How Google Fuels Its Idea Factory
"Leading up to Google's first-quarter earnings report on Apr. 17, investors couldn't have been more bearish. They had knocked the stock down 35% since the start of the year, concerned that a weak economy would finally hurt the search giant's advertising business. But Google (GOOG) defied skeptics—and the economic downturn—with a surprisingly strong showing that sent the stock soaring 20% the next day. More than anything, Google's continued prosperity is a testament to its ability to keep innovating, both in search and advertising operations and in new lines such as online office-productivity software."[via business week]

      Linux-guru’s conviction fuels ReiserFS debate

News: When Green Goes Commercial: Bio-Corn Fuels Gulf of Mexico's "Dead Zone"
"Dead zones" are areas in the world's oceans where marine life can not be supported due to depleted oxygen levels. Fish can flee potential suffocation by migrating to other areas, but they are often quickly rendered unconscious and die. Even if they survive studies show a decrease in size of reproductive organs causing low egg counts and lack of spawning. Slow moving bottom-dwelling creatures like clams, lobsters and oysters are unable to escape. All colonial animals are extinguished. (More)In other words: a "dead zone" is a vicious circle turning an ocean into a desert, incapable of supporting any marine life. The most notorious dead zone is a 22,126 square kilometer (8,543 square mile) region in the Gulf of Mexico, the size of the State of New Jersey. Can renewable energy make a dent in fossil fuels?
4.2 billion. That's how many rooftops you'd have to cover with solar panels to displace a cubic mile of oil (CMO), a measure of energy consumption, according to Ripudaman Malhotra, who oversees research on fossil fuels at SRI International. The electricity captured in those hypothetical solar panels in a year (2.1 megawatts each) would roughly equal the energy in a CMO. The world consumes a little over 1 CMO of oil a year right now and about 3 CMOs of energy from all sources. Read the full story from News.com. Hattip to Laura B

Oppss.... we will be out of fossil fuel before we need to implement Carbon Trade scams Quote - "(Hassen) grossly underestimated the scale of the problem." But please give him more funding, media attention and credit for this gross error in data A renowned global-warming scientist says the problem of global warming is much more serious than previously estimated. However, he also hints that there may be no need to fear catastrophic carbon-driven climate upheaval, as mankind will run out fossil fuels much sooner than presently estimated. Fossil Fuels YUCK!
I am not in the mood today to write a serious rant today so here is my silly rant for today:Simple and clear: We need to get off the fossil fuels as much as possible. I am no expert in this area, just a concern citizen that wants a cleaner, better world. I want alternatives to gas. I want affordable green cars and fuels in our world. Some say: "What's the big deal besides the *bleeping* gas prices?" Well think about it this way, if we have alternative fuels then that would be in direct competition with Big Oil Companies... that would bring down the cost of gas. One thing that has been lacking is some kind of direct competition with gas/oil companies. Once alternatives 'catch on' and big oil is finally on it's knees then we can have a better world. You don't have to believe in Global Warming

CORN fuel up to 423 times more carbon emissions than fossil fuels?
Recent reports, though, have led to a growing concern that ethanol might simply be a faster way of digging an environmental grave. According to a piece in Science magazine, experts from Princeton and the Nature Conservancy have focused on serious problems associated with the rising use of ethanol. First and foremost, they said, clearing the vast tracts of land necessary for growing corn can result in anywhere from 17 times to 423 times more carbon emissions annually than are saved by burning biofuels rather than fossil fuels. There are some caveats to these objections: For instance, the exact emissions numbers are by no means agreed upon, and cellulosic ethanol could be made from switchgrass or other plants, which can grow almost anywhere and would not increase the price of

A scientific experiment was conducted to determine the impact of anger on decision-making and rationality. It was concluded that anger actually improves your thought processes and helps you to make better decisions which you more strongly uphold. So, take that all of you nay-sayers who constantly criticize us for tossing away the facade of propriety and demeanor of respect for others' beliefs. We're actually better off precisely because we get angry. Quote: read more

Complacency Fuels Rising HIV Rate in Men Who Have Sex With Men
The ’80s slogan “SILENCE=DEATH” is regaining relevance as HIV/AIDS rates rise among a new generation of men who have sex with men. The warning comes from three of the researchers who led the CDC’s HIV/AIDS efforts in the first two decades of the AIDS epidemic. Lead study author Harold W. Jaffe, MD, was director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention and now heads the department of public health at England’s Oxford University. “‘Silence equals death’ may unfortunately be regaining relevance for some men who have sex with men,” Jaffe and colleagues write in the Nov. 28 issue of TheJournal of the American Medical Association. That’s not to say HIV infection is still the death sentence it was in the mid-1980s. It isn’t. And that may be part of the problem. HIV drugs can postpone AIDS for decades. This means the current generation has not had the personal experience of their older gay brethren, who

Fuel-cell technology has alternately been a darling of Wall Street and Detroit for almost a decade now, but we've yet to see many hydrogen-powered vehicles in the wild. The technology seems like an environmentalist's wet dream (literally), with hydrogen bonding with oxygen to produce power and water — and no greenhouse-gas emissions to speak of. But building a new series of hydrogen power stations hasn't been as easy as once thought, and people still think "Hindenberg" when they think "hydrogen," although it seems to be a safe enough technology that transit au

What Are The Alternatives To Fossil Fuels?
There are three fossil fuels in the world, however none of the three are great for the environment and the work is on to find alternatives to fossil fuels.Coal, oil, and natural gas are the three fossil fuels available. Besides not being great for the environment, there is also not an endless supply and eventually one or more of these resources will disappear. So scientists and others are looking to find ways that are more efficient, less harmful to the environment, and that have the ability to replace our existing fuels over time. There is enough coal left on the planet to last another 200 years or so. That sounds like a long time but really it's not. On top of that coal is not a clean fuel form. Coal is made of carbon and in order to create energy from it, coal must be burned which creates carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is partially responsible for global warming because it traps the earth heat. The good news is that more effective methods of burning coal have been discovered thanks

Study Fuels Debate Over Whether Exercise And Body Size Influence Ovarian Cancer Risk
The study, presented by Australian researchers today (Thursday) at the European Cancer Conference (ECCO 14) in Barcelona, found some evidence suggesting exercise might increase the risk. It found no link with body measurements. The study included 24,479 Australian women aged between 27 and 75, followed for an average of 13 years. Body measurements such as waist circumference, weight, fat mass and non-fat mass were taken and the women were questioned about the frequency and intensity of their physical activity outside of work. Those answers were combined into a formula to score physical activity levels. During the study, 90 of the women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Thirteen of those women did no exercise, 21 reported low levels of physical activity, 37 reported medium levels and 19 were classified as engaging in high levels of physical activity. “After adjusting for other risk factors for ovarian cancer, we found that women with high levels of physical activity were the mos

      Fossil Fuels are Dangerous
I thought of writing this piece a number of times, but always decided against it. It always did, and still does, seem like an interesting idea that would never get much traction. But, I rather like sharing outlandish ideas (see last Thursday), so I’ve decided to give this one a go. I think the claim can be made that fossil fuels are killing people. And no, this isn’t about global warming. This is about the lives of coal miners. This summer, few Americans missed the nine deaths that came at a Utah coal mine. The first collapse trapped and killed six Utah coal miners. The second collapse killed three more in a fatal rescue attempt. And even if those nine are the only casualties of American coal mines this year, that’s a pretty dangerous line of work. Certainly more dangerous than most of the things better-paid Americans do daily. We should also notice that America’s coal mines, which sadly seem to always claim at least a few workers a year, are a great deal safer

Discover 10 Ways Passion Fuels the Law of Attraction

This is the foundation of the Law of Attraction. Is it true? 10 reasons why people living with passion are able to accelerate the Law of Attraction in their lives are: 1) Passion Flames Focused Action. Action takers create results but not all results are positive ones. But doing anything is better than doing nothing at all because all actions bridges the gulf between the spiritual and the physical realms. Focused actions means focused energy and activity, resulting in turgocharged results. 2) Passion Fuels Our Desired Outcomes When we are not passionate, we do things half heartedly and achieve run of the mill results. Bio fuels could they be a mistake?
It seems that the initial love affair with bio fuels could be coming to an end, with many fields being converting fields the growing of bio crops instead of food crops, and worse of all, forests being cut down in order to create even more field space to grow bio fuels. Cutting down forests to grow bio crops, surely that is not right? The problem is, the bio fuels still create emissions, but the growing of the crops creates more emissions, but these are in other countries rather than being in the US so the carbon footprint is less for the States, while they increase in the other country, which is normally a developing nation. The problem could get so bad that the emission could be as high as two to nine times as much as they are now. That mid-1970’s price explosion led President Nixon to ask his old pal, Arthur Burns, then Chairman of the Fed, to find a way to alter the CPI inflation data to take attention away from the rising prices. Texas Considers Alternative Fuels In The Face of Oil Prices - A Run-Down of Choices
The dramatic rise in oil prices over the past few years has generated a lot of attention for alternative fuels and alternatively powered vehicles. Environmentalists hail it as the beginning of a revolution and a natural consequence of using non-renewable resources with abandon. The public health benefits that would result from a major increase in those using alternative fuels is almost immeasurable. Even Texas, second only to Alaska in the amount of oil produced per year, has biodiesel stations in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and many other parts of the state. All the major car manufacturers are coming out with hybrid models, and prototypes are in the works for an American release of a mass-produced, plug-in electric hybrid vehicle as early as 2009. These models promise up to 150 miles per gallon, and that’s just the beginning of what this technology can do. Blox Designs Fuels My Love for Chunky Jewelry
Who would have thought that I would love chunky, heavy jewelry so much? In all other aspects of fashion, I seek out far slimmer pieces. I hate big, clunky shoes, and I avoid clothing that isn’t sleek and svelte. The big pieces of jewelry bring a nice counter-balance. Blox Designs is a perfect example of chunky jewelry. The designers, Magdalena Kubik and Lori Reynolds, both come from interior design backgrounds; subsequently their designs incorporate tiles made of glass and metal. The focus is on clean, modern lines. Many of their pieces remind me of throw pillows, accent shelves, decorative mirrors, and other home accents. The large black pendant is one of my favorites, but I still have not figured out what to wear it with. The large size requires either a very open neck, or a very high neck. Because of the precise 90 degree angles, I find it looks a bit out-of-place against a scoop neck. The metal-backed tile makes it glitter; the silver circles soften the hard angles

I just saw a re-run of MTV’s Pimp My Ride. Let me tell you, I’m pretty impressed. I used to love this show, but then I got a little tired of these guys seeing how many monitors they could fit in a car. This episode, however, was a bit different. Instead of just dubs and 20 million video monitors, there was dubs, 20 million video monitors, and an 800 horsepower engine with 1400 lb-ft of torque that gets 25 MPG in a 1965 Impala SS. This engine pushed the heavy Impala to a 0-60 time of around 3.5 seconds. That’s gol-darned fast, son. The kicker? All this was done using zero fossil fuels. These amazing numbers were reached by using a turbocharged Chevy Duramax diesel engine with a few standard diesel go-fast goodies backed by an Allison tranny and a Currie rear end. All this was done specifically for the Impala to use 100% biodiesel (B100) as it’s fuel. All of this was done by MTV as part of their Break the Addiction campaign for Earth Day. In addition to Xzibit, M

Formula One to use Bio Fuels in 2011
The Formula One bosses have decided that by the beginning of the 2011 season, all of the cars competing in the world championship will be powered by a 2.2 liter V6 turbo charged engine that will run on bio fuel. Bio fuels are already being used in motor sport, by Audi and Peugeot in their LeMans series cars, and have done very well on it, but Formula One cars running diesel engines, it just doesn’t sound right, after all would this mean the introduction of diesel powered high performance cars such as Porsche, Ferrari and Aston Martin? If they manage to pull this off, then this will certainly add some serious creditability for the future use of Bio Fuels as a long term viable replacement for gasoline in all types of vehicle. University begin to make bio fuels
The University of Wales in Newport, have begun a program that will both save them money and hopefully reduce their carbon footprint too. The scheme has come about because they have a large amount of waste cooking oil from the university kitchens, to just simply pour it away would be a waste and not very good for the environment, so they have come up with a great idea that will use up the waste cooking oil, save money on diesel fuels for their machinery, such as tractors and even generators, and finally reduce their carbon footprint at the same time. They have been doing this for nearly two months and by all accounts the process appears to be working as they are able to produce a liter of bio fuel for just 16p (32 cents) while a liter of fuel from their supplier would cost anything up to 38p (76 cents) liter. Thus saving money and reducing their carbon foot print by up to 20 tons a year. Source [Gair Hydd News] bio fuel, carbon footprint, cooking oil, diesel fuels, Eco Friendly, gener

USA: Clean fuels energy, ¿Greener Days Ahead?
by Brian Wingfield At first glance, the pro-environmental rulings handed down by the Supreme Court this week seem to bode unfavorably for utility companies as owners of power plants that produce harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. But in fact, the twin decisions could actually give a boost to energy companies that are already betting their future on investment in alternative fuel

      Whisky Fuels Scottish Economy
The 2006 Global Connection Survey prepared for the Scottish Executive shows just how big a hangover the economy of the country would have if Scotch whisky were not so popular around the world. According to the report, food and beverages are the most important trade goods for Scotland, accounting for $7.06 billion or 19.4 percent of the total exports in 2005. Oil and gas are excluded from the survey. Of the $7.06 billion in food and beverage totals, spirits account for $5.9 billion -- the vast majority being blended and Single Malt Scotch. Overall exports climbed by $1.77 billion last year and the United States remains the leading buyer of Scottish goods. The next largest export sector for Scotland is chemicals, which had $3.5 billion in export sales during the year.

Brownfields growing green fuels in Michigan update
We wrote in the beginning of September about a professor at Michigan State University, Kurt Thelen, who was working on a project that grows crops on old industrial waste sites (known as brownfields) and then using those crops to make biofuels. The benefits including the plants sucking up some of the toxins in the soil, using "waste" land and creating more biomass for fuel. In an update from DaimlerChrysler, one of Thelen's partner on the site, the crops - sunflowers, corn, soybeans and more - have been harvested and will soon be tested as biomass for biofuels. Thelen's project, located in Rose Township, was endorsed by the EPA and could (fingers crossed here) lead to growing biofuels crops on hundreds of brownfields across the country. Via Autobloggreen

"Hagel Co-Sponsors Bill to Increase Consumer Availability of Alternative Fuels"
Chuck Hagel's Senate Office put out the following press release yesterday, once again showing his concern for energy indepdence and for alternative fuels.Hagel Co-Sponsors Bill to Increase Consumer Availability of Alternative Fuels January 18th, 2007 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) joined a bi-partisan group of Senators today in re-introducing legislation that would authorize the Secretary of Energy to use Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) penalties to provide grants to eligible entities who install alternative fuel pumps for fuel types such as E-85 ethanol and natural gas. U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) was an original co-sponsor of this bill in the 109th Congress. U.S. automakers are producing an increasing number of vehicles that run on alternative fuels, such as E-85 ethanol blend gasoline, but only one percent of all gas stations in the U.S. provide consumers with E-85 fuel. This legislation will provide grant funding for the construction or expans

      Sperm Fuels Cervical Cancer
Is anyone surprised that a new survey has found that sperm may fuel cervical cancer?   The hormone Prostragladin is used by the womb to regulate cell growth and and controls the shedding or thickening of the womb lining during the menstrual cycle. The levels of prostragladin are a 1000 times higher in spem than in the female body.   But this is hardly shocking news.   Practically every advice site on teenage sex, includes this statistic: "The number one risk factor for cervical cancer is early sexual activity, the second is multiple sex partners. Source: CT, Hatcher et al, 1994, pp. 515"   It tends to be overlooked amid all the other potential health issues surrounding sex, and the moral arguments surrounding teenage sex. In essence it gives the lie to the saying, 'if they are old enough to bleed, they are old enough to breed.'.   Despite sexual activity being the way in which animals replicate, the enviroment of the vagina is not exactly hospitable to the sperm. And for good re

Car Theft Fuels Gang Violence and International Terrorism… Still
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Sergio Giron is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, a member of the Mara Salvatrucha street gang (a.k.a. MS-13) and a convicted felon. Having served a 346-day sentence for assault with a deadly weapon after shooting a gang defector (charges since dropped), Giron awaits deportation hearings. To pay for an immigration lawyer, Giron’s fellow gang members began stealing cars and chopping them for parts. The admission illustrates the direct link between car theft and organized crime and, as this report from The Boston Globe points out, international terrorism. It's high time the states stepped-up their cooperation with federal authorities in this area.

Production of Liquid Alkane Fuels from Biomass-based Glycerol
Researchers from University of Wisconsin, Madison, US, James Dumesic and co-workers devised a system that produces liquid alkanes from a by-product of biomass processing, with less carbon dioxide produced. The system involves production of synthesis gas (mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) from glycerol and production of hydrocarbon from synthesis gas (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis). Both processes-catalytic reaction-can [...]

      Bio-Fuels Boondoggle Backfires, Badly
A new study that concludes that rainforests absorb more CO2 than can be saved by clearing the land for biofuel crops. Razing rainforests for bio-fuels? Surely not! Uh-huh. U.S. and European government legislation mandating huge increases in ethanol consumption is already amping-up ethanol production in developing countries. Wired Science reports "In Indonesia, for example, environmentalists estimate that foreign biofuel demand will drive energy companies to clear the country's remaining peat rainforests, a valuable CO2 sink. The resulting slash-and-burn could release 50 billion tons of CO2 -- nearly a decade's worth of US greenhouse emissions -- into the atmosphere." Renton Rightelato, co-author of the aforementioned study, said the West's focus on biofuels distracts its citizenry from the real problem. "People feel they're saving the planet [by encouraging bio-fuels]. They're not. Biofuels are essentially being used as a way of avoiding the real problem
