Korean actress Kim Yun-jin, star of the U.S. television series "Lost", has graced the front page of USA Today. Friday's issue of the nationwide daily featured a photo of Kim on page one alongside a special report on the upcoming fourth season of the hit show. In the ABC adventure-drama, Kim plays Sun, the pregnant wife of Jin played by Korean-American Daniel Dae Kim. The new season kicks off on Jan. 31. While 16 episodes were planned for the season, that number was halved due to a Hollywood writers' strike. The eight episodes were shot before the strike began. "The shorter season is disappointing, but the eight episodes are really great," Kim told the newspaper. Not long ago, I reported on how supporters independent of Paul’s campaign raised $4 million online and an additional $200,000 over the phone in a single day, a record among this year’s Republican candidates. That support has had even more results than the money alone, since Paul says it has caused an additional “$10 million worth of free publicity.”

In the last few days some shifting has been occurring with the display of this website's content. Some of the blog posts are being promoted to the front page. These posts are those that cover a significant resource rather than a personal experience or anecdote.
Once a "proper" front page article has been published about the resource, the blog post that mentioned it will be demoted and appear only in the blog.
This is being done for several reasons:
1) To promote the good resources as soon and effectively as possible.
2) To allow front page articles that are not fully-integrated into the category structure.
3) To facilitate the growth of the site by publishing as many useful, quality resources as possible to the front page.
The reasons for these reasons can be demonstrated with one simple example: Latin has not yet been added to the list of languages on the site, but a blog post about a podcast for learning Latin should be front page material right away since it is so useful. Once Lati

Some people may believe my occasional forays into the topic of news and media is diverging from our mandate of brave new travel. But when you think about it, the issues actually quite related.
Our view of the world and other cultures is largely coloured by the lens of big newspapers and television. In the past, diversity of opinion is what kept the multitude of lenses from swinging too far from reality. You could pick a few sources, and find your own truth in the middle.
These days the tentacles of big media have largely enveloped these once independent sources. And they’ve been spewing toxic sludge instead of thoughtful reporting ever since.
Case in point: the two largest newspapers in Vancouver this week carried front page stories about Paris Hilton’s jail sentence (and I’m sure the coverage was even more thorough in the US).
How to combat this noxious pollution? Support alternative news sources. Stop reading big media. And turn off your TV.

A couple of nasties for Gordon have hit the front pages this week. The Times and the Telegraph brought us these headlines:
First of all, the Daily Telegraph gave us the frontpage seen on the right here, with the headline Brown losing his touch on the economy, say voters. The Telegraph/YouGov poll is the second bad result in two days for Gordon, following on from the Guardian/ICM poll the day before that said he is currently completely failing to convince the country that he would make a better prime minister than David Cameron.
