By Bridget Johnson For the past few months, the news from the campaign trail has been focused on the photo finish in the Democratic Party. But now that it's just down to Barack Obama and John McCain, will the media coverage even out as it should? Don't count on it. Obama's every move still grabs enthusiastic top billing. When McCain does make the headlines, it's usually hinged to Obama's latest m

This piece from Salon has been in my “must get to” pile for a several weeks, though it dates from March ‘07. It has been gnawing on my brain.
I have talked to more than 20 female veterans of the Iraq war in the past few months, interviewing them for up to 10 hours each for a book I am writing on the topic, and every one of them said the danger of rape by other soldiers is so widely recognized in Iraq that their officers routinely told them not to go to the latrines or showers without another woman for protection.

Spc. Mickiela Montoya, 21, who was in Iraq with the National Guard in 2005, took to carrying a knife with her at all times. “The knife wasn’t for the Iraqis,” she told me. “It was for the guys on my own side.”
….
Yet, despite the equal risks women are taking, they are still being treated as inferior soldiers and sex toys by many of their male colleagues. As Pickett told me, “It’s like sending three wo
KSN&C taken to the woodshed over Draud pieceI spent a good deal of last week researching the public utterances of Jon Draud, one of the finalists presently under consideration for Kentucky's next Education Commissioner. In the process I reviewed 993 articles since 1990 either about Jon Draud, written by Draud or where he was quoted. I wrote a cover piece that was favorable to his candidacy. This stood in contrast to my previous assertion that the board should have (and still should) renew their search on a nation-wide basis this spring.Based on the record, and my own biases, I think Draud should remain in the hunt, while the search goes on. Draud disagrees. He thinks the board should select from among the current finalists. After my cover piece, I presented a bullet list of Draud-related items along with selected articles and excerpts, which stood by themselves.During all that review, only one time did my spidey senses go off. It was this quote that did it:"Furthermore, we have ta
3 of the United Kingdom, part of NATO's mission in Afghanistan, ISAF, were killed in what is thought to have been a "friendly fire" incident, according to the UK Ministry of Defence. Two other soldiers were injured in the incident on Friday, when the soldiers were bombed by US F-15 jets which had been called to provide support after the patrol came under attack.friendly fire incident took place Thursday evening northwest of Kajaki in Helmand province when the British troops were attacked by Taliban insurgents. The ministry said that "during the intense engagement that ensued, close air support was called in from two US F-15 aircraft to repel the enemy. One bomb was dropped and it is believed the explosion killed the three soldiers."The military said next of kin had been informed and said the incident would be investigated.
So he first pre-season defeat, eh? 0 - 1 to Salzburg. Hmmmm. Third game, first goal conceded to a team that are six weeks ahead in terms of fitness. Worried? Not in the slightest. A tour of Austria is not going to make or break a season; given that many will not have played a full game yet, there is no point in getting bent out of shape about the performance. Sorry, guys, but I don’t care if the third pre-season game ends in a defeat; I have not one jot of interest in knowing we could have hit six. Too much importance is being attached to matches involving players who are still ring-rusty from a Summer on the beach and on the Sangria. Despite attempts to make it otherwise, I am not bothered by Gallas being captain instead of Toure, Lehmann, Uncle Tom Cobley and All. Pre-season games are about regaining fitness and touch. There are four more to go, the first XI will play together in those but let’s keep a sense of perspective over this; if Fulham beat us in three or four we
RAFAEL Nadal has pulled no punches, crushing close friend and former winner, Carlos Moya, to move closer to a third successive French Open title.
The 21-year-old cruised to a 6-4 6-3 6-0 victory in 2hr 02min against the 1998 champion, to set up a meeting with Serbia’s in-form Novak Djokovic, who earlier reached his first Grand Slam semi-final by dismissing Russia’s Igor Andreev 6-3 6-3 6-3.
Moya, who like Nadal, hails from the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, could find no way past more…
This is a very sad conclusion.
ALBANY, N.Y. — Friendly fire killed a New York state trooper as he searched a farmhouse for a suspect in the shooting of a colleague, officials said Friday.
Trooper David C. Brinkerhoff, a member of the force’s elite mobile response team, was shot Wednesday as he and another trooper went into a farmhouse where the suspect had holed up.
“The fatal wound was made by a .223 tactical round that was believed to have been fired by an MRT member,” said acting State Police Superintendent Preston Felton.

The 190th Fighter Squadron, Blues and Royals friendly fire incident was a "friendly fire" incident involving two United States Air Force Air National Guard 190th Fighter Squadron attack aircraft and vehicles from the United Kingdom's D Squadron, The Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry and took place on March 28, 2003 during the invasion of Iraq by armed forces of the United States and United Kingdom. The operation was known as Operation Telic in the UK and Operation Iraqi Freedom in the US. Whilst not the only fratricide incident during Operation Telic the circumstances around the inquest into the death of one of the British soldiers, Lance-Corporal of Horse Matty Hull led to some media controversy related to the release of video evidence from the attacking aircraft and perceived levels of cooperation into the British inquest into the incident by government agencies of both the United States and United Kingdom. A British coroner ruled that the friendly fire attack from US pilots that killed a British soldier during the war in Iraq was criminal and unlawful. Andrew Walker, Oxfordshire Assistant Deputy Coroner, said that the death of Lance Cpl. Matty Hull from the friendly fire attacks was absolutely avoidable.
Even though the coroner’s verdict is not enforced on the US, and is therefore not subject to the British law, Hull’s widow was appreciative of the verdict. She said, “All my family feel it is the right verdict, it is what we have waited four years to hear.”
According to the coroner there were a lot of errors that resulted in friendly fire attacks, which also left four other British troops injured. He said, “Things were not checked, the coordinates were not checked, identification of the British armored convoy was not checked, and if this had been checked in such a way as the rules of engagement state that they should be, then this could have been enti
Source: The Sun OnlinePublished: February 06, 2007THE Sun today publishes the full, disturbing truth about how the US pilot of an A-10 tankbuster jet broke all the rules to shoot up a British convoy in the Iraq war.We obtained the cockpit videotape at the centre of a diplomatic row between the two Allies. It shows how the pilots — reservists who had never been in action before — made SIX crucial errors. They left 25-year-old Lance Corporal of Horse Matty Hull dead and four comrades from the Household Cavalry Regiment seriously injured. On the tape, one pilot — call sign POPOV36 - appears to gloat sickeningly during the attack. He is egged on by the second — call sign POPOV35 — who encourages: "Get him, get him!â€Looking down at the chaos as a soldier drags burning comrades from the vehicles, he adds: "It looks like he is hauling ass.
