I do not believe it is good policy to lower fuel prices. With help from the markets Americans will adapt. However, governments must be proactive and provide relief by making wise policy decisions that address the problem(s) and not exacerbate them.Oil is a nonrenewable resource that will not remain in large quantities or easily accessible forever so the future price of diesel or gas could theoreti

A determined President Bush challenged Congress to deal with the soaring price of gasoline by insisting they approve drilling in Alaska and the construction of a string of new oil refineries across the country. After a series of irrelevant questions, a Whirled News reporter asked the President whether these new initiatives weren’t in direct contradiction to his State of the Union speech in which he said that “America is addicted to oil.”Several reporters stared in disbelief, and one was heard to mutter, “What kind of reporter does he think he is, asking questions like that?”The President replied that his new proposals actually supported his warning that America was addicted to oil.“We’ve got to make sure things get worse with our addiction first,” he said. “Only after our

California startup Amyris engineers microbes to transform them into molecular oil refineries, digesting sugar to produce low-carbon equivalents of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Now in a bid to commercialize its technology, Amryis (web site ) has struck a deal to create a joint venture with Brazilian ethanol giant Crystalev to produce biodiesel from sugarcane. Some three-quarters of Brazil's cars run on ethanol made from domestic sugarcane but the country imports diesel. "This is a game changer," Amyris co-founder Jack Newman told Green Wombat this week at Fortune's Brainstorm Green conference in Pasadena. With the price of oil and gasoline hitting record highs, it's time to wake up and face the crude truth on how you can save money on energy costs. As commodity traders push oil prices ever higher as the dollar recedes, there's little, if any, relief in sight at the fuel pump or from soaring utility bills.Yet the deer-in-the-headlights attitude that most investors, vehicle owners and homeowners adopt is misguided. There are quite a few actions you can take to beat the escalating cost of energy. The most-common response to high gasoline prices is to go out and purchase a high-mileage vehicle. This reaction certainly hasn't hurt the sales of companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which offer several fuel-stingy cars, trucks and vans.If you have a long commute or simply drive a

Scientists carried out a study of seven additives for the Britain’s Food Standards Agency. They found that children's intelligence was being significantly damaged. Officials at the FSA have advised their directors to call for the food industry to remove six additives named in the study by the end of next year.
Some sweetmakers have already unilaterally agreed to remove the suspect food colors.

General Motors is developing the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle and its lithium-ion battery pack on parallel paths—and both have passed significant milestones en route to a targeted November 2010 launch.
Larry Burns, GM vice-president of research and development and strategic planning, tells Car and Driver in an interview that the design of the car has been frozen. Although the production model is not a twin of the Volt concept, the more conventional sedan bears a family resemblance to the Chevy Malibu. And in the interests of speed, it dips into parts bins of existing GM products wherever possible. That likely includes an existing four-cylinder gasoline engine as the onboard means of recharging the battery that, alone, gives the vehicle a range of only 40 miles.
The car was designed ar

I wish it was a coupon to print out, because traffic would go really crazy. However there is a pretty easy way (at least in theory!) to save 15% off of your overall gas spend. Given that here it is $3.45/Gallon now that is over 51 cents per gallon savings! That would help with my budget!Ready!...Drive slower (I hear the groans). Consumer Reports just did a pretty exhaustive survey to dig into the costs of driving faster. It would have been at 35 MPG then it dropped to 30 MPG, or 14.3% less! The older the car the worse it would be too.Funny thing is last big oil crisis the government lowered the speed limit to 55, not for safety, but to save fuel! It sta

TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Sales of new vehicles in Japan slumped to the lowest level in 33 years in the year ended March 31 as higher gasoline prices turned off prospective buyers, according to data released by an industry group on Tuesday.
It was the fifth straight year of decline.
Sales of new cars, trucks and buses, excluding minivehicles, fell 4.5 percent to 3.43 million units, the lowest since the year to March 1975 when sales stood at 3.34 million, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said.
Car sales dropped 2.1 percent to 2.96 million, down for the fourth straight year, while sales of buses declined 10.1 percent to 15,315 and truck sales dropped 17.7 percent to 446,669 units.

Indonesia may increase the price of subsidized gasoline by 22 percent in July, Kontan reported, citing Harry Azhar Aziz, deputy chairman of the parliament's state budget committee. Raising the price of subsidized gasoline is one of three options the government proposed to parliament to help reduce its subsidy bill in the wake of higher international crude oil prices, the newspaper cited Aziz as saying. Subsidized gasoline currently sells for 4,500 rupiah (49 cents) a liter at fuel stations. Other options include limiting the use of subsidized fuel and imposing an excise tax on the fuel, the report said. The government and lawmakers will decide on one of the three options in July. It appears that my previous post on the electric conversion class got a lot of interest. I have been asked several questions; the main one being “can I convert my car?”
Well, here is an answer and some basic information.
I’m no expert on converting gasoline cars to electric, but it’s my understanding that if you are going to do a conversion, you are better off using a light-weight vehicle instead of a heavy one. Now, what do I mean by light or heavy vehicle?
Think of compact and subcompact models as light-weight vehicles. Used cars like the Geo Metro, Honda Civic CRX, and VW Rabbit (all of which are no longer produced) are compact vehicles that are great for converting to electric because they each weigh less than 2,000 pounds.
Heavier cars such as the Toyota Camry,

The pumps, made by Gilbarco Veeder-Root, include an Internet connection and will display Google’s mapping service in color on a small screen. Motorists will be able to scroll through several categories to find local landmarks, hotels, restaurants and hospitals selected by the gas station’s owner.
After the driver selects a destination, the pump will print out directions. Eventually, Gilbarco Veeder-Root hopes to enable motorists to type in a specific address and get directions.

Iran's acting oil minister, Gholam-Hossein Nozari, has issued the permit for importing gasoline temporarily, a senior official said Monday. The National Iranian Oil Products Refining and Distribution Co (NIOPRDC) managing director, Mohammad-Reza Nematzadeh, added that Nozari, the Oil Ministry's caretaker and National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) managing director, gave the go-ahead as the 2.5 billion dollar budget ran out. The NIOPRDC chief was quoted by PIN as saying that the NIOC would provide the currency needed for imports of the commodity. Based on the permit, he added, 14 to 15 million liters of gasoline would be imported per day. Iran began rationing gasoline from June 22 and the Oil Ministry has allocated each private car 100 liters per month at about 10 cents per liter for regular and 15 cents for premium gasoline. Under the plan, gasoline is only supplied through smart card, an initiative taken by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to stop lavish fuel consumption by over seven mill
$1.59 was the price per gallon of gasoline back in 1970s. This year however, this precious liquid approached and quickly surpassed the $3 per-gal mark.
What causes gasoline prices to soar? There are multiple reasons for that. Typically, rising costs are common for the summer, because a lot of people are going on vacation and more driving is involved. Holidays, such as Thanksgiving are also a precondition for a higher demand and respectively higher price. Major disasters, such as hurricanes can also be “helpful” (for example, when hurricane Katrina hit, refineries went out of order, causing a spike in prices due to higher demand and lower supply). The cost of crude oil, refinery processing costs, marketing and distribution costs, and taxes are directly reflecting on what the consumers pay at the pump. Some states such as California and Chicago require clean-burning fuel which can only be supplied from certain refineries, once again resulting in elevated prices.

General Motors Corp. says it intends to improve the mileage of its gasoline engines by making them run more like diesel engines.Although many automakers are pursuing the same strategy - notably Honda - GM became the first company Friday to demonstrate the technology in running concept cars."This is not ready for prime time yet," said Tom Stephens, group vice-president of powertrain for GM. It must have come as a chock to the people in impoverished Zimbabwe, but refined gasoline wasn't seeping from the rocks after all, despite claims to the contrary by a "traditional healer":
When traditional healer Rotina Mavhunga claimed in April that she had discovered deposits of refined gasoline seeping from rocks near a spiritual shrine, the find was heralded as manna from heaven.
Long-suffering Zimbabweans jumped on the news as a welcome respite from their daily economic gloom — including an acute gasoline shortage — and the government investigated reports that the liquid had powered a diesel vehicle.
But on Sunday the bubble burst when state media reported that police had arrested 50 followers of Mavhunga. The tribal healer herself was on the run.

The healer made headlines with her claims that she had found the gasoline near an ancestral shrine in the Chinhoyi district, 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Harare, state radio said.

Gasoline prices in Moscow soared 5.5 percent in the first three weeks of this August, Moscow Fuel Association (MFA) reported Tuesday. Taken for Russia, the prices grew 3.2 percent in the first half of this month, according to Russia’s Statistics Committee. So, the government has apparently lost its battle with prices for fuel. Despite all efforts of the cabinet, the surge in retail prices for gasoline still equals consumer inflation - both of them stepped up 6.9 percent from early this year. A liter of Ai-92 averaged 18.73 rubles at Moscow gasoline stations, MFA said, while Ai-95 gasoline fetched 19.77 rubles. The prices surged 5.5 percent over the first three weeks of this month with the better part of the growth occurred in the past week. In Russia overall, the fuel prices grew 3.7 percent from January to July, said Russian Statistics Committee. But gasoline gained another 3.2 percent in the first two weeks of this August, signaling the growth rates have caught up with inflation.
By the year 2010 Russia will encounter the necessity to import high-octane gasoline – the existing refinery plants in the country would not be able to satisfy the demand of the rapidly growing number of automobiles. The deficit of gasoline will lead to European-level prices. The majority of the domestic oil companies do not have enough time to revamp existing refineries and build new ones because this process takes about seven years. Drying Up The Gas Tank Backward Industry For last 10 years in Russia there was no new large oil refinery plant (ORP) built. Five of the existing large refineries were launched before 1940, six – before 1950, eight – before 1960, and six – after 1960. After 1966 the only newly built oil refinery was Achinsky ORP (part of YUKOS), which was launched in 1982. More than a half (14 out of 25 Russian ORPs) do not have the necessary equipment for secondary processing of oil. About 6 percent of the refinery equipment in the working ORPs is less than 10

“We don’t know what ignited the fire,”
Really? A guy pours gasoline on himself. Tasers emit sparks. Sparks with gasoline vapors cause fires.
Please spend tax dollars investigating this.

So we feel that sleeping is something we can take for granted. Sleep helps us move and go forth. Similar to cars, a person without sleep will encounter bumpy roads along the way since chances are; they would get dizzy spells and long for a short nap or sleep. A person can only go so much when he lacks sleep. Further, he may underachieve and one day just stumble and fall.
We can only go towards a certain extent, but continuous abuse through foregoing the required amount of sleep that all people would need is a path in the wrong direction. There is a point where people may break down, and lack of energy to carry out things both in mind and body will prove to be costly at some point. Sleep is like gasoline and people just have to deal with it and live life through them.

If you've been wondering why gasoline prices have been so high lately with crude oil trading at only $66 per barrel, the answer can be found at the refineries. This week's TWIP (This Week in Petroleum) from the Energy Information Administration has some interesting commentary and, as always, abundant charts to tell the story of how retail gasoline prices have fallen for the second consecutive week, down five cents to $3.16 per gallon. First, it should be clear that this is not an oil problem. U.S. oil inventories, the biggest raw material cost for gasoline (duh!) have been at or above the range considered normal for this time of year. There is no oil problem - that will occur sometime in the future, maybe soon, we'll see. Yet, prices at the pump remain near record highs, particularly here on the West Coast where special formulation requirements and higher taxes almost always result in higher prices. Lucky us - at least there's no big brown cloud hanging over the Western U.S. (e

The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline today was $3.23 a gallon, up 2 cents compared with Tuesday, May 22. The average price is 37 cents higher today than it was a month ago, according to AAA, of Heathrow, Fla.
The average prices of midgrade unleaded and premium unleaded gasoline also are slightly higher compared with three days ago. Drivers are paying $3.42 a gallon for midgrade, up 1 cent, and $3.55 a gallon for premium, up 2 cents compared with Tuesday.
Diesel prices remained much lower than the high set in 2005. The national average price reported today was $2.92 a gallon, compared with the record $3.24 a gallon on Oct. 24, 2005.
Low gasoline inventories have been blamed for the high prices, with outages continuing to plague U.S. refiners. It looks like refiners are reluctant to invest capital to upgrade plants because they are unsure what effect the government’s push for biofuels will have on their future.

Yes, it sounds crazy, but it is really simple economics. The current rise in prices is due mainly to a shortage in refining capacity, not a shortage of oil. The government is pushing biofuels with many subsidies. That is causing the oil companies to reevaluate plans to increase refining capacity. It would be financially foolish for them to invest money if the demand is going to disappear due to the government’s biofuel policies.
Any way that you look at this, the consumer comes out a loser because of the government’s intervention in the private market. Even if biofuels are able to meet the demand, consumers will pay heavily. The cost won’t show up completely at the pump but it will be reflected in your tax bill. Ethanol and other biofuels can not compete with gasoline on the basis of the cost to produce it or with the amount of energy produced per gallon. The wisest thing t
