A new Mario Kart game has touched down on Wii, imaginatively titled Mario Kart Wii. The graphics look like Double dash!!, the game comes packed with some cheapo looking steering wheel and it doesn't look anything special. So why is it worth buying?Mario Kart Wii is more of what Mario Kart lovers have loved for the past decade. Racing around a bunch of courses whilst trying to stay ahead of the pack and not get a red shell shot up your arse. Whilst there isn't anything majorly different with Mario Kart Wii in comparison to Mario Kart DS and those that came before - underneath it all are little tweaks here and there which have a great effect on proceedings. Mario Kart Wii is probably the most refined Mario Kart game to date. The game still includes (the love or hate it) snaking, but it's gon

      Burnout Paradise Game Review
I have played a lot of Burnout games in the past and to be perfectly honest I have never been a fan. This new Burnout Paradise game however is a lot different then the previous versions. There are several elements to that game that make it substantially better. First off you have the incredible crash sequences. I am talking about crash sequences that are very real to life unlike most car racing games out there were you can hit a guy head on at 60 mph and bounce off without damage. Try that in this game and your car will look like a soda can. They also have a new showdown mode where you can just get crazy bouncing all over the place. When you add that to the racing and stunt challenges it makes for quite and explosive game.

This game is one of the few that took a fun new concept, shit load of originality and ran a mile with it.Jet set radio is set around a group of 'rudies' known as GG. You begin as a boy named Beat and over the course of the game you encounter other rudies who will set you tasks to prove you're cool enough for them to hang with you. Over the course of the game you'll encounter rival rudie crews who will make an attempt to skate and graffitti all over your turf. These missions have you skating around the area to graffitti over your rival rudies' tags, track them down and then tag them to put them out of action. The premise of the game is

No more heros game review wii
No More Heroes is unlike anything... blah blah blah. I've already said this. The great thing about this game is how quirky it is and how crazy the story line is. It is not overly dramatic or complicated, though it does not really explain much. It leaves a lot to the imagination in the way of how the main character, Travis Touchdown (who has nothing to do with football), got a light saber (or as the game calls it, a "beam katana") or exactly why he kills in the first place (though that's sort of explained, not really though). Something that ties into both the story line and the game play is the humor of it. This game is one of the funniest games I have ever played. With humor ranging from porn movie names to taking a dump (which is how you save your game), the game always pleases. The game

      Game review: Burning rangers
In the midst of alot of gaming sites reporting the possibility of there being a new Burning rangers game, I've decided to review the original game. Plus, I also decided I wanted to make more of an effort to review not only new(ish) games, but also oldies from yesteryear. I know this was a game many did not get a chance to experience, but I was fortunate enough to due to a close friend of mine owning a Sega Saturn and a copy of this game. So if you've yet to play Burning rangersor are just curious as to how it plays and what I think of it, then read on...Burning rangers is like something straight out of the 80's. It takes everything you loved about Japanese cartoons from that decade growing up such as Voltron and Ulysses. A funky sing-a-long theme song, a futuristic setting, a couple of mecha's and a team of heroes in tight spandex, short jackets, white gloves, headbands and dodgy haircuts. This is the world of the Burning rangers. It's almost as thought Sega saw you coming. So let

      Game review: Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy is the absolute shit. A masterclass in platforming. A long love letter to all Super Mario fans across the globe. So much is right about this game it's unreal. Nintendo approached this game as though Super Mario Sunshine didn't exist. It's almost difficult to imagine that the same team that brought us that water spraying, holiday themed bullshit actually managed to deliver a game that is out of this world...literally, with all puns intended. Many cite Super Mario 64 as the best 3D platformer ever. Whilst I wasn't a huge fan of the game (I found it quite boring to be honest), there's no denying that it had a major impact on 3D platformers and that every game that came after had tried to mimic it and just plain rip it off in some cases. With this in mind and given Super shitty sunshine's lukewarm response, it would've been easy for Nintendo to have just pretty much re-created the essence of what made Super Mario 64 a success: make it look better, tweak

      Game review: Sin and punishment
I could moan about why this game wasn't released outside of Japan for 7 years, but I hadn't even heard of it until a few weeks ago. So it'd be stupid for me to moan about getting this game late when I was oblivious to it for the 7 years that many pined for it. I am however still grateful to Nintendo for giving this a European release, because the game is pretty decent and satisfies my craving for a good old retro shoot 'em up. Though I think I bit off more than I could chew and got a tad more than I initially bargained for when I downloaded this from the Wii shop.Sin and punishment is retro gaming for those who like their games old skool and I mean OLD skool. Sin and punishment is like a cross between StarFox and Space harrier. That may not sound like an enticing mix for some gamers, but trust me when I say that it works well and makes for a pretty fun game. Don't ask me why I decided to review this game. It's best you don't ask me why I post half the stuff I do on this stupid blog. But I felt like doing a review of it. I've decided I'm going to try and do at least one review a week of every game I've played to date. I'll probably stick to that for all of 2 weeks, but we'll see how it goes. Talking about Sonic rush adventure a couple of posts back got me thinking about it predecessor Sonic rush. So I decided I'd say some kind words about it. Given it's one of the few Sonic games that I actually liked enough to buy.Sonic rush plays like pretty much every other Sonic game, though it comes with some new gameplay altering twists. First off is that the game is played across two screens. Sonic and Blaze will shoot up into the top screen and swoop down into the bottom screen during their races through stages. It's a minor thing, but it really does add to the frantic pace of the game and the sense of speed and freedom the characters hav

Game review: Streets of rage 3
I hate this game so much and think that it is so terrible, that it deserves a review from yours truly. I spoke briefly about this game in my ninth podcast. But I felt I should do a written review. Just to bring the message home about how terrible this really game is. Streets of rage 3 stole my money and hours of my life and I will never forgive it for that. NEVER!Streets of rage 1 and 2 were great games. The first game was fun, if a little repetitive and the second game was a flat out masterpiece. So how in the world did Sega mess up so badly with its sequel!? Easy. They changed the formula and stripped the game of everything that made the last two games fun. Streets of rage 3 tries to fuse the best of the first 2 games, whilst throwing some new stuff into the mix - but it doesn't quite pull it off. Not by a long shot. There are some new additions which are welcomed: Axel, Blaze and the rest of the crew have a larger set of moves and are able to dodge up and down the screen and can al

10 pixels in - my first video game review
Not too long after my recent post talking about how the boys have transitioned from a TV addiction to a computer game addiction, I got an e-mail from a nice lady offering me a sneak preview of “the first video game made for kids 3-6 on Nintendo DS.” The boilerplate advertised that “Storybook DS features skill-based mini-games and read-aloud fairy tale adventures for shared play and interaction between mom and child.” I wrote back to say thanks for the offer, but we only play games on the PC and we don’t have any game consoles. She wrote back to say, “No problem, we’ll loan you a DS console for a while to play to the game. You can keep the game cartridge, and send back the console when you’re done.” Hard to say no to an offer like that, isn’t it? And that’s how someone who doesn’t really like video games becomes a video game reviewer - or at least whores her children out as video game reviewers. Let the record

      Game review: P.N 03
P.N 03 was a Capcom developed game which was released exclusively for the GameCube back in 2003. Upon hearing about this game and seeing screenshots I was incredibly excited about it. The guy responsible for Resident evil was designing the game, it had a kick arse looking female lead and would involve robots lasers and big explosions. I was so sold on this game that I pre-ordered it online so I could be guaranteed it on release day. If I could go back in time I wouldn't make that mistake again. As far as I'm concerned Capcom stole my £39.99.P.N 03 is old skool. From the basic controls, to the limited continues, heavy punishment for being hit and the ability to rack up combos by killing enemies in quick succession. It's an old skool game through and through with a slick look and a female protagonist who likes to shake her arse for no apparent reason, lift her legs in the air and do the splits. My kinda woman.P.N 03 has players controlling Vanessa and navigating her throug

      Game Review: Hapland
Hapland is an ingenious little time-waster of a puzzle. All you have to do is get the two torches list on the wheel. To do this, you have to activate the various objects (shown, or hidden) in the picture by clicking. Couldn’t be simpler, right? Shyea. Right. Good luck. Little clues abound, and the clickable items all nudge about helpfully. But discovering what your tools are and how to use them will have you scratching your head for some time. It’s all put together very smoothly, with cute little animated stick figures. Give it a try. You can solve the whole thing with less than thirty clicks, although some of them need to be timed well. If you make a mistake, click the double arrows on the bottom right to try again. And if you really get stuck, here’s the walkthrough. Hapland, and its two sequels, are some of the thousands of free online flash games you can play here at Imvite. Jon

      Game review: Metroid Prime
Samus is a bad bitch. I probably shouldn't have referred to her as a bitch. I bet she's rolled into a ball and speeding to my house with murderous intent as I type this. I'm sure she'll forgive me when she realises I've got some good words about her very first 3D adventure.Metroid Prime is not your average first person shoot 'em up. Nintendo have coined it as more of a first person adventure and this sums up the game pretty well. It is not divided into stages or missions as with most FPS's. Instead the game world is one huge area in which Samus must explore. What also causes this game to stray from standard FPS territory is what Samus is able to do. Being a woman she's naturally able to do things that fellas in other first person shooters can't do. Such as curling herself up into a ball and rolling around at top speed, using a grapple beam to swing across chasms and nabbing a perfect lock on her enemies amongst other things. The straying from FPS territory also spreads to the

      Game Review: Boomshine
Boomshine is another dirt-simple and addictive game, immensely helped along by its serene and smooth graphics. The idea: At each level of difficulty, there are more and more little circles flowing around the box. Pick one to explode. When it explodes, it takes other balls near it along with it, and so on in a cascade of little explosions. Your job is to get a minimum number of hits, which increases as levels get higher. According to Digg, less than 4% of attempts on level 12 have been successful. Play Boomshine online at Imvite. Jon

      Game Review: Battle Pong
Battle Pong was originally developed by Scapegoat Software under Linux for the IceBox gaming console. Battle Pong is a twist on the old game of Pong. Instead of simply scoring points whenever you get the ball past your opponent, each miss costs you some life. A missed ball rebounds back into play, until either you or your opponent is dead. Furthermore, whenever the ball hits one of the blue side barriers in your court, you gain a power up. Power ups let you shoot, increase the size of your paddle, and various other things. Most of the power ups I found to be less than helpful, but since you have to maintain your eye on the ball while deciding whether or not to use a power up, that’s part of the fun. The game let’s you play 1 or 2 players at three levels of difficulty. Play Battle Pong online at Imvite. Jon

Game Review : Combat Mission - Shock Force
Combat Mission, titles which are known for their line of top WWII strategy games, has not only produced a title with a new engine, but has turned the clock forward into modern-day warfare. The story takes place in the winter of 2008 where terrorists from all nationalities started making their move into different countries well before any talk of heightened security. Once they were in place they kept quiet and waited for their call. Soon tips were pouring in about suspect baggage and before long there were terror alerts. Now, with the sleeper cells already in place, security was nearly pointless. You will be able to fight with tons of units comprised of machine guns, anti-tank personnel, mortars, tanks and other vehicles. You will also have the ability to call in valuable air strikes to soften up targets. The damage modeling is where the game really excels. Units can take different damage depending on where they are hit, which adversely effects what the unit will be able to do. For examp

      Game Review: Mah Jong Solitaire
Mah Jong Solitaire is erroneously known simply as Mah Jong. Mah Jong actually refers to a four player rummy like game using the same set of tiles. In Mah Jong Solitaire you are presented with a stack of ornately decorated Chinese tiles laid out in a grid-like set up. There are four of each type of tile. Your job is to find matching pairs of exposed tiles that lie on the ends of the lines, eliminating them from the pile. Your job is done when all the tiles are removed. It’s pretty straightforward solitaire, but do watch out for two things: First of all, you often have a choice as to which two of three matching tiles to remove, and your choice may make the difference between winning or losing the game. Blindly removing tiles as they come to notice is a sure way to lose the game. Second, although most tiles match identical pictures, some of the flower tiles match even though they don’t look exactly identical. Game Review: XBound
X-bound is a neat take on the classic game of Breakout. Sure, you’ve seen souped up versions of Breakout, such as Arkanoid and DX-Ball, but those games merely add pretty pictures and a few special abilities. Xbound puts you into the center of a sink, trying to stop the ball (or balls!) from falling down the drain while you work to eliminate the surrounding ring of bricks. The graphics are neat. The ball blurs as it sails around in mathematically appropriate parabolas and arcs. There are level-ups and falling fruit. What more could you want. Play it here on Imvite. Jon

      Game Review: Space Invaders
I can’t help being into Retro Gaming. All the fancy graphics and so on they add to modern games don’t make up when there’s a lack of game play. Don’t get me wrong: there are many great modern games. But modern games are not any better, or worse, than the classics games. Prettier, and bulkier. But not better. Space Invaders, which practically invented the arcade game industry is a case in point. Bare bones graphics, simple game play, and still as additive as it was back in 1980. All you have to do is move your little ship back and forth on the screen, using the space bar to fire. The enemy ships march across the screen firing down at you at random, and trying to land on your planet. Once in a while, a higher valued ship crawls along the top of the screen. Nail it and gain some bonus points. There’s really nothing left to say about Space Invaders that hasn’t been said for almost thirty years. Game Review: Stackopolis
Stackopolis is a truly simple and addictive game of block manipulation. You’re given a platform with numerous blocks stacked in a random order, and a picture of how the blocks are supposed to be stacked. You have 60 seconds to move the blocks into the correct position. How simple can you get? Well, not so simple, after all. You have to recognize the pattern and envision it on the platform. To move blocks to some locations, you must be able to see the locations so that you can click it. Only, when a pile of blocks is blocking your line of sight, you have to move those out of the way first. So you first have to clear away obstructing piles of blocks, build the back rows, and then build the front rows. And you have a seriously short time limit. The controls couldn’t be easier: click a block to remove it from the screen, and click another location to place it. Like so many games with dirt simple concepts, but challenging tasks, it’s a whole lot of fun. Stackopolis’

      Super Jazzman PC Game Review
Super Jazzman is a real homage to the classic 2D Adventure games popularized on the PC in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. It offers a great adventure experience if that's a genre you enjoy and have missed, but has a few flaws that keep it from greatness. In the end though, if you like... Alien Flux PC Game Review
Alien Flux is an all out shoot em up and by far Puppy Games best offer. For one, it's not a direct remake of a classic arcade game, feels newer, and has superior graphics, sound, etc. compared to Ultratron and Titan Attacks. I would describe it as an action packed hybrid of Robotron and Asteroids.... [To read the full article, check out the blog. It has games, videos, and more!]

The Warriors PC Game Review (also for Mobile Devices)
Warriors is basically a portable RPG battle- not a full blown RPG- but rather a turn-based fighting tournament. The gameplay consists of creating a 4-man party and then fighting other parties of paladins, ninjas, warriors, and the like. Each character takes a turn and has a limited selection of abilities or things to do (typically somewhere between 1-3 actions). If your warriors triumph, you move onto the next team to battle in the tournament ladder. The game is awful as a PC title, and is definitely better suited for a mobile device (though it goes from 4 on 4 to 3 on 3), but is still a straight forward and somewhat repetitive experience.Gameplay: 5/10Pros: The gameplay definitely recaptures the old RPG turn-based battles of classic 8/16-bit RPGs (this is NOT ChronoTrigger or Secret of Mana mechanics people!). Gamesplay is straight-forward with easy to play mechanics.Cons: There's a reason people hated the random battles from RPGs of Yore! Selecting attack and then the bad guy t
