Photo by Gaby HerbsteinThe style of dress worn by Frida Kahlo was a highly constructed performance -- a political statement of pride in indigenous Mexican culture, and a camouflage for her physical ailments. The regional costume Frida adopted was of the matriarchal community of Tehuana in southern Mexico, and continues to inspire designers and photographers around the world (as beautifully illustr

Since we're on the subject of late 60's and early 70's fashion, I figured it would be a great time in between India Fashion Week posts, to show a clip from the Gucci 2009 S/S RTW show. If anybody has channeled that boho / hippie spirit, it's Frida Giannini!
August 24 already! My apologies to those of you who regularly visit my little blog. With the clock ticking towards Cabbagetown Art and Crafts Show, I've been spending long hours at the easel. This piece is another in my on-going Frida à la Klimt series. I've had this one started since sometime in the mid winter, but just couldn't seem to figure out the deco design until last week. I splurged on

I was informed today by Jill of "trend de la creme" that a piece of my jewelry is featured here.o My cameo pendant necklace, "Frida Guadalupe Kahlo" got the nod and I think that's pretty cool! Actually, after looking at the feature on fashion in regards to Our Lady of Guadalupe, I kinda like everything I saw. I'm certainly no fashionista, trendinista and wear what I like and what's comfortable (wh
It's late afternoon here in my little studio and I'm already noticing how the days seem to be getting shorter. Summer is so fleeting, especially in a northern climate. We've had a wet summer here, not nearly enough sun, but everything is gloriously green and lush. There's the lightest soft breeze drifting in my window; it's all quite lovely. I've been working on commissions this week. They're not

It's much too late for me to be coming up with anything to write, so I'll just post my latest painting. It's called "A Small Gesture". It's been awhile since I did a folk Frida.
Viva Frida! had its opening last night and appeared to be a hit! The turn out of art enthusiasts was quite apparent. Since my PlusOne and I arrived at Galeria Rustica early to drop off a bunch of stuff, I was able to take some pictures pre-opening. I always say this, but, the pictures aren't the best, they're just okay. I'm thinking it's time for a new camera. Anyway, on to the "show".....oA shot of Galeria Rustica from the first floor and from the second floor/loft space, which I must say was very cool! Kind of a loungey, relax, bar kind of space. It housed the cocktails and refreshments for the opening!o Upon entering the exhibit space, a curio filled with all kinds of Frida art to be had.o The rest of the pictures below really speak for themselves as it's all of the different ways in w
The opening is tomorrow night, Saturday the 12th, at Galeria Rustica! The opening is 6pm - 9pm, the artists' reception, and of course the public is encouraged to attend! From what I hear, all of the art is hung and it looks fabulous! Come tomorrow night I will know for sure - many photo's will be taken.♥ Viva Frida! ♥
My Frida portraits are packed up and ready to be delivered to Galeria Rustica tomorrow."Esto Es Para Mi" & "La Corona De La Esperanza", acrylic on 8"x10" canvas panel, framed behind glassAnd here we have a preview (of sorts!) for the show that opens on Saturday, the 12th. I loooooove these black wooden frames! You can't get the detail, the heaviness, the slight hint of gold or the ornate details on the frames, but, they were just perfect for five of the portraits. It gives them a nice, Latin-y feel!"Remember Me" & "I Hope the Leaving is Joyful and I Hope Never to Return", acrylic on 16"x20" canvas sheet, framed behind glass These two above are both big, 16" x 20" and the frames make them even bigger (probably around 20" x 24" or so). Since these were the biggest ones, I wanted to f
Frida Kahlo painted her own life. This is one of the inputs of her art being so unique and intriging.
Therefore, I am showing a double video in this article on Frida Kahlo, whereby one video complements the other. The first video features Frida in person, portraying her in her relationships, fame [...]
Espectacular.
As a classic auto-biographical artist, Frida painted her reality.
She claimed to be born on 1910 , the year of the outbreak of the Mexican revolution, because she wanted her life to begin together with the modern Mexico. “after her death at the age of forty-seven in 1954, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo became first a legend, then a myth, and now a cult figure.” thus was Frida Kahlo described by her biographer Hayden Herrera in 1992.
Born from European and Mexican parents in 1907, Frida Kahlo’s looks are triking: long dark hair, distinctive bird-wing brows, black eyes. Kahlo was in a bus accident at age of 18 whereby she seriously injured her spine, resulting in lengthy hospital stays, many operations, and, ultimately, her death. during this time, in an attempt to healing, Kahlo began to paint.
Most of Kahlo’s works depict her personal saga: her accident, her marriage with muralist Diego Rivera, feminism, and her political involvement (communist and Mexican rev
Make him blush with this beautiful lingerie set from Agent Provocateur named Frida. Shimmering grey taffeta jacquard with petite polka dots, sexy pink lace valencienne trim, and don’t forget the luxurious panelled waspie with naughty suspender straps, enticing lace or the lightly padded bra for divine shape that is finished off with a bow detail, and as a bonus the jacquard briefs with teasing sheer tulle sides and derriere. What a perfect luxe holiday treat!
It just could be that fall arrived last night. The heat and humidity have been replaced by cloud, a bit of drizzle and cool enough temperatures that I finally closed some windows. And as I made the morning coffee the air was filled with the honking of Canada Geese as they made their way south. Four great V Formations flew over our house...it was so beautiful and so unmistakably Autumn. True to my pattern, I'm behind in posting the new paintings. I've been working on a number of pieces, more angels, horses and another in my Frida à la Klimt series. I call it "A Golden Soul". Like the previous pieces, it's textured acrylic with metallic and gold leaf. The next painting is another in the "Dark Angel" series. This piece is large, 24 x 36 inches, lots of texture and bronze metallic. And the last one for today is a little angel out for a ride under the stars on her great, grand steed. As always you can find just about all my work, old and new on my website.
I saw this 6-Oscar nominated, 2-Oscar-winning movie on DVD several years ago, and now I watched it again on HD cable channel.
The film directed by Julie Taymor shows what kind of people were Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) and Frida, how they came out to be what they are, what kind of people have surrounded them, how two artists lived and worked together and how they took the art world by storm! It very well conveys the atmosphere of the ’20s and ’30s, the wind of change when the world was crazy about revolutions, communism and socialism, which artists all over the world were picking up and lifting above their heads like a banner. It shows how Frida met Diego Rivera, how two artists have connected, how she set herself up for a life of misury with a guy who’s incapable of loyalty by marrying him, how complex this relationship was and how the world around them changed. The movie shows many aspects of Frida’s character and life: sometimes she is fiery and provocati
"En Mi Estudio"(In My Studio)o Acrylic on 11" x 14" x 1.5" gallery wrapped canvas I like the way this Frida painting turned out, nothing like I expected and that's okay. I think what I like most is the way the reds and oranges subtly "jump off" the canvas. I had originally only had the heart and the paint dripping on her white dress in the shades of reds and oranges, but it was out of balance; something was missing. So, the head dress got the red and orange treatment and now I like it - very much! "En Mi Estudio" can be found here for a few more days.o♥ Viva La Frida!♥

"Esta Vida: Como yo lo Adore!"(This Life: How I Love It!)OAcrylic on 20" x 20" x 3/4 round canvas O Since this is the artist Frida Kahlo's Centennial Year, I decided to paint some 'special' paintings in honor of that. Since my smaller canvas supply no longer exists, I decided to use what I have in stock. This is the first painting done on a funky, round canvas that's pretty decent in size. I love the way the colors came out, both vivid and muted. I think Frida jumps out perfectly against the muted background! Normally I have quite a time painting hands, I always have. I decided this one needed a hand, so, I took a deep breath (really!) and gave it a shot. After I was done with the hand, it looked naked, so I added two rings - much better! It's not a perfect hand, but, I'm happy with it. Actually, I'm happy with the entire thing! I've decided to paint 'special' Frida's this year and since the month of July is her birth month, I'm going to sign these paintings (only done in

Time reveals a person's character." ~Chinese ProverbArtist: Wendy Ryan Title: Time and Distance Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Size: Size: 12 X 16 in 40 X 50 cm Date: 2007 I actually finished this one on the weekend, but didn't get to posting it here. This week is a blur! It's a rush to the finish to be ready for my first summer show Art In The Park !!! I'm putting last minute touches on original pieces, printing and framing, and well, trying to keep it together! And in the midst of all this chaos, I just filled my first order for the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center Museum Shop. I am so honoured, humbled, thrilled, delighted!!! Well, I could go on and on, but it's late, I'm tired, but it's all about Frida.
Well, if my blog looks a little different to you today...you're right. I was doing a little routine maintenance and with my usual technical aplomb managed to delete just about everything! Yes, I know, I should have backed everything up...but I hit the "other" button first and poof! So, with frazzled nerves, I'm posting now. I didn't have the heart to try to fix everything...maybe tomorrow. So, on to the art. I spent today finishing up pieces that were "almost there" but not quite. I started the Frida below a few weeks ago, but it still isn't quite finished. I think I still want to add some embellishment to her hair.So for now, it's "Frida Unnamed" And I hope you'll check out my little Nibblefest piece on eBay.

It's been a busy few weeks filling commission orders. I've just finished a large piece for a collector in Philadelphia. It's a piece I've done before but its been reworked in a much larger format just for her. With my first summer show only two weeks away, I'm going to be locked away painting and printing and keeping my fingers crossed for good weather! It's my first time at Art in The Park and I'm getting so excited! I'll be posting sporadically over the next little while...the days might be getting longer...but they're never long enough!

The only Abba person who is missing on this is Agnetha, Benny produced it and Bjorn played on it. Most of the songs are cover versions with the exception of course, of Frida's original Swedish version of "Fernando" which made it's debut here, a little earlier than Abba's hit version. The most interesting track is her Swedish translation of David Bowie's 'Life On Mars'.Frida - Liv Pa Mars

I have two paintings to share today. The first one is another in my on-going series of Frida Kahlo studies. I never saw 'Frida' but I heard it was a great movie. Looking at this bag, I think it's safe to assume that Tory Burch saw the film and was perhaps inspired by Mexican art. But is that really an excuse to design a hideous handbag? Her 'Frida' Canvas Tote is (I'm assuming), meant to have a Mexican feel, but it winds up looking cheap and tacky. It looks like a novelty bag that was purchased at a Mexican street fair - something you might hang on your wall as a souvenir, but certainly not meant to be carried out of the house. And priced at $295, it better come with a Frida Kahlo original. What do you think: haute or not?
