      I THINK I'M PARANOID - Garbage, 1998

These five case studies show that with innovation and a little planning, our dumps, sewers, and piles of manure are not necessarily the end of the line. Instead, they’re just the begi

When you're talking about organization there's a rule to live by that will save you all sorts of hassle: Garbage in, garbage out. You might have heard in other contexts but what I mean here is that once you bring something into your home something else has to go.We all have a finite amount of space and if you're like me every closet in your home is being used--I've never known anyone to have extra storage space because it's human nature to fill whatever closets and cabinets you may be blessed with to capacity. Think of gold fish, who will eat and grow as big as their tank allows--my junk kind of follows the same principles, absorbing any space I'll allow it.SO . . . since everyone has a limited amount of storage and I'd bet money your shelves are full every time you bring anything new int

      Garbage Picking in South Korea
I was on my way to yoga class when I spotted this table in the garbage. I took a closer look and saw the workmanship. I had to get to class but I was hoping it was still there when I returned. After class, I rushed home and it was still there. I called Curt (hubby) and told him I wanted to take it. He didn't care but only worried where would we put it. Please, that was the least of my concerns. So I went up to the guard to make sure it was really meant for the garbage. He left his post and came down to the garbage area with me. I pointed to the table and he gestured that I could take it. Really!!! It wasn't as heavy as it was large. He saw me struggling to get a good grip on it and he just took it from me. He carried it all the way up and into my apartment. Can you believe i

Though it did create some interesting rain drops on sea water effects, as you can see from this still image taken from the film. No, the point of interest in this week's posting lies with the amount of debris which the winds and currents churned up, to produce a long slick of flotsam and jetsam. What astonishes me is the sheer amount of true debris, garbage, and rubbish that you can see, hidden amongst the uprooted and broken bits of seaweed. Great Pacific Garbage Patch
I don't know how I didn't know about this sooner - how everyone doesn't know about this already - but there is a huge, continent-sized, pile of garbage floating in the Pacific Ocean. Or actually there are two masses that sometimes join together to create, by some accounts, an area that is twice the size of the entire United States. Why is this something that we care about! Why aren't we doing something about this? Who/what is to blame? Well, for starters, plastic. Plastic is believed to constitute 90 per cent of all garbage floating in the oceans. And there are garbage patches in most of the world's other oceans too. The UN Environment Programme estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of floating plastic. This is having devastating effects on marine life.

Some come into the store they open up their little bags and start showing diamond earrings that I have been seeing for the past 3 to 4 years the same old same old.  I even had one vendor coming in with designs I had in my store when I first opened.     Some of these vendors have been with us for years, and know very well what we have in our store what we demand from them for our clients, and still they want to bring this tired old junk.  One vendor last week gave me a look that could kill I guess he did not like what I said he was showing some tired old diamond earrings explaining to us that they are a good price.  My reply was it does not matter if they are only ten bucks if they do n

My Apologies to the Garbage Man
I don't even think about the fact that the New Orleans West Bank is a sub-tropical environment.  Having been born and raised here, it's normal for me to weed the garden at least 9 months out of the year.  I don't give much thought to the fact that if some of the weeds and junky, invasive vines are still growing in my garden in November, then ALL of the weeds and junky, invasive plants are still growing.  When that first little itch showed up on my arm, I didn't think twice about it.  Scratch it and move on.  Or not...Every spring, my yard guy, Tim, points out to me where any poison ivy is growing so we can carefully spray it with Roundup and dispose of it.  Every spring, despite his warnings and being VERY careful, I end up in the doctor's office, waiting for the pronouncement that "Yes, that's poison ivy".  But that's in the spring.  I didn't even think about the possibility that I could end up

Face The Facts, Brad Smith is “Garbage”
Sorry to those of you who love him because he is so “versatile”, and a “slash” player, and whatever else you want to throw between some quotes to make him sound better than he is. The truth is, Brad Smith is a bad WR. It seems like he drops at least one pass per game, and that can be extremely costly. Off the top of my head, I remember him dropping a critical first down pass this weekend from Clemens, which resulted in an interception. Also, how about that Washington game; lets not forget that; one could argue that he cost the Jets a win. Statistically speaking, Brad Smith catches less than half of the balls intended for him, 48% to be exact. Brad Smith, everyone’s favorite “gadget” player; too bad he can’t catch a pass.

The Value of Art… or Garbage.
Why does garbage sell so well? I’m talking about really crappy paintings and other art that goes for thousands or even millions of dollars. This is a rhetorical question of course, as I will give my own answer in a minute. Some might say that a piece is worth what the buyer is willing to pay or maybe it’s worth more if you are famous or have built up credibility. I don’t believe this to be entirely true, at least it shouldn’t be. The value of a painting should be based on the talent of the person, the technique, and the time, instead of their popularity. I can understand how one would pay a good amount for a painting because it makes them feel good or reminds them of something/someone, but would you really pay over $100 million because it makes you feel good? Even if you have butt loads of cash, if you pay $100 million for a dried up piece of canvas, you suck. (more…)

Breakfast Links: Word of the Year, Garbage & Marvel
Well the New Oxford American Dictionary (related to but clearly distinct from and not to be confused with the only lustworthy dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary) has gone and announced it’s word of the year…. locavore! A locavore is someone who eats local produce - you know farmers market style, good for the globe… all that kinda good stuff. And it’s brand new - only two years old! How cute! NOAD thinks is clearly a word on the move, exciting things in store for it and all that. And while your congratulating yourself on being part of that local eating movement you can also check out this game that tells you how good you’d be at managing NYC’s waste management! I, apparently, would not be that good sending out 1,897,871 tons of refuse across 1,100,499 miles. That doesn’t seem that awesome, although it’d be cool if the game also gave an estimate of what the city was actually doing. Amanda, one of the creators of the game, soundly

From Garbage Bin to Gallery - But is it Art?
From Garbage Bin to Gallery - But is it Art? Have you ever pretended to understand and appreciate an artwork in a gallery just so that you didn’t appear ignorant, I know I have. If you go into any contemporary art gallery you will most likely see people standing in front of artworks with expressions on their face that would suggest that they understand the artwork when in fact they have absolutely no idea what they are looking at. People’s reluctance to question the legitimacy or artistic value of an artwork for fear of appearing ignorant or just not cool enough to be able to engage with or understand the artwork has basically allowed artists to completely disregard the boundaries of artistic practice without consequence. The factors and characteristics that distinguish an artwork from any other object have virtually become obsolete which has allowed people to classify anything that is placed in a gallery as art. Because contemporary artists continue to push the boundaries

HFTH Special: The Sexiest Garbage-Men Of 2004
That’s it… I’m moving back home! Until I left the comfort and security of Mum’s sleepout, I never realised how good I had it. For instance, I could leave my empty beer bottles on the floor, secure in the knowledge that Mum would come in, collect the empties, rinse them and put them in the recycling bin. At most, I’d get a light-hearted telling-off, but I’d still be eating chilli for dinner. I didn’t have to do shit when I lived with my parents, and it was great! I could just sit back, let the garbage, filth and soiled undergarments pile up as I wallowed in my own crapulence. Every few months, Mum would give me the lecture… if I didn’t clean my room, she was going to kick me out, and she fucking meant it this time! If I didn’t whip out the garbage-bags and the vacuum cleaner double-quick, my ass was off the City Mission to eat scraps, live in a box of old clothes and play blackjack with Peg-Leg Willy, the drunken, one-legged hobo who lost his right leg in V

Money Saving Tips On Garbage Bags
To save money on garbage bags for the bathroom or a little wastebasket, Hubby and I use our plastic grocery bags we get at the store. The handles on the bags can be tied up and tossed out in the garbage can. In addition to that, use plastic bags that we sometimes have groceries in make great small garbage bags. Also paper towel cardboard rolls make a great neat way of storing them in our drawer

      Garbage Collector and events
A feature of Flex (and any decent programming language) is the garbage collector. What it does? Once it detects that an object in memory is no longer needed it will clean up the memory. Simple no? Well is not that simple: you may have finished your work with that object but there are references to it. In this case the garbage collector cannot collect that object. In Flex one of the main reasons this can happen is because of event handlers that are forgotten to the object. Let's take a look at the following code:   var myTestComponent:Canvas = null; myTestComponent = new Canvas(); myTestComponent.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,testHandler); //testHandler is a function myTestComponent = null; This code will destroy the component but the memory associated to it cannot be collected as a reference exists (the event callback function: testHandler). In order to be able to collect the object before you make the object null you need to do the following:   myTestComponent.removeEv

Garbage. What We Throw Away On The Streets
Last Night's Garbage"Each day the United States throws awayenough trash to fill 63,000 garbage trucks."—The Cass County Solid Waste Management DistrictIt all began on July 16, 2007, when one man decided he'd had enough. "You can't walk down a single street in New York City without the sight and smell of trash, rubbish, yesterday's news, and last night's garbage," he may have said to himself. "Everyone tosses things away: the fashionable, the leisure class, the chronically thirsty. What we need is the documentarist, a troubadour, perhaps, who can help us regard what we waste and reconsider what we discard in a whole new light. We will never look at last night's garbage in the same way."

      Garbage
If you have ever wondered, in the face of our ever-expanding landfills and increasingly elaborate packaging of consumer goods and consumption, what happens to the all the garbage, then Heather Rogers' informative and provocative new book, Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage, published by the New Press, is for you.It is not a shock that the United States is the number one producer of garbage on the planet; with just 5 percent of the global population we generate 30 percent of the world's trash. The average American throws away a staggering 4.5 pounds of rubbish daily -- that's 1,600 pounds each year, according to Rogers. And garbage is also a global problem; today the middle of the Pacific Ocean is six times more abundant with plastic waste than zooplankton. So how did we get to this point? Garbage production doubled in the U.S. over the past 30 years, yet waste is increasingly hidden, and the focus on recycling is fading along with it. Rogers says this situation came about thro

      Check the Garbage
One woman had her teenage daughter clean her room. The daughter proudly did just that, filling two huge trash bags of things she no longer wanted. Out of curiosity, the mother peeked into one of the bags to see what was being thrown away. In shock, she found a new tube of suntan lotion, two perfectly good sweaters, makeup, lotion, a picture frame, hair curlers, all good things. The daughter did not realize that just because the items were of no interest to her, they might be to someone else. After talking to her daughter, the mom turned around and listed the items on eBay, making a $35 profit on her daughter’s “junk.”

      Garbage Bags & Merlot
Pumpkin & Princess love each other. I know this for a fact. And I'm THRILLED about that! They want to play together. Talk. Cause trouble. Give Mommy a coronary. After school we have rest time in the MamaLee house. All 3 kids have their own rooms, and they have rest time for a minimum of 2 hours. This way, it's quiet in the house so that Sweetpea can nap and Mommy can find some sanity. I use that time to plan dinner, do some chores, return phone calls or just rest myself. Somedays I let them stay up for a special trip or a fun activity. I do NOT require Pumpkin and Princess to sleep. No. They can play QUIETLY.I would (and I have) let Pumpkin and Princess play together during rest time, but that only results in NOISE. Sometimes I send them outside, but I can't do that every day. The weather gets in the way at times!Today I asked them to be quiet too many times (problem #1, I know) - I have warned them recently that I would go up to their rooms with garbage bags and

      Garbage bin
Three years ago, when we were in the process of renovating our apartment, one of the things I specified to our designer was to have a garbage bin in the kitchen that's not only functional and utilitarian but also beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. She was quick to reply that, it was not going to be a problem because with the new innovations in kitchen designs, the garbage bin can be hidden under one of the cabinets that will just slide in and out for easy access. I didn't like the idea because, I don't have a big kitchen and I didn't want the garbage bin to cut into my storage space. The solution? She found this and I immediately said this is it. I didn't want to have one of those made of plastic or stainless. It's hand painted wood and very well made. The only downside was since it was customized it took a while to be delivered. I just love the design and it goes well with my kitchen decor. It sits well in this corner of my kitchen and it's been a conversation piece everytime
