The story is about Juan Mann (and now many others all over the world) who in a moment of uncertainty created a cardboard sign that said “Free Hugs.” He went out on the street and held up the sign and although many people looked at him with fear, many others took him up on the offer. Now, after being banned and shunned, he’s made it perfectly acceptable to ask for hugs and is also well-known. He’s been on Oprah and has a kick-ass Web site, www.freehugscampaign.org

Remember the "FREE HUGS" campaign from a few years ago. The YouTube video began a huge hit all over the world. We were walking in the Gangnum area of Seoul when we saw this Korean holding the "FREE HUGS" sign just like in the video. No one was hugging him. We saw Koreans taking pictures but no one approached him. I said to my Korean friends and my husband, "I really want to give him a hug." My husband said, "Go ahead" but my Korean friends said no, Koreans don't really hug especially not strangers.I didn't listen to them and hugged him anyway. Curt (hubby) took this picture. My two Korean girlfriends are in the foreground of the picture. You can see one is quite surprised I did it. It felt good!

The ability for online video and social networking to bring out the best, and worst, of humanity may be why it’s so fascinating.
For all the violations of privacy and humiliations inflicted upon hapless victims, there are the stories and snippets of inspiration that sneak their way into our media player.
One of my favorites is the Free Hug Campaign, which hit the public consciousness with this video from the end of last year.
It’s not only a truly inspirational video that will get you thinking and smiling for the rest of the day. It’s a masterful use of video editing: black and white changing into color, little stories captured in their bare essence, and obstacles met, struggled with, and overcome.

I have to say the Free Hugs Campaign in Korea is alive and kicking.Anyways, check out the following video of a Free Hugs Korea campaign gone bad. From my knowledge, they are supposed to actually hug you right? Well, while we were in Myeongdong last weekend we spotted some girls holding their signs proudly. So I decided to have some fun and put their Free Hugs gig to the test--by hugging both of them at the same time. Too bad they did not reciprocate, as they seemed a bit embarrassed by the whole situation (probably because there was a camera in their face...hehe). In a society that shuns human contact, preferring our own company or the company of a select few, a display of affection and caring for other people of the magnitude seen in this video is not only uncommon, but the initiator is often shunned by those around him for being “weird”, “creepy”, and many other labels shoved onto people who don’t fit into what we’re told is “the norm”. Sadly though, these labels don’t require that you do anything near what is seen here. All you need to do is care about others, express it openly, and be unlike other people, whether for good or for bad. Being different is optional.
