The Myth of Fundamentalist Atheism is Alive and Well
Image via WikipediaThere is no such thing as "fundamentalist atheism." Those who use the label misunderstand the meaning of fundamentalism. It is not a synonym for close-mindedness, but a construct with meaning that renders it inapplicable to atheism. Unfortunately, the Institute for Humanist Studies does not appear to realize this. In a recent article by Doug Thomas, we see the myth of "fundament

      The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Mohsin Hamid has written a brilliant book. Gripping, taut with suspense, and spooky with its sense of impending foreboding, I was enthralled with the work of an author who writes at the peak of his art. The Reluctant Fundamentalist, I picked up at a book sale at a bargain. I dilly-dallied before buying it - is it readable I wondered, in the awful "let me try and see if the book is readable in a

A questionable voice - The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid
Having just finished Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, it was a pleasure to stumble upon an interview with the author (on his site, via Powells.com) where he discussed the process that led him to choose the narrative voice of the novel. I had tried variations of minimalism in the third person, with voices ranging fable to [...] Share and Enjoy:

If you're single and happen to be in a swinging part of an Arab state, some of the words here can be very useful. ...when we meet the black-eyed virgin with her black hair and white face – praised be He who created night and day. What hair! What a chest! What a mouth! What cheeks! What a figure! What breasts! What thighs! What legs! What whiteness! What softness! Without any creams – no Nivea, no vaseline. No nothing! … how soft will a black-eyed virgin be, when she comes to you so tall and with her beautiful face, her black hair and white face - praised be He who created night and day. … There is no god but Allah. He told us that if you entered one of the palaces, you would find ten black-eyed virgins sprawled on musk cushions. … When they

In cinema, the first attempts were perhaps made by [[Masoud Dehnamaki]]. Dehnamaki, a famous neo-fundamentalist, made his first documentary film "Poverty and Prostitution" in 2002. His next documentary was "Which Blue, Which Red", which is about the rivalry between the Iranian capital’s two football teams, Esteqlal and Persepolis,

Then You Might Be a Fundamentalist
What is a fundamentalist? Are you one? Would you like to be?Although the media and popular speech refer to Muslim fundamentalists, I am not talking about them. Nor am I talking about people who are a bit slow. Fundamentalism is an historic Christian movement, even though it is difficult to define. Here is a helpful resource that contains this bit of history:The term `fundamentalism' has its origin in a series of pamphlets published between 1910 and 1915. Entitled "The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth," these booklets were authored by leading evangelical churchmen and were circulated free of charge among clergymen and seminarians. By and large, fundamentalism was a response to the loss of influence traditional revivalism experienced in America during the early years of the twentieth century. This loss of influence, coupled with the liberalizing trends of German biblical criticism and the encroachment of Darwinian theories about the origin of the universe, prompted

Who's Afraid of the Fundamentalist Wolf?
Everybody, it seems, is out to appease the fundamentalists, whether they be saffron, green or dark blue. Especially so, if the appeasers happen to be politicians. Taslima Nasreen has decided to withdraw some lines from the second volume of her memoirs, Dwikhandita, because her descriptions of 1980s Bangladesh under military rule hurt the sentiments of the Jamaat-ul-Islami. Of course, this was after Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian foreign minister, suggested that those seeking asylum in India should take care not to hurt the sentiments of their fellow citizens. Her decision has been warmly welcomed by CPI(M) representatives, despite the fact that Comrade Prakash Karat had at one time thundered against the bourgeois parties’ inability to fight fundamentalism. Meanwhile, in Amritsar, the Shiro

David Attenborough attacked by Fundamentalist apes
EO broadcasted Sir David's "Life of Mammals" series in the Netherlands, respecting the 5 mn of edition allowed by the BBC.But Evangelische Omroep / the Evangelical Broadcasting Organisation is a Christian fundamentalist channel, the parts edited were key to explain evolution (ie "our closest relatives" becoming "the apes"), and one whole episode was censored. Flemmish radicals tend to upset me these days : when they don't fuel hatred and racism, they promote ID and creationism. Both sides of what's left of the Belgian border.David Attenborough is not dead yet*, he is quite angry, and so should we all. This battle is worth fighting for the great white Dave.* see "David Attenborough, one life on Earth" (20070716)** see "Red blogule to Luc van den Brande" (20070627)

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. 9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt. 8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God. 7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees! 6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky. 5 - You are willing t

Saiful Mujani: From fundamentalist to pluralist
Almost a decade after reform began to take place in Indonesia, the country's political leaders still struggle to live out their new-found democratic ideals. "Political parties are an important element in democracy, but they have failed to conduct a proper recruitment process. Just show me capable people in political parties. Many of them are good in mobilizing masses because they have money. Very few of them have expertise and technocratic capacities," executive director of the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) Saiful Mujani told The Jakarta Post recently. "And you can see that current capable ministers like Sri Mulyani, Boediono and Mar'ie Pangestu are not from political parties, they are intellectuals from universities," he added. He added than another aspect that could help strengthen democracy was pluralism. The low acceptance of diversity within society would result in a horizontal conflict, and the energy of the state might be exhaustively absorbed in tackling the problem. "

School Board Bows to Fundamentalist, Restricts Gore's Film
It turns out that the NSTA are not the only people who want to restrict student access to An Inconvenient Truth. The Federal Way School Board has implemented new restrictive rules for teachers screening the film in response to a complaint from a single parent. The parent in question, Frosty Hardison, asserts:"Condoms don't belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is. ... The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD." More disturbing is the response of the school board. New rules implemented this week state that any teacher showing the film, or who has shown the film, must present "a "credible, legitimate opposing view". School Board President Ed Barney was specifically quoted as saying,Students should hear the persp

The Bush Christian Right Israeli Fundamentalist War
Waging WarTo Fulfill Prophecy The American Christian Right Israeli AllianceJewish voters have long been considered a stronghold of the Democratic Party. But with tensions in the Middle East at an all-time high and terror attacks becoming common occurrences in Israel, Jewish Americans have found some of the strongest support for the state of Israel coming from an unlikely place: the far Christian right of the Republican Party.Bible ProphecyThe Jewish state is a necessary step on the way to the second coming of Jesus, according to book of Revelation. The Christian right in America believe the Jews are "The Chosen People," and one day will even choose the right messiah. These are the people generating the spiritual energy fueling George Bush's war on global terrorism. In the twinkling of an eye, born-again Christians are sucked into heaven in an event known as the Rapture. Chaos descends and an Antichrist ruler bearing the mark 666 takes over. There is one world government, economy and re

      True Religion: A Fundamentalist Perspective
That is a way above average headline for me, I must say. But I digress...The actual purpose of this post is to follow up on the fascinating case of True Religion Apparel, which showed up in my Amazing Skrinking P/E Ratio Screen post the other day. Like the other eight stocks that showed up in that screen, TRLG is growing EPS and Revenues very rapidly and yet their P/E ratio just keeps getting lower and lower. What we have here is a company whose earnings and revenues grew over the past year at a clip in excess of 200% and yet their trailing P/E has shrunk from a modest 28 to a minuscule 16. Given a relatively modest 22% estimated 5 year annual growth rate, this stock is trading at a laughably tiny 0.69 PEG Ratio. Clearly, the market as a whole is betting that TRLG will miss these EPS growth estimates by a mile. And short sellers are betting heavily that TRLG is going to fail, with an amazing 44% of float sold short. That's 16 days to cover, my fiends. That puts TRLG in the company of s
