Ohio teacher John Freshwater is claiming his First Amendment rights were violated when a personal Bible was removed from his desk. Before you start applauding Freshwater as a freedom of speech hero, you should also know that he was teaching his own religious beliefs in class and is alleged to have used an electrostatic device to burn crosses into students' arms. So, not only does John Freshwater need to be schooled on the separation of church and state, but he is a masochist as well, who justifies his violence against children by probably claiming it was God's will. This, once again, represents the arrogance of Christians who think their beliefs are the only beliefs in this country. Not once does it ever cross their mind that it may be amoral to impose your beliefs on children, which I perso
Most women love shopping. They buy several clothes, bags, and shoes among others. Jewelries are also an important part of their wardrobe, and they would like to own several pieces as much as their money would allow. Do you know that there is a kind of jewelry that can be found in almost all jewelry boxes owned by women? Yes, they are called pearls. Pearls are made up of nacre, which is manufactured by mollusks, mussels, or oysters as their defense mechanism. When a foreign body enters their shell, they immediately coat it with this iridescent material to protect their sensitive flesh. These pearls are used today as timeless jewelry pieces that complement a woman's dress. There are two kinds of pearls as follows: 1. Freshwater pearls - grown and harvested in lakes, ponds, or rivers. 2. Seaw

A dramatic way to wear pearls, this stretch bracelet pairs classic white semi-round freshwater pearls with rich purple amethyst chips. The combination of textures and colors is bold and striking. The bracelet measures about an inch wide and stretches to slip over the wrist for an easy fit.
These earrings are quite beautiful, but they are also very tiny. The picture makes them seem like they'd be 3-4 inches long, and they're described as "chandelier" style, which also gives the impression of a larger earring. In reality, they are an inch and a half long at best.
Set off a classy outfit with this elegant chandelier necklace, made from sterling silver and luminous freshwater cultured pearls. Setting up your first fish tank can be exciting but there are a lot of choices to make not the least of which is choosing freshwater tropical fish that will get along and thrive in your tank. A novice aquarist needs fish that are rather hardy and easy to take care of. Luckily, there are plenty of beautiful and exciting tropical fish that fit the bill. the first time aquarium owner might be wise to start with guppies. Sometimes you can find them as juveniles and buy them pretty inexpensively but the juveniles are rather boring to look at it you might want to go with a mature fish which will probably only cost a couple bucks anyway. Guppies are great starter fish since they are quite social and will get along with most of the other fish to want to put your tank. They are one of the easiest f
When one is considering setting up an aquarium, the question comes to mind whether you should set up a freshwater or saltwater fish tank. while a saltwater aquarium will allow you to have it interesting variety of colorful fish, the novice aquarist might consider getting his feet wet with the freshwater fish tank as this will allow you to gain experience before you delve into the very expensive world of saltwater fish. A freshwater fish tank has an easier setup in the saltwater tank and requires less in maintenance. it also is much less expensive in both fish and equipment. A saltwater aquarium requires Marine fish which, although much more colorful than the freshwater fish, are very expensive. In a saltwater aquarium, you'd most likely have live rock which can be very expensive but is a g
As you well know, fishing is all about knowing your fishing grounds. Well, you also need to know the fish. Here is a brief summary of common freshwater fish you could go after. Fishing for Freshwater Fish When discussing "common" freshwater fish that you might try to catch, one always runs the risk of having a different definition of "common" than others. Since I am writing the article, you will just have to learn to live with this list. The bass is undoubtedly the most common freshwater fish targeted by anglers. There are plenty of variations, but basses tend to break down into two categories - largemouth and smallmouth. Both fish are considered excellent game fish, but the smallmouth is known for putting up a torrid fight. The bass were originally found in the Southeast of the country,
Most of the model designs are based on particular biotopes. A biotope is a small geographic area, such as a lagoon, with characteristic kinds of life. Saltwater organisms, though amazingly adaptable, thrive best in conditions similar to those found in their native biotope. The vastness and complexity of the coral reef ensures that many possible biotopes will exist wherever reefs occur. Coral reefs do not develop at random, however. The peculiar needs of the tiny animals that comprise the living coral restrict coral reefs to certain areas of the sea. Because of the narrow range of conditions required for abundant growth of coral, in some ways reefs everywhere share many similarities. This contrasts with freshwater habitats, which vary dramatically from place to place. Not only coral reefs, b

There is a large variety of freshwater tropical fish that you can add to your fish tank but my two favorites are Mollies and fancy guppies. These fish are livebearers meaning that instead of laying eggs, they give birth to a little tiny fish and they are, in fact, quite easy to breed even for a novice aquarist. Mollies A Molly is a great fish for a beginner hobbyist. These fish are fairly hearty and will withstand adversity and conditions well so if you make a mistake you can have a good chance of you for surviving. You want to be sure that you have a least a 15 gallon tank and you have a good heater as these fish like the temperature to be between 70 and 82°F. There are two general types of Mollies to choose from the Sail fin and the short finned. Most typically what you will find a shor
The Blue Gourami, sometimes also called the 3 Spot Gourami is a popular freshwater tropical fish for aquarium keeping. these fish are usually a light blue color and have three dark spots, one on the base of the tail, one in the middle of the body and the eye which looks like the third spot. The Gourami type of fish itself comes in several colors, the blue which you often see in pet stores, gold and opaline as well as a few other rear of varieties. These fish can grow very large and are best suited for larger aquariums. The Blue Gourami is a fairly easy fish to keep and will exist fine on floating flake food that you probably feed to the majority of the other fish in your tank. However, like most creatures, these fish do need a little bit of variety and it's good to throw in some freeze dri

The article doesn’t say it, but I think the vague threat of mass extinctions is increasing the number of species we know about as it spurs on research. It’s an odd contrast - it makes it look like biodiversity is increasing, but that has to happen before we can know for sure that it is decreasing.
Update: It seems the folks at the Extinction Blog were having similar thoughts.

Question about Dropsy: I posted about a female Siamese fighting fish (Betta) that appeared to have dropsy a few weeks ago. I treated her twice with Maracyn. After the swelling didn't start to go down, but she is still as swollen as she was then, but has not got to the point were her scales have started to protrude? Do you know what else that it could be. She seems buoyant and the swollen cavity appears to be filled by either air, of a clear liquid, when she swims in front of the lights? Answer:Have you tried Kanacyn? Maracyn (Erythromycin) is usually not effective for most causes of Dropsy. And dropsy is generally a symptom of something else, sometimes digestive, often kidney related. Because of this, Dropsy can often be very difficult to treat, especially if caught in an advanced case in the fish. What the aquarist often observes is a "pinecone" swelling generally caused by fluid building inside the body cavity, for this reason, reducing this swelling is an important step in effectin
You have probably been to your local pet shop or aquarist dealer and seen a large variety of tropical fish to choose from. How do you go about choosing the right combination of fish for you? You can't just choose any fish you like and expect them to all get along well together, it doesn't work like that - you need a plan. Firstly, do you want a community aquarium or a species tank? A community aquarium will hold a variety of different fish that will all live in harmony with each other. A species tank, as the name suggests, will only hold one variety of fish. Most people start with a community aquarium, and it is a very good place to start. Before you work out exactly which fish you want, you need to work out have many inches (or centimetres) of fish you can accommodate in your new aquarium. A long, shallow tank will hold more fish than a short deep tank, because it is the amount of oxygen in the water that is more important than the actual quantity of water. As a guide you can expec

Fish can be divided into two broad categories on the basis of their breeding behavior. Egg-layers, which form the majority, practice external fertilization, while in live bearers the eggs are fertilized in the female’s body and emerge fully formed young. Some species show little regard for their offspring and cannibalize their own eggs or fry. Others display surprisingly high levels of parental care.
When fish mate, it is known as spawning. In egg-layers, this involves the male releasing sperm into the water at roughly the same time that the female expels her eggs nearby, so that fertilization occurs outside the females body. This is a rather haphazard method of reproduction, and not surprisingly, a significant proportion of the eggs fail to become fertilized. In order to maximize the chances of fertilization occurring, some egg-layers attempt to maneuver their genital openings as close to each other as possible before spawning occurs, and there is occasionally contact between th

MsDannielle.com sent me a nice email about our site here and she mentioned she has a 30 gallon fish tank also (did you join our forum yet?). So it reminded me about my own 29 gallon (yes..1 gallon smaller) and so i went and found some old pictures of my 29 gallon planted freshwater tank.
This was really my first “real” tank that i set up. At that time, I was really mesmorized by Takashi Amano Planted Tanks and I actually went out and bought all his books. Heck, I even went to Japan and took a bus to his store and then lugged back like 20lbs of rock back to the US!
So anyways, here are some pictures I was able to find. Enjoy!
This was the first layout I did after coming back from Japan. Notice the authentic Amano Co2 parts on the left side of the tank (the bubble counter and the diffuser inside the tank - i could watch the bubbles go through that tube all day long). I started out with some val’s as freshwater plants in the background but they grew way too fast and
When I turned 18, my grandmother gave me a beautiful, expensive strand of cultured pearls. I thanked her profusely, but later whispered to my mom, “What am I going to do with these?” I was still young, still prided myself on being funky and weird, and still wore pajamas to early-morning classes. Pearls, to me, felt old. My mother swore that one day I would appreciate them - she felt the same way when she got her first strand of pearls, but now loves them.
Mom was right. A few years later, I really grew into the pearls. While my everyday style was still young, my evening wear was becoming classier. The pearls became the perfect accent to almost any outfit, and I became a pearl connoisseur. I ended up with a jewelry box full of different pearl necklaces.
I was excited to discover Funky Oysters, a new online store that only opened a few weeks ago. Funky Oysters promises a wide variety of real, freshwater pearl jewelry at affordable prices. The designs range from cla
While you often hear hobbyists saying they can’t get rid of all the snails in their tank, having snails in your freshwater aquarium as a rule is actually quite beneficial. Most snails act as a “clean up crew” in the aquarium, eating excess food, decaying plant or fish matter, and moving gravel on the tank bottom. The problem with snails in an aquarium is that they reproduce very quickly, and can marr your beautiful tank by being stuck all over the glass and decorations. The real challenge is keeping the snail population in check.
Snails are most often introduced into an aquarium through plants, gravel, or decorations that have moved from other tanks that have snails. While the snails themselves may be small, their eggs are even smaller! Unless you are willing to thoroughly clean everything before it goes into your aquarium, snails will eventually be introduced to your tank.

So I have always wanted a saltwater aquarium. I have had several freshwater aquariums in the past but they were always a lot of work, they smelled funny and the fish aren't near as colorful and fun to look at as the saltwater tanks that I had always seen on tv.
So a couple of years ago I went out and bought a saltwater tank, not just any saltwater tank but a beautiful 55 gallon hexagon plexiglass tank. It was beautiful to look at it. After picking out my tank I then went and picked out a couple of fish and thought I was good to go. Boy, was I wrong. I bumped into someone in the fish department at the pet store and my nightmare began.
First, I couldn't just buy a tank I had to get the $300 stand to set it on, I had to have certain types of sand and chemicals and pumps and filtration and wave simulators and lighting and, and, and, the list never stops. Oh, by the way forget the fish, it takes three months to get your tank ready before you should even think about fish.

I was disturbed to read today that the frogs from the Tasek Chini were no longer singing. They have practically disappeared. This may not seemed strange to you, in fact, you may not have any idea where Tasek Chini is . After all, it "was" a beautiful large mass of freshwater lake in the tropical forests of Malaysia. It "was" because it now no longer is beautiful as it was, with pollution levels reportedly 56 times higher than is considered healthy, and worse, this is right inside the tropical jungle. The frogs are not the only ones disappearing. The fishes, cobras, pythons are also diminishing in numbers. Weeds called the "Cat's Tail" have proliferated, snuffing out important sunlight that would allow organisms to grow. This is worrying enough for some concrete action to be taken to revive the ecosystem. In retrospect, how can action be taken to protect the environment, or a delicate ecosystem such as Tasek Chini, or any other lake in the world? Here at Tasek Chini I read about t
