A landslide injured 13 workers at U.S. firm Freeport's gold and copper mine in Indonesia's Papua province on Saturday, the company said. The landslide outside the Grasberg mine did not affect company operations, Mindo Pangaribuan, a Freeport Indonesia spokesman, said. "It's a natural incident. The Indonesian government is seeking higher royalties from production at US mining giant Freeport McMoRan's Grasberg mine in the easternmost province of Papua."On the matter of royalties from gold, we are asking that they be raised to 3.5 percent," said Witoro Soelarno, the head of mine inspection at Indonesia's energy ministry. The current royalty level for gold mined by Freeport's local unit according to a 1991 contract stands at 1 percent. Freeport Indonesia is the country's largest taxpayer.Soelarno said the company should pay a higher royalty to the Indonesian government as the purity level of gold mined in the past few years had improved to one gram per every one tonne of ore.Critics accuse Freeport of not giving enough to the people of Papua in return for the mine. And the updated entry… Rain or shine, we pursued our plan to visit Subic Bay Freeport Zone last Saturday. Comfortably sitting in our new vehicle, we left at around half-past five in the morning. It was already drizzling when we passed through NLEX toll gate. We enjoyed the morning sceneries along the way up to Dinalupihan in Bataan to have our Jolibee breakfast. Talagang breakfast! It was nice to be in Subic again, but this time, somebody’s going to treat us there and the most interesting part, we don’t know who are these people. Finally, before nine, Dunia, wife of Councilor John Carlos Delos Reyes of Olongapo met us inside the Subic area and brought us at their Brill’s residence. We were all thankful of their hospitality and generosity as we never expected something like this during our planning. They have a nice place for us, nice rooms and it was really for us, visitors. Thousands of workers at Freeport-McMoRan's Grasberg mine in Indonesia have ended a four-day walkout over welfare that had sent copper prices to seven-month highs, the head of a workers' group said on Saturday.The mine on the island of Papua produces more than 500,000 metric tons of copper annually and is Indonesia's biggest source of tax revenue.Frans Pigome, chairman of Tongoi Papua, a group representing native Papuan workers, said they would go back to work on Sunday.Freeport had agreed to increase the standard monthly salary to 3.1 million rupiah ($341) from 1.5 million rupiah, he said. Workers had initially asked for 3.6 million a month.

The government delayed the announcement of the Company’s Performance and Environmental Management Rating Evaluation Program, 2006 from the beginning of this year to the end of June. Sonny Keraf, Deputy Chairperson of the House Commission for the Environment from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) assumed that this was done deliberately to give Freeport a chance to improve its environmental management before the audit result is announced.“My suspicion is Freeport is given an opportunity so that the audit result announcement does not have a negative impact,” said Sonny when contacted by Tempo yesterday (26/2). If the allegation is true, he said, it will be difficult for the government or Freeport to change the audit result. This is because during the previous working meeting, Freeport was already categorized as deficient.

US mining firm Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc said its local subsidiary paid the government here a total of 1.6 bln usd last year, most of it in the form of taxes. 'From January to December 2006, Freeport Indonesia paid its financial obligations to the government of Indonesia in the sum of 1.6 bln,' the firm said in a statement. It said 1.29 bln of the total comprised corporate, employee income and other taxes. Dividends accounted for 159 mln usd and royalties 146 mln usd
