I discussed the freedom of the press before on this blog. There’s a post on the importance of the press for a democracy, there’s one on the importance for the struggle against poverty, and finally one on the importance for a well-functioning economy.
The current post contains some factual information on press freedom in the world. [...]
As enthusiastic as I am about the internet these days, I cannot help but be concerned about the future of the web. Confused? Well, sad to say that not all is well.Believe it or not, there are those who would like to nip Web 2.0 in the bud before it bears real fruit. The companies that have made billions of dollars over the last fifty years want their piece of the pie. No, that's not true - they want the whole damn thing.Fortunately, there are folks like those who run Free Press. If you have not heard of this fine organization, here is but a taste of their latest email newsletter.According to a story over at Fortune, despite its overtures at bidding on the coveted 700 mhz wireless spectrum next month, Google may not really be in it to win it - only to say that they tried. Ever heard of bit torrent? If you get your internet through ComCast you probably have. According to an article from Polyvibe (via Free Press), the number 2 internet provider in the U.S. is the target of a class ac

City hall calls for a $3.7-million, five-year strategy on substance abuse.
Pain specialists suggest more training for family doctors.
Pharmacists ask for tools to track patients.
Addiction experts ask all of us to stop blaming the addicts.
There seem to be dozens of possible solutions to halting widespread and growing abuse of oxycodone-based painkiller drugs in London.
The price in London alone could be in the millions of dollars. The payoff, though, could be in the return to ordinary lives for hundreds of addicts.
“When I was wrecked on this stuff,” says John, a 35-year-old former construction worker, “I just wanted to be able to spend a night at home and watch TV and be content with that. You just can’t do that on this stuff.”
Here are some suggested solutions made to The Free Press during research for this five-part series that ends today.

Paradime has features in both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News this week.
Kelley L. Carter gets Dime to talk about the depth offered in Spill at Will.
Therapeutic sessions: On several songs, it sounds like Paradime was lying on the couch. “I usually don’t listen to my own stuff after it’s done. Once an album is done, I’m so sick of it, I usually leave it alone. But I’ve been listening to this album a lot and it’s like ‘Oh, God.’ There’s only a couple of songs where it gets that deep. But those couple of songs are really … deep. And people are like ‘Are you OK?’ But if I don’t do that I’m cheating myself and I’m cheating the people that do like my music. We’ll see how people accept it or take it.”
Adam Graham’s piece in the Detroit News talks about the release of a full lp rather than an ep like planned.
“Spill at Will,” Paradime’s fourth album, was ori
There is an aspect of media relations that we don’t like to talk about in PR. At least not in front of our clients. It’s the advertising factor. Despite the fact that experts estimate over 70% of media comes out of a media/pr relationship, that symbiotic love-fest goes right out the window when faced power of the mighty advertising dollar. Most Fashion PR’s have experienced sending out a pitch to a publication only to get an advertising kit back, or a reponse that they would be happy to run something editorial in exchange for advertising. I had a story pulled last minute because my client was in direct competition of a favored advertiser. While this hasn’t been the norm for me, it has happened. Most often, I encounter the advertising factor when pitching independent or emerging publications who depend on advertisers to stay afloat.
The threat of advertising influencing editorial content is a real downer for PR - and to our ideas of Free Press. PR touts the abili
Earlier this month, I was interviewed by a few fantastic reporters who were interested in putting together a story on HIF and the freebie world in general for their respective newspapers!
The first article to come out was written for the FSView, the college newspaper for Florida State University. We conducted a phone interview for the story and I was pretty nervous. It was the first time I’d ever been in the interviewees shoes instead of the interviewer’s, but I think the article came out pretty darn well.
The next article was written for the Ka Leo O Hawai’i newspaper, which represents the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Their website is down at the moment, but the reporter, Kathleen, was nice enough to promise to send me a few copies of the newspaper itself! So as soon as I get them, I’ll scan the article and upload it here to HIF!
The rest of the interviews I’ve given recently have yet to produce any articles, but I’m told that a few will be runn
Operation Mockingbird:"Later that year Wisner established Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic American media. Wisner recruited Philip Graham (Washington Post) to run the project within the industry. Graham himself recruited others who had worked for military intelligence during the war. This included James Truitt, Russell Wiggins, Phil Geyelin, John Hayes and Alan Barth. Others like Stewart Alsop, Joseph Alsop and James Reston, were recruited from within the Georgetown Set. According to Deborah Davis (Katharine the Great): "By the early 1950s, Wisner 'owned' respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communications vehicles."
