The road less traveled? (Somehow I really don’t think that this is what Frost had in mind.)
What was supposed to be a quickish trip to drop off my nephew and see some bloggity friends became a trip fraught with difficulty and awfulness due to a broken down car. I had to drive 30 miles an hour on the freeway and even though I had my hazard lights on I was screamed [...]

A frost free fridge freezer incorporates technology to keep the unit from icing up. The main advantages are that the food packaging doesn't freeze up, and the shelves remain frost free. Also there are less smells emitting from frost free fridge freezers due to the constant air circulation. Without a frost free model you will find that every 12 months or so that the frozen food needs consuming

Garden Techniques - How To Deal With Frost Damaged Plants
Spring is a time when you can often get caught out by an unexpected frost. We have had a couple of vicious frosts after relatively balmy days, and this can be lethal for plants that get caught and are unprotected too. How do you recognise the signs, and what can you do? If wilting leaves appear with no good explanation or they have a water logged look, this can be a sign that your plant is suffering from frost damage and needs some help. Another symptom of frost damage can be the sudden appearance of brown areas on the leaves. You should also watch out for evidence that the new shoots on your plants are starting to die back. If the plants are spring flowering and their flowers don't open completely or they become discolored and start to die off, then you can be fairly sure that frost damag

Average last frost dates are only right 50% of the time
Our last frost date in my area should have been March 24th but given the frosty mornings this past week and the fact we had snow coming down most of today it looks like this year our last frost date will fall on the other side of the bell curve. Unfortunately, I was optimistic with some of the great weather we were having earlier and planted my tomoato seeds for a much earlier move outside. The poor tomatoes are still growing in my PC grow box but starting to not look so good. As you can see from the picture below my tomato plants are in some dire need of some non-artificial light. I am afraid I might end up buying my tomato plants at my local nursery (yet again) this year. Vegetable gardening is definitely one of those hobbies which it does not pay to be a too optimistic.

      Jack Frost, bugger off.
Our long hot days are numbered so we have to make the most of what we have left. It's a depressing thought. While I've moaned about intense heat and Conor's irritating 'avicadas' that loiter in the trees, I'm just not ready for winter. When the cicadas quieten down and stop dive bombing our deck, I'll know Autumn's in full swing. Isla was born on the 15th April last year and I remember wearing a sleeveless tunic the next day leaving hospital. Within the week I was in long tops and we had our fireplace stoked up. Grrrrrrrr (or should that be brrrrrrr) to winter. Chills, frost, damp, colds, frumpy clothes and expensive avocados. I'm not happy.

Alistair Butt © 2008.A clear sky, low sun and a heavy frost covering the long grass, turned what on other day could just be another ordinary view into something quite wonderful. What captured my attention first was the line of haphazard fence posts and their cast shadows radiating across the sloping field, followed by the main tree and finally the distant hazy tree line as a background. There was just enough autumnal colour/color left on some trees/bushes to add some warmth More warm colour/color was available in areas of the foreground, the result of the sunlight shining through the clumps of tall grass. Along with the frost, these provide the 'warm' sections and so produced the counteraction between the warm

Frost: It's the road NOT taken
Do they still make students memorize Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken?" If not, at least the poem is still included in most antholgies. Courses in American literature usually deem Frost a very rural, pro-American, voice of democracy, voice of the people kind of poet. He is that. But there is much more. More brillance. His deliberate ambiguity is easily overlooked, and yet therein lies the heart of his work.  Without it "The Road Not Taken" is another good poem with a common theme:  There was this dilemma. I had a difficult choice to make.  I made it.  The poem shares this theme with "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." While looking very rural, the roar of the traffic on the M1 motorway, which passes just behind the middle distant hill, is a constant distraction. It was late afternoon, a lovely winter sunlight and some distant cloud along with the remaining frost clinging on in the shadows cast by the hedge. Jack Frost Papercraft
During my lunch break I was trying to catch up with my daily gaming news when I noticed this blog post. It's a Christmas card from video game developer/publisher Atlus U.S.A (株式会社アトラス) sent to Kotaku editor Mike Fahey, it shows Jack Frost right smack in the middle surrounded by Atlus employees sporting Jack's familiar blue headgear/joker hat. This reminded me that there's a Jack Frost papercraft model from way back (5 yrs ago) that's still available for free download at the Atlus Japan web site. Some facts about Jack - he's considered a snowman, so for those of you that have been requesting for a snowman papercraft, this is probably the closest I could find for this year. Jack's favorite catchphrase is "Hee-Ho", he became quite popular when he appeared on the RPG video game series Shin Megami Tensei (真・女神転生|). The beauty of this poem lies in its simplicity. Frost wrote this poem in June 1922. He was inspired by the sight of a sunrise to write this poem, after spending the whole night writing a long poem. This is also one of Frost’s favourite among his own poems. In a letter to Lord Louis Untermeyer he called it "my best b

Road Not Taken By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fairAnd having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that, the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden blackOh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:two roads diverged in a wood, and I --I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.

Jack Frost folding all my clothes...
There are some things I just don't have the time to waste my energy or resources on. Like laundry. Just kidding...laundry is a necessity. Unless you're a nudist...which I'm not - and since Jack Frost has officially moved into the Northeast corner of Texas, I'm more of what you'd call a "bundler-upper".I remember when I was a kid growing up in Alaska, every time I'd leave the house for school, my mother would call out from under her down comforter lap throw (while seated in her leather recliner), "Bundle up honey, it's cold outside!" Which would have been all fine and dandy. But it was the middle of the summer. The winters were another story, however. I DID develop the habit of "layering" my clothing. Luckily, it was the 1980's and layering was in high style. Leg warmers over skin tight leggings under an oversized sweatshirt that was over a tank top (a la "Flashdance"). I was HOT...but in a cool sort of way. I still have a tendency to want to dress in layers (sans the leg warmer

"Together", near Wessington, Derbyshire 12"x16".Oil on board. Alistair Butt © 2007.I had plans for this particular morning to explore the short lane that runs off to the right hand side of this painting but the two horses in the field, standing next to some bails of hay, caught my eye. I have seen them before and usually they (normally three horses) come running up to the gate as soon as anyone approaches. Thankfully, that day they didn't and they stayed still for about 15 minutes, long enough to get all the information needed. When returning later that morning, the horses had moved to the far end of the field.

      Frost Bite and Treatment
Its wise to know what to do in case of long periods of exposure to the elements as the season gets colder. Especially for people like me that live in the mountains far from everyone. Its not uncommon here to not see a car for several hours on some roads so if you broke down on one of those roads you might find yourself at risk for exposure. The general manifestations of prolonged exposure to extreme cold include shivering, numbness, low body temperature, drowsiness and marked muscular weakness. As time passes there is mental confusion and impairment of judgment. The victim staggers, his eyesight fails, he falls and he may become unconscious. Shock is evident and the victim’s heart may develop fibrillation. Death, if it occurs, is usually due to heart failure. Frostbite results when crystals form, either superficially or deeply in the fluids and the underlying soft tissues of the skin. The effects are more severe if the injured area is thawed and then refrozen. Frostbite is

      the morning frost
Say good night to the winter sun. Even as he clutches your heart with color, in a tantrum against getting his rest.Instead, sneak out at his awakening. The gentle moon persuades the fair frost to paint the buildings, trees, and grass with a glistening sheen. It covers everything with a delicate sugary coating. It makes the world a twinkling, magical place. The generous moon bids this fairyland for the security of her lover's bruised ego. For the aging winter sun is frail compared to his younger July self. His weakened warmth fights against the blustery clouds. It is best to spot his radiance when he first awakens and has not yet hid in shame into the sky.She knows that he still has the strength to soften and heat the roof tops. Notice, how she discreetly lingers to be sure he has risen. She hopes he will rise to his old job and not spend the day in depressed slumber. She smiles when he brilliantly soothes the frozen fingers of the trees.See how she steals away silently without recognit

Shiraz, Frost Bite, and Third nipples
I had lots of things I hoped to accomplish today.  Instead,  I spent the beginning of the day nursing the Shiraz hangover from hell.  It wasn’t a hangover as much as it was the result of my friend Allison and I convincing ourselves it would be wise to to sit outside in 20 degree weather and drink wine for hours. (Hey! We had a fire pit and a roaring fire to keep us warm..) Oddly enough, this sitting outside in bizarre temperatures became an even better idea as the glasses were emptied and refilled.  My husband, of course, decided to be a wise ass and holler as we walked out the door, “see you guys in five minutes. it’s too cold out there. blah blah blah.” At that point, we had to stay outside.  At least for a time longer than five minutes, because who was he to tell us how to tolerate the FREEZING air?  Psshh. I was going to be tough. Of course, this morning when I was trying to tuck my cold feet between his in  bed, rubbing my cold nose against his ba

Oil Painting - Painting winter trees, mist, frost, stream in landscape - Amber Valley, Derbyshire
"Rising Mist", Amber Valley, Derbyshire 12"x16".Oil on canvas. Alistair Butt © 2007.A short walk on a very cold frosty day allowed me to come across this view of the river as it winds it way down the Amber Valley in Derbyshire. A wonderful combination of the low winter sun and mist transformed this view in something a little bit different. What really attracted me was the way the light passes through the mist as it enveloped the trees along the river banks and then ended in a pool of sunlight on the water surface. Not the quickest of oil paintings to produce, not in painting time, but just waiting for sections to be dry enough to then over paint. After an quick under painting to establish the main areas, the background for this painting, in this case the far bank of trees on the right, were painted first before progressing left to complete the bank of trees above the skyline. The sky from white to pale yellow, which doesn't show to well on the above picture, was then painted around all

Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted With the Night’
Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted With the Night’ is a poem that moves about in a twilight world as far as choices available in life are concerned or when it concerns taking a firm stand on an issue. It is a poem about the darker side of things and portrays the poet’s isolation. The poet in this poem describes the comings and goings of a person walking about on the city roads. The poet has even braved the rain and wandered around on the city roads. He even walked upto the outskirts of the city. The poet even refers to the ‘saddest city lane’. He has seen the watchman while on his beat in these lanes. The poet saw some immoral activities being performed but he does not specifically mention them. Instead his eyes were dropped down with shame. The poet then stands still and the sounds of a cry fall upon his ears. The cry comes from a distant place and is also not continuous. The interrupted nature of the cry symbolizes suppression. The cries were neither to welcome nor to bid farewell

Breakfast Links: US Gov’t Blog, Frost Giants & Lobsters
Well you’ve been clamoring for it and now you got it - GovGab, Your U.S. government blog. Catchy! It’s a wierd blog with a mish mash of random things - feels more like a personal blog than, you know, a government blog, whatever that is. But you can tell it’s a gov’t blog because it has 6 bloggers, one assigned to each weekday (none of the weekends) and a substitute. Anyhew, if you want to see your tax dollars blogging, this is the place to go. (via mefi) Alternately if you want something good to read, you can check out the beginning of the third chapter of Odd and the Frost Giants by none other than Neil Gaiman. It’s his new book, sadly only visible on amazon.uk. Odd had imagined that the side of salmon would feed him for a week or more. But bears and foxes and eagles all, he discovered, eat salmon, and feeding them was the least he could do to thank them for seeing him home. They ate until the fish was all gone, but only Odd and the eagle seemed satisfie

Up with Jack Frost... Amber Valley, Derbyshire
A series of days with clear overnight skies has resulted in some wonderful early mornings with ground frost, either with clear or misty areas. This has meant some early starts and busy mornings. This time of year is superb for finding landscape painting subjects with the low autumn sun, the frosts (if available), trees either bare, or with green, brown or autumn coloured/colored leaves, mists/fogs etc.For many reasons this is where some previous knowledge of a location pays dividends, where the sun position will be, rivers/valleys for the better chance of mists/fogs, potential view points, saving on time... noting things like sun position, return at "X' time of year, time of day etc on a map all helps. The three pictures above give an idea of what was available, all three could be starting points for a painting, the addition of some sheep/figure and dog (picture one and two), possible alteration of foreground on pictures one and three with the stubble areas not being that attractive.Al

      Manic Monday: Frost
This week for manic Monday, FROST is the word. For more Morgen and MM's please go to to his blog- It's A Blog Eat Blog World.I'm a little late posting my MM, mostly because of the back ache I've had since last Friday but also because MM writer's block. I hope this is not a portent of things to come... because NaNoWriMo is going to suck big time *snort*.Anywho, the first thing that came to mind when I thought of the word frost was a time about 5 years ago, when Anna, John and I attended a family member's 8th birthday party. Anna was about 1 1/2 years old and sitting on my lap, and I shared small spoonfuls of ice cream and cake with her. After we were done having dessert, we all sat around the table and enjoyed stories of every day life sprinkled with family stories and teasing. Anna had decided that I wasn't done with dessert. As she sat on my lap, she scooped up the frosting that remained on my plate (because I was trying to spare my waistline some extra calories) and proceeded
