Disapproval of George Bush as set a new record. Bush now has “the highest disapproval rating of any president in the 70-year history of the Gallup Poll.” Currently Bush 28% approve and 69% disapprove of Bush. This exceeds Harry Truman’s disapproval rating of 67% in 1952. In other questions, 63% now agree that the Iraq [...]

Here's a Gallup poll that does a pretty good job of busting stereotypes and generalizations about Muslims' attitudes toward democracy. Do Muslims Want Democracy and Theocracy?By John L. Esposito and Dalia Mogahed Cutting across diverse Muslim countries, social classes, and gender differences, answers to our questions reveal a complex and surprising reality. Substantial majorities in nearly all nations surveyed (95% in Burkina Faso, 94% in Egypt, 93% in Iran, and 90% in Indonesia) say that if drafting a constitution for a new country, they would guarantee freedom of speech, defined as "allowing all citizens to express their opinion on the political, social, and economic issues of the day." However, while acknowledging and admiring many aspects of Western democracy, those surveyed do not

Folks! Have you checked out today’s top news that made headlines in our local mainstream newspapers today? I’m talking about Gallup International and their fantastic ‘Trends in Democracy’ survey results released on the 3rd of December 2007 that made UMNO and Barisan Nasional party members walk like some proud Egyptians today. :-) Their Malaysian results have been over sensationalized by the local press really. I took a peek at their survey records and found that their field survey conducted from the 2nd of July to the 5th of August 2007 only involves 1,250 respondents. That was pathetic! Really pathetic! Heck, I can do a better online poll on this silly blog! MalaysiaKini! HarakahDaily! Malaysia Today! Do some counter-intelligence operations fast! Related Post: Malaysian press is a pack of nonsense! I have stayed out of the political realm on here for quite some time, other than stating who I am supporting in the ‘08 Presidential election. However, this I found interesting.
Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others
PRINCETON, NJ — Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate their mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.
The basic data — based on an aggregated sample of more than 4,000 interviews conducted since 2004 — are straightforward.
I suppose that would explain why so many Democrats I know are all about the doom-and-gloom, huh?
According to a Gallup survey released yesterday, almost 8 out of 10 adult Americans say that economic conditions in the United States are getting worse, the highest level of pessimism since Gallup began asking the “getting better”/”getting worse” question in this format back in 1991. Responding to, “Right now, do you think that economic conditions in the country as a whole are getting better or getting worse?”, 78% of Americans said the U.S. economy was getting worse, while only 13% said it was getting better. The survey was conducted from November 11-14 among 1,014 American adults.
27% of respondents said current economic conditions in the United States are either “excellent” or “good,” 44% say they are “only fair,” and 28% say they are “poor.” These figures are down slightly from last month, and are considerably lower since the beginning of 2007. In January, 52% rated the economy as “excellent” or “good.”

Capital punishment is overwhelmingly supported by the American people.Sixty-nine percent of Americans support the Death Penalty and the majority say death penalty is applied fairly. Highest point was in 1994, but its risen in the last 4 years. The Oct. 4-7 Gallup poll indicates that 69% of Americans respond "yes" when asked this question: "Are you in favor of the death penalty for a person convicted of murder?" This level of support for the death penalty is generally in line with the level of support that Gallup has measured in 13 polls featuring this question since 1999.Most people do not know the danger that innocent people will be executed because of errors in the criminal justice system. Most Americans do not know the reasons, why innocent people are wrongly convicted in capital cases. The reasons included:eyewitness error - from confusion or faulty memory.government misconduct - by both the police and the prosecution.junk science - mishandled evidence or use of unqualified "experts

Back in August, Gallup ran a poll asking people about their opinions on 25 different industry sectors. Respondents were asked how they felt about each industry. The real estate industry was one of only 9 industries that received a net negative score. The real estate industry rates just slightly better than airlines (the butt of all standup comedy jokes) and lawyers (What do you call 10,000 attorneys buried up to their necks in sand?....... Not enough sand). Unbelievably, real estate was ranked below the sports industry (steroids, dog fighting) and the movie industry.
And in an even more disturbing note, only 2 industries have had a worse drop in their image over the last 4 years: oil and gas, and the federal government.
NAR has assessed its members $30 to apply to the Public Awareness Image Campaign. This amounts to almost $40,000,000 being spent to make our image better than the industry that fuels the war in Iraq and the industry that spe
Just 14% of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress.
This 14% Congressional confidence rating is the all-time low for this measure, which Gallup initiated in 1973. The previous low point for Congress was 18% at several points in the period of time 1991 to 1994.
Congress is now nestled at the bottom of the list of Gallup’s annual Confidence in Institutions rankings, along with HMOs. Just 15% of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in HMOs. (By way of contrast, 69% of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the military, which tops the list. More on this at galluppoll.com on Thursday).
It’s worth remembering that Congress is basically nothing more than a mechanism for the representation of the people’s wishes. We all can’t go to Washington. So we elect men and women and send them off in our stead. It’s not an optimal situation, it seems to me, when such a low percentage of average Americans
A new Gallup poll shows that Americans aren't at all optimistic about the economy. Nearly 7 in 10 feel that the economy is getting worse. This is the most negative reading in almost six years. Gallup adds: "For the first time this year, a majority of Americans are negative about the employment market, saying it is a bad time to find a quality job."Other findings: only one in three believe that the economy is good or excellent and the percentage who believe that the economy is getting better fell from 28% to just 23%."When asked about the most pressing financial problems their family faces today, Americans mention healthcare costs, lack of money or low wages, and oil and gas prices," Gallup reports. "Healthcare costs are mentioned by 16% of Americans while 13% say low wages and 11% say oil and gas prices. These percentages are virtually unchanged from last month."The survey was performed June 11-14.You may hear all the fluff on TV about the rising stock market, tax cuts and the suppose

There is a new round of Gallup Polls out today. The top lines:
Missouri - McCaskill 49 Talent 45 (11-4)
Montana - Tester 50 Burns 41 (11-3)
New Jersey - Menendez 50 Kean 40 (11-3)
Rhode Island - Whitehouse 48 Chafee 45 (11-3)
Tennessee - Corker 49 Ford 46 (11-4)
Virginia - Allen 49 Webb 46 (11-4)
Certainly the only real outlier in this poll is Montana, where pretty much every other pollster is seeing movement 'for' Burns, not Tester. Missouri seems to confirm my own thoughts that McCaskill is pulling ahead if only by a bit. Gallup is the second pollster showing Rhode Island as up in the air (did I make that call too quick?).
Good news for the GOP (besides RI) is another poll showing Corker leading Ford and the second poll in the past few showing Allen up by three.
