Violence and murder are the most commonly used tools to gain respect, power, and money. Gangster movies show a rainbow of criminal activity like drug dealing, robbery, extortion, murder for hire, racketeering, and human trafficking. Name an illicit business and it's probably been shown in a gangster movie. The darker side of life has always captivated some movie viewers. It might be because everyone has a choice to be a John Q. Citizen or a Public Enemy outside of the law.There are plenty of well researched books, articles, and documentaries about the place of the gangster in movie history. Before this movie got out, I never even heard about Frank Lucas. Honestly, I never thought that a black guy could become so efficient in crime. Most of them are too busy shooting at each other just because they live in a different street name. Can’t seem to kill people for a proper reason let alone running an organized crime. American Gangster is wonderful entertainment and provides the fun you expect from a gangster film. With Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe in the two leads, American Gangster has it all, great powerful performances, suspenseful action scenes and chases, and a solid story which isn't all that original, but is told superbly. The build up is very strong, a slow start that emerges into an ending that throttles. Washington as Frank Lucas is like a whirlwind, he owns the screen. He is Lucas, big mouth, and a fearceful look in his eyes which almost seems to make his model wife burst into tears instantly. Crowe is good too trying to catch Lucas and meanwhile having some family problems, which provides for a nice extra story giving his character some background and backbone. Ruby Dee as Lucas's mother is amazing, but her role is very small. But still, in those few scenes she has she easily takes over. "American Gangster" is a pretentious name for a movie. I suppose the creators intended the film to be a genre reference point like the Brandenburg concertos are the template for Baroque orchestral music, American Gothic is the basic representation of American rural life, and Renault Le Car is the touchstone of French automotive engineering (just kidding). The ultimate gangster film is still Godfather- nobody will repeat lines from American Gangster five years hence- but AG certainly doesn’t disgrace the field.

Let me start by saying that this movie is NOT for children or people with needle phobias. It is graphic with explicit shots of people using heroin. Now given that wonderful opening.. I liked this movie! I love stories based on real truth. The characters in this movie were wonderfully portrayed and the story had a nice clip to it. If you can't see the movie, I really suggest you read this article. These men are fascinating both in their lack of ethics and their ideas of morality. My response is simple... It is a good thing that people who actually care and are concerned about their race and humanity in general are larger in number than men like these businessmen.

American Gangster is a movie that Rene really wanted to see. I was kind of ambivalent about seeing the film. Now, after seeing it, I'm still pretty ambivalent. The movie was interesting, and well acted, but the story was not very cohesive.
The two main characters share only a few scenes together, at the very end of the movie. They each have side stories, and there are a lot of characters in the film altogether. The main characters motivations are probably explained in detail somewhere, but there isn't enough time to explain in the movie. This makes their actions appear odd, even bizarre.
The movie is also filmed in a style I call 'minimal'. There is just barely enough light to illuminate the characters. I suppose it's supposed to be gritty and realistic, and it probably is in expensive Hollywood screening rooms with perfect projectors and new lamps. In a typical American multiplex at a mall, the movie is just muddy.
