won’t last and if a person really wants to eat, they will keep working at it until the can stretch their new, smaller stomach to accomodate more food. I recently worked with a client that had kept their weight down in the 240# range for two years after coming down from 370#. We started talking about life insurance and by the time he actually did his insurance exam, he was up to 259#. We still got a good rate, but not as good as if he had kept his weight down

      Gastric Bypass Fatality Gauge
Gastric bypass, a.k.a bariatric surgery is this procedure that is known to cause one to lose weight because it makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass parts of the small intestine. This will consequently make one feel full a lot quickly than when the stomach is in its original size. When food bypass some parts of the small intestine some calories don’t get absorbed easily, too, which also adds to the weight loss effect of this surgery. If you are considering to undergo a weight loss surgery procedure such as gastric bypass but are scared of its risks, there is now a scoring sytem that may help measure the chances of dying from the procedure. The scoring system was first proposed in 2006 by Duke University Medical surgeons and has been validated in a new study with 4,400 participants. The factors considered to get a good estimation of whether a person is at risk of dying from gastric bypass include the patient’s age, gender, blood pressure, weight, and the risk

Gastric Bypass Surgery And The Digestive System
We tend to use the term gastric bypass surgery somewhat loosely these days and include both true bypass operations such as the Roux-En-Y and popular and less radical forms of weight loss surgery such as gastric banding. While both have a role to play in curing the problem of obesity, bypass surgery takes full advantage of the body to affect weight loss and, in order to understand just how gastric bypass surgery works, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the digestive system. The process of digestion begins as soon as you start to eat when, as you chew your food in your mouth, saliva, which contains the digestive enzyme amylase, is mixed with your food and starts to break down carbohydrates. Although it may not seem an important part of the digestive system, the saliva glands produce about 40% of the amylase used in the digestive process and so chewing your food properly is an essential part of the process. Food is then passed down the esophagus and into the stomach where m
