As we have become more aware of the impact that our living has on this planet, we also begin to recognize the effects of our dying. I came across this brief (and nostalgia-inducing) post about eco-burials and was inspired to contemplate the greening of our attitudes toward death. The traditional options: sealing yourself in an [...]

The Pet industry is a multi-billion dollar one, with many different opportunities for the franchise industry to move in, and try to dominate things in different niches. It's actually neeshes, according to my friend, Jim Kukral. Some other friends of...
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to mock yet another topic dear to people’s hearts: pet funerals.
We have come a long way since the days of burying Fifi in the old Adidas shoe box in the backyard that is for sure. I remember when my first pet died when I was like eight. We had [...]

The Funeral for Conklin's slutty wife was today. All her relatives flew in for the memorial service. I can just imagine the clan that spawned her. I'm thinking one or more of them has been a guest on the Jerry Springer show, but I'm just guessing. Maybe she was just the black sheep of the family; the black, trailer trash, slutty, uneducated, rude, and obviously mentally disturbed sheep of the family, and the rest are upstanding, respectable members of society who were simply ashamed of her misguided ways.Yeah, that's likely. I'm glad I wasn't invited because I don't like funerals and here's why: Funerals are a major buzz kill. There's something depressing about death. I don't know what it is. And everyone loses their sense of humor at a funeral. Every time I walk into a funeral and se
Today I played my bagpipes at the final funeral for the Warwickshire Firefighters who were tragically killed a few weeks ago. The whole thing was very moving. It started off marching the family from their house the short distance to the fire station, where the hydraulic platform was waiting with the coffin, flanked by Firefighters [...]
Do you ever imagine your own funeral?I am not asking because I am suicidal or want to die or anything, I am just asking because sometimes I imagine my own funeral. I wonder who would be there, I wonder if people would really be sad and I wonder how fast people would forget me?Sometimes I also imagine a bad accident and I wonder who would come and visit me to the hospital, who would be the first one I would call and who would really worry about me?I guess all of theese thoughts are about uncertanty of my meaning in mine and other peoples life. Do I put my permanent print on the people I meet or am I just like water on your body, you feel it when it is there, but when it is dry it is forgotten and untraceable?Am I?constantly moving and fastly disappearing as waterorhard, stable and cold like a stoneorhot and destructive as fireornever ending and forever exsisting like the everchanging skyorlight and invisible but neccessary for living, like airoreverything and nothing of the above...?Who
Author: Kacy CarrThe last goodbye at a funeral leaves you reminiscing about the good times, also leaving a trail of fond memories of the dearly departed. But after a funeral you find that it can also leave a huge debt hanging over your head. The cost to bury a loved one can run into the thousands for a decent burial? What is a decent burial? What is the difference between decent and not so decent? The mind boggles. For that extra few bob does the coffin of the decent funeral have a more highly polished finish. Does the deceased have more words said at the service? Well let me tell you a little secret. Blurred vision/bloodshot eyes hamper the sight of the congregation, with all the crying it is hard to focus on any casket. Words spoken at the mass are rarely heard. Too many other thoughts overpower the emotional sentiments, and one is worry on how the bill is going to be paid. This is not the day for extravagance; imagine going to the theatre to watch a show but the curtains never open, s
Yesterday I went with some friends to pay respects to the family of an acquaintance who died this week.In Qatar and other Gulf countries it is very important to pay a visit to the family of deceased people you know. Whereas in the West a person may be given space and privacy, grief in Qatar is a more communal affair. When we arrived, my acquaintance had already been buried. Muslims should be buried as soon as possible, and this is normally means on the same day. Before being buried, their bodies are washed. Prayer (D’ah) takes place, but this is not the sholat, where people bow and prostrate themselves. Prayer instead takes the form of chanting verses from the Qu’ran. After a person dies, their eyes will be closed and their body covered with a shroud. Before being taken to the burial ground, their body will be washed. Only men may accompany the body to the burial ground. When we arrived at my acquaintance’s house, we greeted his relatives. An introduction was muttered before we shoo

There is a possiblity that we may have to attend a funeral for a family member. Someone on my husband’s side of the family (obviously) is very ill. Death will be soon, we are told. We do not do well at funerals. No one does, I’d imagine. It is sheer terror for us though. Walking into a funeral home is nearly impossible, then you add in the fact that there’s coffins.. no no no…

Baby Boomers Putting New Spin On FuneralsInstead of traditional funerals, boomers are planning "celebrations" and services that memorialize personalities, forgoing Amazing Grace played on the organ for the Rolling Stones' music through a sound system. From slide presentations, videos, slot machines, camping themes and more. The 'funneral' becomes a showplace of ones life.Inside his Phoenix funeral home, Craig Hansen has re-created a casino where mourners, in honor of the departed, played slot machines.Money dropped into the machines is donated to the deceased's favorite charity. At another farewell, the funeral director simulated a campsite because the deceased had loved to camp. He pitched a tent and brought in a faux fire. And, recently, when an armored truck wouldn't fit through the door of the funeral home, the truck was parked in the driveway with a banner that read, "You can't take it with you."Hansen and funeral directors like him have a unique window into the 21st-century
Christian extremists protesting at the funeral services of slain American military personnel is nothing new, but it has lost no power to enrage me. Now it is in the news again following a federal court's ruling to restrict the protests. Of course, the group doing the protesting claims that they have no intention of ending their protests. In case you missed out on hearing about this travesty when it was making headlines previously, the short version is that members of Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church have been picketing the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq. Why? According to the Mansfield News Journal, members of this church actually believe that "the deaths are God's punishment for the country's tolerance of homosexuals."The recent ruling, directed at Westboro Baptist, upheld a state law which restricts protesters from being within 300 feet of cemeteries around the burial service. Some view this as a free speech issue and argue that church members should have the righ
This time around the topic for Woman to Woman which is hosted so kindly by Lei of My Many Colored Days and by Morning Glory of Seeds From My Garden is the following:
“Is it really a family night out?” Share your views regarding children under age 5 attending formal events such as funerals, concerts, weddings, even church services. We hope that those of you who have “tried and true” tips and tricks up your sleeve will share those as well.
To be completely honest, I feel entirely incompetent to even be writing a post on this topic. Fortunately I have never been to a funeral so I have nothing to offer there. As far as concerts go, if I am spending the money to listen to some magnificent music then I am most definitely going to spend even more money and hire a sitter so I can enjoy the concert. Unless of course it is a concert to teach cultural appreciation to kids, but more likely than not those children will be over five.
When it comes to weddings (more&he

Expensive journeys to funerals - you are trying my patience.
Why do people do this? Spend gobs of cash on sudden journeys around the globe, to come to someone's funeral? Who benefits from this? Certainly not the dead person.
You better not spend a lot of money on coming to my funeral. ...
